Spider-Man 2012 Budget to Be in the $80 Million Range

Spider-Man 2012 Budget to Be in the $80 Million Range

It was announced earlier today that Marc Webb, will be directing the reboot, while Jim Sturgess is rumored to helm the title role. Well now Hollywood Reporter is reporting more of Sony's plans for the film:

"The plan for the movie is to be in the $80 million range and feature a cast of relative unknowns (so you can quash those Rob Pattinson or Gordon-Levitt rumors at this point). And the story will be pared down to center on a high school kid who is dealing with the knowledge that his uncle died even though the teen had the power to stop it."

"The touchstone for the new movie will not be the 1960s comics, which were the inspiration behind the movies by Raimi, who grew on up on them, but rather this past decade's "Ultimate Spider-Man" comics by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley where the villain-fighting took a back seat to the high school angst."

"Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin are producing the new movie, which will begin production this year."

MarvelFreshman: Now that I think about it, in the first Spider-Man film, they did kinda rush the death of Peter's uncle. That aspect should be what makes SPidey want to be a hero. I think that was the main problem with the first Spider-Man. They rushed over the franchise to get to an older Spidey for the sequels. High school should be Peter Parkers's main place as a character. Now that I think about I would really like it more, if he would stay a teenager. I'm starting to like this reboot idea.

Do you guys remember the Venom movie that was in the works. I wonder what affect the reboot will have on that.

"where the villain-fighting took a back seat to the high school angst" - so it's basically The OC with webbing...

The Ultimate stuff had some really good writing, and I would not mind the direction. That is, so long as it turned into a good movie.

I really hope that they cast Brett Harrison as spidey. All this news on the spidey reboot hasn't really blown up my skirt.

Crap. Thats what I hated about the first trio...too much of a whiney Peter Parker! I like the director, but I'm not sure about this direction.

I think we should listen to Stan "The Man" Lee on who he would like to see and who he would like to see don the spidey suit. All I F***ing want is Tobey Maguire back...

i don't much care for the Ultimate universe mainly because they radically changed so Many aspects of a universe we have all come to love.
now a black Nick Fury is one thing.
a demonic wrestler looking Green Goblin and incestuous Maximoff twins are a whole nother matter.

i like the fact that the Ultimate line was more "real" which i don't mind but when they start to mess with the mythology of each character is what ruins it for me.
this is just my opinion and i respect those whose like the Ultimate U.

but i'm just a little iffy on how much Ultimate they'll put into the Spidey reboot.

@johnathan. I agree in a sense about the batman thing. However, BB came out 16 years after the first batman was made and like 8 (I think) years after the last batman. Every batman movie before BB was set in the future in this unknown realm of things. It worked and it served it's purpose. But BB was so successful because it took Batman out of this unknown realm and made him a present day character, modernized his weapons, and showed his motives for becoming Batman in a realistic sense. BB did not try and cover the same ground. Now compare that to SPM. S3 came in 07 and the first was made in what 02? So this reboot will take place 5 years after it's previous franchise and will cover the exact same ground as before???? WTF?!? And 80 million?!? The special effects will be worse then the GG power ranger suit in S1. Just food for thought

(yes I posted this on another article but thought it was relevant here)

Umh for sure wnot have origin again, and it's not that bad. I hope they think that a film set in high school doesn't means to cast even the villains of the same age. I just hated that 20something years old venom. Talking of venom, yes freshman@,probably we wont have any of the villains we already seen. Venom we'll be introduced very soon

$80mil was the budget for Sherlock Holmes. Could suffice, choosing unknown as they are saying. I realistically expect a few fight scenes,in favour of greater introspection and introduction of the other character(hope both Mj and Gwen)

Dear god. What the hell?? Sony will forever have to spell their name: F A I L .

@InstigatorGIRL -- Yeah looks like a potential failure of epic proportions in the making there. I'm not interested in sitting through a series of movies about high school angst, and I think it's a safe bet that I'm not alone in that regard.

This blows and will pale in comparison to Ironman 2 The Avengers and Cap. Marvel should put in another $$$ bid to buy the rights before they commit to this "Twiderman" Bullshit.

TheDemonHunter
TheDemonHunter - 1/20/2010, 2:06 AM
@MisterFixit -- If the movies are based on the Ultimate version, and will focus on teen angst in high school instead of heroics, it won't matter that they're introducing everyone in the first movie, because it just might be the only one. This could be the equivalent to Superman Returns.

Tea@ and demon@ They are planning a new trilogy, and i think the full action wont be achieved till the second installement. About heroics you can bet we'll see a couple of unseen villain, for marketing needs of course. They have to sell tons of toys, video games etc.. Unfortunately i know this first film could came out boring, but they can fix all the previous mistakes. Patience :-D

And District 9 had a 30 mil. budget.

This really isn't a big deal. And in no way, shape, or form does any of this say "We're making Spidey all OC-like and stuff"

Christ, this is getting ridiculous.

"...where the villain-fighting took a back seat to the high school angst."

Man, I was just starting to feel good about this movie and now I'm worried! The last movies had a little too much angst with Peter and MJ and not enough action with the villains! I thought that was bad but high school angst promises to be even more tedious!!

I always felt pretty good about Sony making the Spider-Man films (especially the first two) as they were well made movie - however, this news begins to make me feel they've really lost the plot!

Spider-Man has just become yet another character I'd like to see Marvel get the rights back to! ;(

GUNSMITH: The Green Goblin in the second picture you posted is exactly how he should appear in a movie! :)

BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 1/20/2010, 5:25 AM
80 million? The first one had 140 million! This is another reason why Sony should just let Marvel get the film rights. They want to hold on to them, yet they're not willing to put a lot of money into making it a really good movie.
Anyway, I don't get why most of you are such Ultimate haters. I can undertand that you don't like how the Ultimate universe changes some characters, but if you actually read the begining of Ultimate Spider-man, it's like a better written version of the original stuff. It's a little bit more mature, more modern, but still very true to the story of Spider-man. The way they say Ultimate focused on "high school angst" is misleading. It's not some story with Peter being whiny and dramatic. He's dealing with serious problems. Ultimate is great because it get you into the life of Peter Parker, which I feel is a major part of the appeal of Spider-man. Before you hate, go read some USM.

I kind of hope they dont use any of the villains they used in the original trilogy in the first reboot movie.
I think one of the things that made Batman Begins so great was the fact that they used lesser known villains(The Scarecrow and Ra Al Guhl)that were not seen in the previous 4 Batman movies.
If they want to start over maybe they could use the Lizard who hasnt been seen on the big screen yet.
