Hot on the heels of The Fantastic Four's long-awaited teaser trailer debut, director Josh Trank and producer Simon Kinberg have offered video commentary in a featurette via Yahoo Movies, where they discuss key frames among other things. In addition, the two filmmakers also talked with Empire about visual effects, rumors of the superheroes' codenames not being used, and the reason for the delayed release date. Watch the video below, then check out additional info further down.

“We live in a time where there’s a required instant gratification from audiences,” Josh Trank told Empire of The Fantastic Four trailer teasing the tone, but holding back plot details. “That’s a fun challenge in terms of putting together this teaser, picking and choosing how much you’re actually giving away.” Simon Kinberg adds that “What we’re doing is quite different, and we want people to get a sense of it. There is a mystery, and the slow immersion into that is part of the experience of what will ultimately be the movie. We wanted it to feel different and represent what’s unique about the film. It has a little more restraint, maybe, than some other trailers these days.” About rumors that Marvel's First Family won't be identified as their comic book codename, both Trank and Kinberg remained tight-lipped. “We want some of that to be a surprise,” said the producer. “It is in many ways an origin story, but it’s also about how they react to this transformation, and the ways the world does or doesn’t react to them, which is different, I would say, than all other superhero films.” It was previously revealed that the reboot draws a lot of inspiration from the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics, but Kinbeg confirms “our characters go to another dimension.” He continued, “It was something we discussed from our earliest conversations.” Trank chimes in, “You can’t have the word ‘fantasy’ or ‘fantastical’ without a contrast. It has to stem from a grounded experience. You can’t have bad without good, you can’t have right without wrong, you can’t have fantastic without mundane. You need to experience all that to really earn the title of the film, ‘Fantastic Four’.” About the film's initial release date getting pushed back a few months, the duo reveal the reason for it was solely Trank's desire for secrecy, as well as the visual effects. “We wanted the visual effects to be as complete as possible,” says Kinberg. “We know this movie is going to have a little more scrutiny than most, and we wanted to make sure the visuals represented what Josh really pictured for the film. Creating a fully CGI Thing is no easy task!”

Directed by Josh Trank, The Fantastic Four stars Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell with Reg E. Cathey, and the film is scheduled for release on August 7, 2015.

After seeing this commentary and reading the Collider interview, my confidence in the movie is improving...seems like they're really trying to change things up some, but be true to the comic history, etc at the same time...

This dude (Trank) sounds so [frick]ing uninterested in the film he's talking about that HE DIRECTED.

His comments about the CGI are probably a BIG reason why they didn't show off much. The only stuff we saw were whatever scenes they'd already completed, for the most part. After much complaining about the Jurassic World or Ant-Man or Age of Ultron teasers with so much unfinished CGI, I kind of like this approach.

Still, that's why we need to see another trailer or two before getting a true handle on how this might turn out. I'm still right on the fence with this one.

Looking forward to this. Loved the look of the main four - all terrific actors. Some of the CGI was sketchy, but hopefully that'll all change come August.

Also, I really hope this trailer ruined Netman's day.

It looks intetestimg. It has to pique interest and it's only a teaser. I think k whats trying to be showcased is that the Fantastic Four are explorers first and superheroes second. It's akin to star trek in a way. They're about discovery and science and the unknown. This trailer evokes such. Haters getting too Hype only a teaser

Trank knows the material and what he's doing. This will probably be my favorite comic book movie this year

Like a majority of others I'm still not on board. It just looks like a generic Sci Fi film. The trailer was decent but after Trancendance I don't think I'll be giving FF the benefit of the doubt.

Creating a fully CGI Thing should be the easiest task in terms of CGI characters. Rocket Raccoon was more of a challenge. Hulk and Gollem were far more challenging. Rock is [frick]ing easy for a computer to fake.

In any event, the trailer looks fine but highly generic. It doesn't really answer any questions about how the film will actually be, as it gives us no character interaction and no real plot details. It also seems very isolated and enclosed... The whole thing was shot indoors and it looks it (minus generic stock footage of planes flying or cars driving through farmland.)

Could still be a solid film, and they definitely made it feel very different from the last take on the FF, which I'm sure was an important goal. Beyond that, though... there's just so very little here. I don't know that this is the way to get people excited to see the reboot of a series that just got a passing interest from audiences the first time around.

I think it would be generic if it looked like more of the same stand popcorn action flick. This looks like a sci-fi movie with actual sci-fi

Sure looks like one to me. If not they sure copied the characters and The Thing awfully looks like "The Thing"

The direction seems great, I just don't think they should had used the fantastic 4 franchise to adapt it

I feel this film will flop because the mainstream audience seem completely uninterested. People have been tearing it apart on Facebook due to the trailer being boring and them still bringing up the last 2 FF movies.
FordEl
FordEl - 1/27/2015, 9:46 AM
@Dinotron

Its not fantaatic four because there arent 5000 jokes. Just bc there arent that many jokes doesnt mean its a dark movie. Fantastic Four makes sense to be a more sci fi movie. And understandably they want to distance themselves from the first 2 movies which were jokes themselves.

I actually quite enjoyed that commentary. It's so good to finally see Josh Trank himself going in depth about why he changed what he changed, and how he tried to stay true to the spirit of the comics. Maybe this movie really is in good hands after all?

@AstonishingArachnid

Ive seen very positive feelings from the casuals. If it were emulating the same exact feel as the first two that wouldve been a mistake bc ppl remember how bad that was. This trailer just says theyre taking it nore seriously and putting it in a more sci fi horror direction--which makes a lot of sense

@FordEl I compared it to Transcendence as it seems to be a new breed of generic Sci fi movies about technological advancements and have this very 'gritty' tone with the voice over about how the world is going to change. Lucy can also be put in that category and all those movies have been lacklustre.
