A month prior to last night's highly unexpected news that Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) will be returning in Captain America 3 to launch the massive Civil War storyline, directors Joe and Anthony Russo took part in an overlooked Hypable interview where they were asked about potential storylines and subtitles; ones that are now seemingly coming to fruition for the 2016 threequel.
Right as the interview began, the interviewer had randomly coughed out "Civil War," which brought nothing but stares and silence from the Russos. “Had you said Fallen Son…” laughed Joe Russo, referring to the storyline that follows the Civil War events. “It’s Fallen Son and we kill him on page 20; It’s crazy, but we’re doing that,” Joe continued. Anthony Russo then added, “Actually he’s dead before the movie starts.”Sure, they may have been joking about Cap's death, but with recent reports that both Civil War and Fallen Son are being tossed around for the official Captain America 3 subtitle, the Russos may have just wanted us to think they were joking. Or just maybe the actual title will be something else entirely. Further during the interview, the duo had vaguely teased what the film would be about (which we now have a better understanding of). “We’ve used this formula throughout our careers, taking very incongruous elements and smashing them into each other,” said Joe Russo. “We’re not gonna get away from some of that tone [from Winter Soldier], we like a very grounded approach to the character. We like long lenses. We like handheld camera work. That stuff’s not going away. But what can we bring that’s fresh to the table from an execution standpoint, from a relationship standpoint, and from a storytelling standpoint? You don’t want them to say, ‘I saw this movie two years ago and it was called The Winter Soldier.'” Surely, that won't be the case. Anyhow, something else the Russos have said previously about Captain America 3 is that Steve Rogers' main mission is to find his old friend Bucky/Winter Soldier, which has caused some to speculate that the brainwashed character will somehow take the place of Spider-Man in the loose Civil War adaptation. After all, Winter Soldier did murder Tony Stark's parents, who were believed to be in a car crash. What do you think?
Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan, with Emily VanCamp and Frank Grillo among others expected to reprise their Captain America: The Winter Soldier roles, the tentatively-titled Captain America 3 is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2016.
