During an extensive interview in the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Rhys Ifans shared strong opinions about his role as Dr. Curt Connors in The Amazing Spider-Man, and how the 2012 reboot did not (or never would) meet his expectations. The Welsh actor also shared his viewpoint, or rather hopes, for the Webslinger's upcoming reboot over at Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
"Anthropologically, it was fascinating," said Rhys Ifans of The Amazing Spider-Man. "If I was an anthropologist, it would have been very valuable... As an actor, it was a lesson." The actor then said his was not into comics prior to landing the Lizard role, but he was a bit familiar with the supervillain. "As I got into it, I remember looking into The Lizard and there was one of the comics where Dr. Curt Connors goes home, and he's messing about with his Lizard-ness," he started. "He takes his work home with him, and he eats his kids." He continued, "I remember thinking at the time, 'That's the film I want to be in.' Not necessarily Dr. Curt Connors eating his kids, but in terms of exploration, in terms of what this film could be about, that was the film. And of course, it could never be that. Whatever you're told and promised at the beginning of something, when it comes to franchises like that, it's never ever going to be what ends up on screen."
About the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, Rhys Ifans says, "I have absolutely no opinion on it. No opinion." However, he adds, "I hope that when they reboot, there will be more emphasis on the 'boot' than the 're', because it needs a kick up the arse." Fair enough! What do you think?
Directed by Jon Watts, Marvel and Sony's untitled Spider-Man reboot so far stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and is scheduled to open in theaters on July 28, 2017. However, the friendly neighborhood web-slinger will first make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016.
