Almost two months after its August summer debut, Guardians of the Galaxy is still racking up big dollars at the box office. According to the Gitesh Pandya among others, the James Gunn-directed Marvel venture has domestically grossed an estimated total of $319.2, as of Sunday. Which means Guardians is now the 33rd highest-grossing movie of all-time in the United States, and third highest at Marvel Studios. That's right, it has finally surpassed Iron Man, as well as the first Transformers and Harry Potter movies. That is quite a milestone, and it won't end there. Globally, the space epic has earned $644.3 which nears Thor: The Dark World's $644.8. What do you think?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014

This is terrific news. It's important because GOTG didn't have the best opening, although it was a good opening. What's important is that it really had "legs", meaning people really thought it was a quality movie. It's still in the top ten even after nearly two months at the BO. That's saying something.

Once it hits China it will likely be the highest grossing CBM of the year which is crazy because it was suppose to be the lowest by the admission of most experts and wannabes.

What a surprise, the last 3 weekends there has been at least 2 new big realeases each, but Guardians still has low drops, I thought the people would stop seeing the movie now that there's something else to see.
Well, I guess people would see GotG even if there's something else because that what they wanted to see.

@JohnCarter

I agree but I'm saying is there really a difference between $630 and $660 that maters?

It's good if other studios might be encouraged by this but we might get some crappy Guardians rip offs. Star Wars ripoffs were the worst back in the day.

@Rulk

I liked the movie, why are you trying to paint me as a DC fanboy?

Everyone else's reaction when this movie was a success...

My reaction when it was a sucess...

Eveyone's reaction to my reaction not being as extreme...

@MyInnerDork I said it "edges" Thor 2, not surpass.

@Lizardking310 @Dingbat I've simply only stated the facts in my article(s). Marvel's riskiest movie passing its first movie as independent studio is a big deal, IMO. I'm sure the flame wars actually start in the comments.

By Tuesday, Guardians should pass Thor 2 WW. And, by next weekend, Guardians should reach exactly $650M WW. By the end of its domestic run, Guardians should hit $330M.

If there's already someone tired of people worshiping Guardians how many people must be tired of Nolan's Batman

Star Wars ripoffs weren't all bad. This one is 100x better than Star Wars...
