Jon Watts On Landing SPIDER-MAN As Director, "Perfect" Tom Holland And His CIVIL WAR Debut

For the first time since he was announced as director of the Spider-Man reboot, Jon Watts has discussed how he got the gig, why Tom Holland is perfect, and he also comments on the Web-Slinger's debut!

In the same announcement that had named Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker/ Spider-Man of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jon Watts was also revealed as the director of the Web-Slinger's next standalone movie. And while promoting his new film Cop Car which debuted at Sundance, Watts explained to Entertainment Weekly how he landed the project with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures and why Holland is perfect for the role. The filmmaker also vaguely weighed in on (and further confirmed) the rebooted Spider-Man making his debut in Captain America: Civil War

"I’m not really sure what happened," said Jon Watts when asked how he went from directing his Sundance hit Cop Car to Spider-Man. "I had never been to Sundance before. I was nervous because that was the first time we were showing the movie to an actual crowd. So I was dealing with that. I mean, Sundance is like a genre. At least it was to me growing up and in film school: it’s like a Sundance kind of a movie. But [Marvel] got to see Cop Car and they really liked it. But yeah, this trend is interesting. Now, I’ve got to make a slightly more expensive version. It’s an opportunity to just have a bigger canvas instead of just scrapping together any story you can."

When asked about the possibility that directing Spider-Man would delay other passion projects, Jon Watts said, "I think that’s a little philosophical. I mean, I still have so many movies that I want to make, and [Spider-Man] just gets to become one of them. That’s how I think of it. I still have a lot of ideas I want to make, in addition to this, and I don’t think it’s a one-way path in that sense." Talk then turned to Tom Holland with Watts offering nothing but praise for the British as well as his performance in The Impossible. "He’s so good in that," he said. "He can be a real high school student. That’s why people love Spider-Man. He’s the most grounded, relatable of superheroes. And Tom can really do that. He captures that. And he can do a standing back-flip. He’s perfect."

Finally, Jon Watts was asked about collaborating with Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo given Tom Holland will first appear in that movie before swinging solo. "I mean, it’s a big universe, so everyone sort of works with each other to make sure that there’s continuity and that it all fits together," he explained. "It’s really exciting actually. We’re just getting started, working on the script and all that, but it’s going to be a great process." What do you think?

Directed by Jon Watts, Marvel and Sony's untitled Spider-Man reboot so far stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and is scheduled to open in theaters on July 28, 2017. However, the friendly neighborhood web-slinger will first make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016.

Can't Wait, and I think Watts is an awesome choice

"Now, I’ve got to make a slightly more expensive version." Are you talking about Spider-Man? Is Spider-Man going to have a low budget? That's interesting.

@Mrcool210 I think in context, he's being slightly sarcastic/understated. He's talking about going from Cop Car, which by all accounts is pretty much an indie (or at the very least a low-budget flick), to a superhero action/comedy blockbuster by Marvel Studios. His next comment about "It’s an opportunity to just have a much bigger canvas instead of just scrapping together any story you can" makes me think Spider-Man will have as big a budget as any other MCU solo film.

Still don't know what I think about the writers, but I'm pretty confident in Jon Watts and Tom Holland.

"says Watts, who once watched the Sam Raimi Spidey production lighting up the Brooklyn Bridge from his dorm room."
Thats amazing to me!

@SauronsBANE i kind of figured that, but i was more so saying it would be interesting to see a low budget spidey film, sort of what the first TASM was trying to do, more practical swinging maybe keeping the villain more in the shadows, and making the suit look more homemade then it ever has before. Just saying i think it would be a nice change of pace.

A more low key, to the streets spider-man film, kind of like daredevil on netflix, except more lighthearted.

Tom Brady's 4 game suspension upheld.

@Mrcool210 When you describe it like that, that actually sounds pretty neat! In theory at least, that seems like the perfect approach...and it even fits in with what they've said they want to do with Spidey, now that he's in the MCU.

It'd be the exact opposite of how big-budgeted and CGI-heavy TASM 2 was, so that's a plus too.

Le'Veon Bell's suspension reduced from 3 games to 2.

@SauronsBANE I can agree with you on that. And that's coming from someone aside from Jollem who liked Tasm 2. We've gotten all of our big budget Spidey films, something smaller could work for his first movie in this new universe, especially since he's apparently been spidey for a while and none of his events have been mentioned in the MCU so they couldn't have had that big of an impact, i mean sure, part of me wants Mysterio for this first movie and that will require a huge budget to get the full potential with that character, but i'll still be happy if we stick with a smaller less expensive villain for the first movie, just so we don't get the huge spidey movies for a little bit, he's not superman or the hulk, spideys even do matter, but not much in the grand scheme of things.

My preferences were Jonathan Levine and Charlie Rowe, but I still have faith in this. It can't be any worse than what Marc Webb gave us....right? Right?!?!?!?!?

I just hope they let him do this thing, and the input from studio execs from Fox AND Marvel don't do more harm than good.
He seems like a good director, let him breath.

You mean Sony.

I wonder how a Spidey film would be like with FOX behind it though, lol.

Ehhh.....I'd say 99.5% of just comic book fans in general are just wanting to see a better Spider-Man, MCU or not. It's just conveniently, we're getting Spidey in the MCU now.
