It was announced a while back that actor Idris Elba, would be joining the cast of Marvel's Thor, as Heimdall. He is currently the only black actor in the cast, and Asgard. Check out what he had to say.

"Yeah man I`m filming that in Febuary, that`s gonna be excellent, I can`t say too much about it though, they`ve signed me to silence, it`s a big Marval comic, it`s exciting, I`ve got a big sword, a real big sword!"

MarvelFreshman: As much as I like the idea of black gods in Asgard, I sure hope they have a great explanition in the film, for why the guardian of Asgard's Rainbow bridge, is darker than everyone else. I think they should go in the direction, where there are different races all over, or in defferent portions of Asgard. That would be awesome. What do you think?

I really don't mind that he was cast. Heimdall isn't iconic for being white or anything, so what's the big deal? Elba is an excellent actor, that's what counts. I'm excited to see him in Thor.

I ,for one, hope they don't explain it at. Any explanation would just sound hokey to me, and would in all likely hood take away from the rest of the movie. Just let him do his thing.

that would be like explaining why Hogun is the only Asian Asgardian.

@thwhtGuardian: I don't mean like have anyone speak of it in the film. I mean like, what I said before. Have more black, even asian characters in Asgard, so He & Hogun won't be just the token guys, and for those who aren't comic fans won't be like where the heck did they come from. You know what I mean.

I get what you mean, and that would be preferable to a back story. However, I don't think you need more ethnic characters either, not that's a bad thing. I mean, they switched Felix Leiter to a black guy, and nobody thought he was a token character, all they cared about was that the guy playing him was excellent. I think it's the same thing here, as long as the character is well done and adds to the story no one is going to care or notice what his race is.

Hogun is actually not a native Asgardian.

And I do not mind at all that he is black, even though they are based off the Norse gods, but it is being based off the Ultimate universe so who knows.

pc reasons?

I agree. I don't think they were trying to be "pc" when they cast him in the role, more like considering the caliber of actors to cast.Idris is an awesome actor.

I'm not totally agianst the guy being cast (because its not like they've changed the race of Thor or anything) but I'm with grif in that it'll take me out of the movie when I see him as its such an obvious token casting! ;(

Guys, check out my X-FORCE Fan Cast under "Fan Fic"!!! :)

Wasn't there an article on here saying that he was dropped? There was even a pic of the guy who was taking his place, if i remember correctly.

ELBA is a class actor, my only problem is lineage. How are they going to explain the fact that he is SIF's brother??? I mean, he's not a "no-name" dude, he fights THOR on numerous occasions and with SIF almost always being with THOR, the issue needs to be addressed.

However, I'm all for "race blended" Asgard, I mean c'mon, almost EVERYONE born there has blonde hair and blue eyes??? Sounds like some Aryan, Nazi, Hitler bullsh!t to me! =D

p.s.- don't jump down my throat, i'm just playin.

At the risk of sounding like a bigot, I think this is nuts! Asgard is home to the Norse Gods!!! Not too many un-fair complexion types roaming the frigid waste lands up there. Just saying... I wouldn't expect to see many Brad Pitt - types walking around in the Black Panther's Wakanda Palace! Way too much overkill on the PC of these movies.

Heimdall went on vacation and got a tan. Moving on....

The only way that it'll take me out of the movie is if he's a terrible actor. everybody screamed about the history of Felix being raped when they made him black in Casino...but after seeing him in the movies i haven't heard a negative comment yet.

I suspect it'll be the same here. If he knocks the character out of the park, will it matter if he's black?
This isn't Captain America, who was iconic for being the best of the greatest generation. This is Heimdall, he's known for being the badass guardian of the rainbow bridge.
True, it seems weird with a white sif, with him being her brother. But I trust that Ken won't steer us wrong.

why does it matter! aslong as the message of the film is write then who cares!

If there is only one black Asgardian then it might be a bit weird. I don't really think it'll ruin the movie for me though!

Heimdall/Elba will say, "I AM THE WHITE GOD, HEIMDALL" and just look you in the eye with that Stringer Bell look.

And no one will say a word.

[frick] it, its not a big deal to me at all. Elba probably just knocked em dead in an audition and they thought he would make a great Heimdall, there doesn't need to be any more to it than that!

Keth M, haha, yep, who the hell would [frick] with String even without God powers!

Dont forget that Lady Sif was originally blonde until she was cursed yb Loki and all her hair went black. Perhaps the same reasoning can apply after all Loki is called the trickster.

So.....we're ok with their being evil frost giants, trolls and all that ish, but the moment a black guy is there its like "wtf is going on here?"...LOL....

Brazilian@ Last i checked i think they said he was banned.

@thwhtGuardian

FYI: Felix was actually first played by a black actor in Never Say Never Again with Sean Connery in 1983. Bernie Casey played the part.

I don't think it matters about Elba playing the part as long as he does a great job. Just think of it as an alternate universe from what you're used to. Hell, it took me six season just to accept Smallville as a superman story, but I eventually got over myself. LOL

You're right, I totally forgot about Never Say Never Again. Which just goes to show that his race wasn't an issue, if it really was I'd imagine that I wouldn't forget.

I could care less about the characters race. Hes a god so he should be beyond human things like race and lineage. Maybe the gods were just fashioned to look like whatever they or their maker damn well pleased? And what about Surtur then? We dont have many twenty-foot tall orange skinned fire demon actors to portray him, but thats okay because hes a comic character from a fantasy realm were, again, things like skin color and ethnicity means little. The same suspension of reality can be applied to Heimdall because its a fiction movie and anything can happen. They have orange, blue, and black skinned gods, why not brown?

And, for the record, I would prefer a good actor like Elba play Heimdall over a meat-head like John Cena any day of the week ;)

Maybe us white guys fancy ourselves as gods lol. I suppose its not far from other mythelogical stories. Kinda makes sense that the keltics and greeks would tell these sort of stories. I think the world has become way more diverse in the past few hundred years. Now those stories just dont apply the same way. We have our own versions to tell.
