More News From Joe Johnston on Captain America

Just when you thought we had heard enough news from Captain America director Joe Johnston, he releases a bit more info.

Newsarama has released their interview with Joe Johnston revealing a bit more for the First Avenger. Check It Out:

'What little is known about "The First Avenger: Captain America" is that it will be set in World War II, around the time of Pearl Harbor. Johnston told Newsarama that he is well aware of the potential risk in shooting a big-budget comic book period piece, but believes it's a story the fans will appreciate seeing unfold onscreen.

"You couldn't do a modern-day Captain America," Johnston said, "and then go back and tell the World War II origin story."

The film will be bookended with scenes set in the present day that presumably will set the stage for "The Avengers" movie.

"That's the way this story ends. [Cap] is...at the end of this film, he's been brought back and been unfrozen, revived and he is definitely a fish out of water. He's a 1942 guy in 2012...it's going to be a lot of fun."

Johnston pointed out that Cap's lack of superpowers are part of what makes him such a compelling character.

"He can die, he can be injured, you know, he can't see through walls and fly and do any of that stuff, we have some great action sequences that stay within the laws of physics...but he's not Superman."

Johnston, who prefers Ed Brubaker's current run on the series to the Cap stories of the 1960s and 70s, admits he wasn't a huge fan of the character or of comic books in general. But he believes that will serve him well on this project.

"I don't think you necessarily want the world's biggest Captain America fan to be directing this film," he said.

Johnston mentioned that one reason he wanted to do the origin story first was because the sequels would take place in the present day. That would indicate that the 'fish out of water' story element mentioned earlier will play a prominent role.

The First Avenger: Captain America is the pivotal piece in the entire Marvel movie puzzle. For an Avengers movie to succeed, Cap has to be a multiplex hero. Which is why it's not surprising to hear Johnston say the movie will feature links to the rest of what will become the Marvel Universe's most renowned super-team.

"We have stuff in our movie that relates to Thor, and we have stuff that relates to Iron Man and the fun is integrating it into the story. If you're a fan, you'll get it and you'll recognize it. If you're not a fan, it just becomes part of the story. We're sort of integrating 3-4 things that are links to the rest of the Marvel Universe. It’s not really difficult. The challenge is to make it seamless, and so it doesn't feel out of context."

Joe Johnston should cast himself as Captain Obvious. I honestly have the least amount of faith in this film, in regards to all the upcoming comic book movies. I just don't Johnston has his shit together and it's REALLY hurting this film. . .

JL@ how can you make that decision yet? how can it be hurting it when it hasn't started properly yet
TheQuestion
TheQuestion - 2/8/2010, 5:03 PM
Gotta disagree with you, JL. He seems to have all his shit together story wise. We wanted WWII Cap, he's giving it to us. We wanted to show him being unfrozen in modern times, he's giving us that. We wanted his classic suit, he's giving us that. We want his Ultimate suit, he's giving us that. We wanted the Red Skull, he's giving us that. We didn't even ask for The Invaders, but you know what, he's giving us that too.

So, with JJ and Marvel giving us so much, how about you give HIM some slack, and ease up a little. Because honestly, right now, Captain America sounds like it's on the right track.

I suppose you can't have enough Cap news, and I'm stoaked to hear that there will be multiple tie ins. All of this I was expecting anyway so it isn't anything monumenal. I'm happy hear they've got a good grip on how to move forward with the story.

Marvel knows what there doing. They wouldn't dare mess up one of the most inspiring characters in America during WW2.

After such an unusually long complete silence on this movie, I can't believe Johnston is suddenly coming off of so much information.

The way he's talking so freely, I sorta think we may get to help him edit the movie.:)

Or.... RYAN McPARTLIN!!

This guy better not muck it up. He wants gritty. Not 60's or 70's Cap? OMG what does that mean? A dirty realistic Cap? I hope not too dark and not too light. Just enough to make him believable. Even 80's cap was great. We'll see. We're watching you Johnston!!!

