“James [Gunn] always pushed for practical and makeup effects,” said Guardians of the Galaxy special effects makeup designer, Dave White, of character designs in the Marvel film. “He wanted, like me, to see the real deal there on set.” White, who previously sculpted the look of Red Skull in Captain America and later designed creatures in Thor: The Dark World, worked with Gunn to create the looks for Gamora, Drax, Nebula, Yondu, Korath, and several aliens in Guardians of the Galaxy. “I’ve been fortunate to have been around the Marvel world for a little while,” he enthused to Co.Create. “I like to think my own artwork and style has worked well within the universe. James had very specific ideas and I would give an interpretation of what I thought would work. Ultimately, it’s down to what the director wants to see: He needs to go through that process of testing ideas to see how they read in the world he wants to create.” He continued, “There is a retro hint in the [Guardians] designs. I was very careful not to use modern creature design influences that could have fallen short in the unique world Gunn had envisioned.” Take a scroll down and get a look at some of the practical designs. Many thanks to GuardtheGalaxy!

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014

The practical FX on this was so damn great. And this was by the same person who did Red Skull in Cap1? So why did Red Skull looks so absolute shit? Red Skulls.. red skull.. brought the whole movie down a few pegs.

.......I was a little offended by the racist comments they made about the A'askvarii race. Implying that they were not sexually desirable. Come on guys. It's 2014.

I love the use of practical effects in science fiction films, especially this one. White did an amazing job. Loved the movie.

This film had some of the laziest designs... I mean, though a nitpick, it did bother me throughout.

Gamora's design is still bland. Especially when you look at the effort put into these amazing designs.

There were two CGI aliens really. There was one four-legged thing wandering around in the Kyln and there was the big blue dude who got nostrilled by Groot.

kevberg- although i agree Yondu was nothing at all like the comics which was a bit disappointing, i personally loved rooker's performance. also keep in mind the role was written for rooker, before yondu wasent even in the film but gunn wrote him a part after seeing rookers audition (i think he auditioned for star lord)

Love the movie. But I have to agree with @Maven. Why would Yondu have a southern accent?

Too many humanoid aliens. And Yondu has to become less of a hillbilly and more heroic in the sequel.

The movie was designed to feel like an 80's film in more ways than one. So it makes sense that the alien designs would reflect films of that era and of course Trek.

All of Marvel's films since Iron Man have had a late 70's and early 80's feel. It's interesting that the economic dump of 2008 harkens back to the energy or gas crisis back then.

Marvel has made some great entertaining films and has really brought back that era I remember with comics, 7-11 plastic Marvel cups, Marvel school book covers and Marvel stickers. I think Hulk had one that said "Green Power".

Awesomesauce.
