Kevin Feige Talks CAPTAIN MARVEL Casting Process, And Teases Her Other 'Phase 3' Appearances

Are Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain, and Emily Blunt really in contention to lead Marvel Studios' first female-led superhero movie? Not exactly, but Kevin Feige says the studio listens to our suggestions for Captain Marvel even though they aren't close to filling the role.

The upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release of Avengers: Age of Ultron has garnered many updates on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe today, and the latest from president Kevin Feige is on Marvel Studios' first female-led movie, Captain Marvel. From Edge of Tomorrow's Emily Blunt to Mad Max: Fury Road's Charlize Theron, quite a few actresses have been rumored, or suggested for the role of Carol Danvers, but it seems none of them are actually in contention; at least not now.

"There won’t be any announcements about that this year," said Kevin Feige when MTV News asked about casting the lead in Captain Marvel. "I think right now we’re scripting the film, figuring out who we want Carol Danvers to be, and really what the structure of the movie will be and what her part will be in some of our other Phase 3 films. And it would be next year that we start to really think about casting." Feige mentioning that Danvers could have a role in other Phase 3 movies is seemingly a confirmation that the superheroine will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, specifically Part II given her cinematic debut will be released in between the two-part event.

Producer Jeremy Latchman echoed Feige, and offered praise for the direction Captain Marvel is heading so far. "We have really amazing writers on the movie," he said. "Meg [LeFauve] and Nicole [Perlman] are great, and I think getting the character right first is going to lead the charge. We want to make sure we know who it is before we can start figuring out who should play it."

About the many actresses that fans have suggested for Carol Danvers, the Marvel producers admitted they have seen the fan-casts. However, "we always have a clear sense of who we want to cast and who we’re interested in," said Latchman. "We have amazing casting directors — Sarah Finn, who’s been with us since Iron Man — but at the same time, when a fan list comes out…" Regardless of knowing who they might be interested in, Jeremy Latch said, "We read [the cast suggestions], we go through it, we read the comments, we look at who people like." He continued, "Sometimes it’s really enlightening. Sometimes it’s the exact same person that they’ve been saying over and over again that we don’t think is right. It’s always fun to kinda go through it and see what people are up to." Anyhow, Captain Marvel is set to hit theaters November 2, 2018.

Sorry but Marvel dropped on the ball on this one...... They really should have done a Black Widow movie or pushed this movie out a lot earlier.

Though I do understand the lack of faith on solo female characters based on Catwoman and Elektra.

I think this is the one cam I'm looking forward to about as much as Black Panther. Glad they're carefully planning this.

Well with all the hype Emily Blunt is getting to be Captain Marvel I guess that means they could be considering her since she's a fan favorite like Benedict was

You know I would really dig a all female superhero movie!!!!!!!! Marvel could pull that off with M Hill, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, and Captain Marvel.

I would see that in a heartbeat!

@Omarvls

No they should have done a Black Widow in Phase 1 or early Phase 2, that would have been a great opportunity to set a standard or a role model for little girls to look up.

That is why I am saying they dropped the ball...... it is too late IMO!

And no people I am not saying the movie will bomb or fail by any means.

LOL1 By your comment alone you also made a great point about seeing her for the sixth time........ they were fine with doing three IM movies and him being in two Avenger's movies......

Same with Cap and Thor......

To me Black Widow and Hawkeye should have at least been in one movie together.

For every Catwoman or Elektra, there's a Hunger Games, Alien, Kill Bill, Gravity, Lara Croft, Salt, Gravity, Resident Evil, or Lucy.

Not that those are all comic book movies or anything, but still. Saying that there should be a concern because of movies like Catwoman or Elektra is such a tired, played-out excuse that holds no water whatsoever. There's a HUGE market for female-led movies. It's way passed time to, well, get with the times.

@SauronsBane

I agree with your comment, but please note the movies you listed are not associated with comic books or they are not portrayed as costumed superheroes!

@JoeMomma29 I did note that, but why should that matter? Green Lantern and X-Men Origins: Wolverine were two recent male-led comic book movies that failed miserably, but that never forced studios to go "Hmm, maybe there should be some concern with male-led superhero movies!" Why should that be the same for the female-led ones?

So again no excuses especially with Mad Max Fury Road......C. Theron made that whole movie!!!!!!!!!!!

Alien and Aliens is a prime example of a female carrying a action flick!

Good lord I am freaking agreeing with you!!!!!! I am merely pointing out that Marvel does not have any excuse for not pushing a female hero movie sooner!!!!!!!!

Heck look at what Disney as done with their all female leads in their animated movies!!!!!!!!

I agree I would love to see BW as the lead and have a supporting cast like Hawkeye as well.

Black Widow just doesn't deserve a movie. Maybe a Netflix movie with Hawkeye but not a big worldwide release movie.
Giving BW a movie just to please a bunch of feminazis and some real feminists is the worst reason to give a female character a movie.
She's not interesting enough, hell, BW is still one of the most hated casts around here.
There's a lot of movies for women these days, saying Marvel or WB have the obligation to make a female lead movie as soon as posible is just dumb

@Bekss

Yes they do have an obligation........ little girls need someone to look up to!

Also it is obligation to the stock holders as well. As silly as that sounds it is true.

Little girls or young girls had someone to look up to in the 70's and early 80s and that was WW.

@MexicanSuperman We're having the same conversation in two different threads. WTF does "real" diversity even mean? This is the weirdest thing I've ever heard about this topic, and I've looked into this and researched this a LOT over the last few years.

They're making a Captain Marvel movie because they want to make it and they'll do it at the right moment FOR THEM and THEIR universe.
There has been rumors of CM just as long as rumors for Dr. S. and Black Panther which means they're not just shoving her into the universe just because. And that's the best part of CM movie, it will have a real meaning for the universe.

I mean I will hand it to Disney for what they have done with their female characters.

Hey they even made Alice a strong female in live action movie.

I know people on this site hate Zack Snyder but he as well has portrayed or put females in prominent roles. Granted Sucker Punch failed........ and I would like to think he pushed the WW movie forward.