RandmHero - 2/8/2010, 5:55 PM
Johnston better not give away too much or what the hell will be the point of the movie (besides action sequences and seeing the Cap in real life, and leading to the Avengers....) i'll shut the hell up now :]

@LEEE777 I see you have a new favorite for Cap ahead of Ryan. I too think he would be awesome, BUT the only think I hate (and really shouldn't)) is that he is 6'5, which is taller than Thor, who is 6'3.

I'm sure that whatever Chris will be donning as Thor on the feet could knock him up a couple inches. I either want Iron Man, Thor, and Cap the same height, or Thor taller than the others.

But other than that, I think Armie could pull it off.

i think the reason Johnston has been so forthcoming is because he remained absolutley SILENT for the past three months.
all the news coming from this is getting me stoked.
he is saying all the right things to make a fanboy happy.
ironically, he doesn't like comics.
but it makes me wonder if he ever visits sites like this just to see ou POV.

I think SuperMike left, got his GED, and came back as Joey Misfit.

The Rocketeer was one of my alltime favorite childhood movies.

As I've stated over and over, I don't even like this character, and now am looking incredibly forward to the film.

"3-4 Marvel Elements"? Hard to tell what that means. The front bookend taks care of all my other worries.

I don't see how we're going to get his shield action in there though (in the period part), which is lame. I was with you on the other thread Poni - him throwing his shield is honestly one of the only things I remember about the book that I last read when I was about 14 (30 now).

Johnston is being incredibly generous here.

Nothing about the Cap new I heard is really bad, but I do have a bad feeling about JJ. But I am all excited like a little school girl about the about Invaders! All want from the Invaders is Namor! Cuz then we would be closer to having a Namor spin-off.

Daniel Craig for Namor!

bb@ I get what you mean. You wouldn't want the some of the campy stuff from the comics on screen. But as close to it as possible to the source of material.

bb@ Joe Johnston is this site ready your comments or are you praying to him?

Sorry if I seem rude. It just irrates me when people post comments as if they are talking directly to some celebrity.

Its weird. Well at least to me.

JJ is doing a great job" sounds more appropriate.

While I agree the story seems to be doing pretty good, with the WWII setting (like it should be), I just think that's ALL he has together. There isn't really ANYTHING else we know other than bits and pieces he keeps telling us, and we believe. There's been no casting, which means no costume, just what he told us about it.

I honestly just don't think he's the right guy for this. I hope with all the Blue Lanterns in the universe at my side, that he proves me wrong though.

I'm quite confident in this movie!
Johnston is coordinating with the other
directors and movies and he's being
directed over-all by Marvel!

They are fitting everything together
to make it seamless! You can't ask for
anything better! Now the Directors
just have to direct the scripts that
are before them! Marvel has overseen
the scripts so ya know its being quite
accurate as a movie can be!

The casting for THOR and IRON-MAN 2 are
amazing! The casting for IRON-MAN 1 and
THE HULK were fantastic! I don't think
Marvel has made a wrong move or the
directors of the movies have made a wrong
move yet!

So I'm EXTREMELY CONFIDENT!!!
I'm sure glad FUX...uh, I mean...FOX
aint doing these movies leading up to
THE AVENGERS and THE AVENGERS themselves!
JUST SO GLAD!!!!!

Am I the only one who doesn't like the fact that he's giving away so many plot points? I mean, shouldn't we have to wait and see where the film ends, and all that stuff? What if our hype is built up, and things change to the point where they have to hold off on that until The Avengers? Just sayin'.
jusme6
jusme6 - 2/9/2010, 5:37 PM
@DDD: Fox would never do a crossover movie in the first place. One of the writers for the F4 movie wanted to include references and appearances by the X-Men but Fox insisted that they were not a part of the same universe. All the more reason Fox should burn... Hue Jackman for Magneto in 10 years for the reboot under Marvel/Disney!
