Alex Ross, an American comic book painter, illustrator, and plotter, has done work for Marvel Comics and DC Comics.

Cartoon superhero Captain America's real-life stylist insists Mad Men star Jon Hamm is the only actor who can play the colourful Marvel Comics character.

Ryan Phillippe and Chris Evans have emerged as frontrunners for the coveted role, but the artist who redesigned Captain America for Marvel tells Entertainment Weekly magazine the list of wannabes up for the part does not impress him.

Alex Ross says, "We've been saying for years, if you don't sign Jon Hamm to play this part, you're crazy.

"Captain America is supposed to be the patriarch of the Marvel universe. To get a guy in his early to mid-20s is only thinking about where the character began, not what he ultimately needs to become."

I never noticed before but he looks a lot like Kevin Sorbo.

Both are just too old for the role that could fill the next 10 years or better.

The guy playing Captain America should be old. At least as old as Jon Hamm. It would be nice if he actually looked like a grown man, the kind that could be the leader of a group of super heroes. The guys on the short list for this are a joke.

so should we just skip the origins and shoot to cap in battle from the start if we want it to be so old

Jeri - 3/18/2010, 9:08 PM
It might be alright, but the guy playing cap is going to be playing him for along ass time, in something like, one of marvel crazy 9 film deals. Basically they HAVE to cast young. Also Steve Rogers was young, so they're just being faithful to the material.

IM STILL FOR MARK VALLEY...BUT YAKNOW JOHN HAMM CAN DO IT....HE COULD ALSO DO...BATMAN AND OR SUPERMAN.

I love Ross's work, but everyone he draws looks pretty old. Hamm works for the Cap of modern day that is a leadership figure to the superheroes of the world. However, the Cap of this movie is going to be Cap in the beginning through when he freezes. I'm not sure how many years that is supposed to be, but I think the best thing to do would be to cast an actor in his mid to late 30's. Hamm is way too old to play a convincing young Cap.

I actually agree with Him. I think Hamm would be great for a Civil War/Reborn Cap!

Nah, he's more Hank McCoy IMO.

Does anyone else want to punch pics of Hamm in the face? His face just...pisses me off for some reason.

you guys really have to stop saying that this actor cannot portray this character because of his age, that's just dumb. Robert Downey is 44 and he's Irron Man and nobody complains, you are looking at the best possible person to fill the role.

Upupandaway
Upupandaway - 3/18/2010, 9:41 PM
@charbelelnasr: In those people's defense, Tony Stark has always been portrayed as an established industrialist. Thus, him being a slight bit older is just fine. Cap is a young guy who wants to go into the military after WWII kicks off. His youthful willingness is a part of his story. Cap has to make the transition from weakling to leader of superhumans in one film, which is going to be super hard to cast. Thor and Iron Man are a bit easier because they have always been what they are to some degree.

Hehe, I know it's weird, but Hamm's face just irks me, and I have no idea why. It just does.

I agree with Upupandaway. Casting too young ignores what his role is later, but casting too old ignores what his role is in the beginning so they're equally bad. Hamm doesn't seem like he would work at all for the Cap origin story becase I get the sense that when Steve becomes Captain America, he's pretty young. I think Mark Valley is perfect for older Cap, but he wouldn't work for the origin movie either, so I don't think he's the ideal choice. To me, Matt Damon always seemed to have the look that would work for both the older Cap and the younger Cap, but he doesn't seem to be a possibility any more. Also, you have to remember that they're looking for someone who can play Cap for a long time. Downey is in the suit. Norton changes to the Hulk. Cap is a guy in a costume. Not as easy to make an actor in his late 40's convincing for that role.

@Anil, I don't know I never liked the BuckyCap look, good name by the way. It just seemed to avoid the old Cap if that makes any sense. Just never dug it and the whole chrome look just seemed too 90's Leifeldian to me.

I know there is no chance of Ackles getting the role now because the idiotic CW wouldn't compromise on his contract even if he did get the role BUT, have any of you people whining he can't do it because he's just a kid actually LOOKED at him?

He does not look like some wimpy pretty boy. Yes he's handsome but he's not a 20 or even 25 year old anymore. He's 32 years old.

That is plenty old enough to be Cap. And he's got a manly voice, not a boy's voice and that was true even in at the start of Season 1 when he was 26.

And I can assure you that even the older actors who have worked on Supernatural and have also worked with award winning talent, respect him as an actor. He is consistently given high "above and beyond the call of PR duty" praise by a variety of semi-regulars and guest stars.
