Oscar Isaac Says Portraying X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Villain Is "Basically Playing God"

Hit the jump and check out the latest from Oscar Isaac as he discusses his "fun" experience shooting X-Men: Apocalypse and pushing his performance as En Sabah Nur, aka Apocalypse, to new "Godly" heights. He also talks a bit about his role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

20th Century Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse is among the many 2016 comic book movies that have recently wrapped principal photography. So, when The Playlist and Paste Magazine caught up with Oscar Isaac in anticipation of his new HBO series Show Me a Hero, the sites asked the Guatemalan actor about his titular supervillain role in the mutant ensemble. "You use different tools, different approaches," said Isaac, when The Playlist asked what he learned from portraying Apocalypse in the upcoming X-Men sequel. "...It was great because there’s an embodiment of such big ideas, you’re not working in the realm of naturalism. And just because something's natural doesn’t mean that it's interesting — and I think Kubrick knew that very well. Sometimes it’s fun to push performance into other places that is not just about the same kind of verité thing. You can go to heightened places in a Greek tragedy or kabuki kind of way. You have these forms that express more than just an individual’s personality. And that’s been really fun to play with in X-Men."

Furthermore, when Paste Magazine asked Oscar Isaac about joining the X-Men franchise, as well as the hotly-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. "For me, more than anything, it was about being guilty of nostalgia," he explained. "I was a big fan of Star Wars. I was also a big fan of X-Men, particularly the villain Apocalypse, so when those parts came around and there was interest for me to do them, I was excited about it. I was excited to explore those worlds. There is something more mythical … basically, you’re playing God. It’s a challenge." What do you think?

Directed by Bryan Singer, X-Men: Apocalypse stars Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), with Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), with Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert) and Oscar Isaac (Apocalypse). The movie opens on May 27, 2016.

This dude's career is going to explode. I actually have more faith in this movie now knowing Simon Kinberg isn't writing the screenplay. I know he wrote DOFP, which I think is a damn there brilliant movie, but very much Singer and more-so Vaughn's scriptment. Minus a film or two, his resume isn't too hot.

Bring it on, love everything he's said of the role.

Hopkins said the same thing about playing Odin.

I like Oscar. I think he's a great pick for Apocalypse. I loved the direction of Apocalypse having this sort of calm cool voice like he's got everything under control.

But I really really really [frick]ing hate this design. We have Thanos looking like Thanos in the MCU. We know Snyder would make Darkseid look like Darkseid. Was this really that [frick]ing hard Singer?

I mean if you don't want Oscar to be that big, that's ok but the design on the photo would have been a great design to go with.

Instead now my favorite X-Men villain is compared to those lame ass Power Rangers villains. [frick].

Just remember how much we all hated the look of Quicksilver before he became one of the best aspects of Days of Future Past, people.

@staypuffed yeah...but being the best retard in the land of retards isn't anything to write home about. That DoFP sucked balls, and their quicksilver was corny as hell. Unless you're a kid, and you like that cornball stuff. Then its all you, bro.

This movie won't be any closer to an X-Men film than any of the others have been, I'm sure. Such a waste

Every time I see that Apocalypse design -I get taken out of this movie. I'm glad to see the character in live-action but I'm really hoping there is more to his design than what we've seen so far. I know Oscar Isaac is going to kill the performance -I just wonder if I can look beyond how silly he may be looking while doing it. Because at the moment -I just can't get past how horrible he looks as Apocalypse in the few stills released.

Singer's filmmaking style is peculiar and so is his aesthetic. It's still not very hard to admire the design and canonical attributes; albeit, while they maintained something eerie, unique and believable in that futuristic/ancient sense, it's not striking or anything close to. Why are we giving that Power Rangers joke any credibility when the *leaked* Civil War footage was also met with the same criticism? Most fans are pseudo-critics having no idea how innovation works - using that same sense though, it's not hard to see why when we can't have a definite version or something close to brought to the screen. Especially in Fox's case. even if it is obnoxious, it's somewhat justifiable.

These Ivan Ooze comparisons are fun but I hope people realize that's just a shot on set and not his final look.

Not to mention the EW cover already showed the final version is blue and not purple, lighting is everything.
