Just a couple weeks ago, two additional contenders reportedly met with Warner Bros. to potentially direct the long-awaited Wonder Woman movie, but now The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the initial frontrunner, Michelle MacLaren, has signed the dotted line. According to the trade's sources, she has been "on-and-off" with the studio since August, but was always considered the top pick thanks to her directing credits on certain episodes of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.
In addition to directing the DC Comics adaptation, MacLaren will also be working closely with unknown screenwriters to develop the script for the Amazon Princess. And Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder are on board as producers. THR also reckons that there was some pressure within Warner Bros. to hire a female director for the project, despite very few females having successfully tackled a project of this scale. Fortunately, things seemed to have worked out with Michelle MacLaren, who has become a fan-favorite ever since she was revealed to be in contention. Anyhow, Gal Gadot is set the star as Princess Diana in Batman v Superman on March 25, 2016, and will then headline Wonder Woman on June 23, 2017.
