X-Men: First Class Finds A Beast In Nicholas Hoult

According to Deadline, the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class, has gained a replacement for 'Beast' in the mutant prequel.

FOX apparently decided to pursue younger actors to fill the role of major mutants for their upcoming X-Men prequel. One of those characters being Henry McCoy, "Beast", forced Ben Walker, who was signed to play McCoy, to ignore FOX and sign on to reprise his starring role on Broadway in “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.”

Now Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox is setting English actor, Nicholas Hoult for the role of Beast in the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class.

Nicholas Hoult is apparently best known for his role as Marcus Brewer in the 2002 film "About a Boy" and as Tony Stonem in the E4 television series, Skins. And the 20 year old recently appeared in Louis Leterrier's "Clash Of The Titans" remake as Eusebios.

Repped by UTA and UK-based Independent Talent Group, Hoult joins James McAvoy (Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto) and Alice Eve (Emma Frost). With production expected to begin soon, there are many "First Class" mutant roles to fill.

DCMF - A little familiar with Hoult's work, to me hes never come off as a total badass, which I assume "Beast" is expected to be, when the prequel hits theaters next year June 3rd. What do you think?

Marvel is all over the place with casting.
Just googled him. He doesn't have the body type that is necessary to play beast, even in makeup.

@creature: Then I recommend that he hits the gym before shooting. how about you?

I don't think that he's going to have enough time to bulk up enough, August is pretty close. I hope they don't give him phony looking muscles like they did with the Thing...

Awesome cast!

I don't know why this casting is making me think that this movie is gonna be a REBOOT.

Hoult has a good height for the role (6'3''), so he'd only need to bulk up and he'd be ready.

I suppose he'd do just fine. I've never seen him act (though he does look vaguely familiar), but he kinda looks the part...

The human version of the character is supposed to be a little bigger than this guy, so maybe they'll use make-up or CGI to bulk him up a little!? Either way, I think Hoult is a decent choice! Nice find DCMF even though Benjamin Walker was probably a little closer to how I would have pictured a younger version of the character! :)

Josh: The Beast is a big dude. However, he does have a strange shape to him, very lanky with huge hands and feet.

6'3 is too tall for the role. Not that I care how tall he is but beast is 5'10. He just needs to put on about 20 lbs of muscle with a focus on specific body parts as follows in order from most important to have the real beast look;

Arms(forearms, Biceps, Triceps, and fuller wrist)
Chest
Shoulders
Flaps
Lats
Collar
Legs

I would make him do a cross regiment between a defensive linemen and a gymnast. The mismatched workouts would cause his muscles to shock themselves and he would get results quick, with a low fat and high protein diet. Then as more downtime workouts he would do Capoeira, Jujitsu and Yoga. The Yoga would promote core strength and flexibility which Beast would need. The Capoeira would create a agility regardless of his size and is very close to how beast would fight but he would need the Jujitsu to ground the style more and make it seem like a very instinctive style.

I think he will be great as Beast. It's too bad the studio wont ever read my Rambling post. Hey maybe some of you can use it and let me know your results.

I hope that most of you have realized that Marvel didn't cast him *cough*@Creature*cough* haha. Plus why are people even caring about this cause it's gonna suck :P

WTF? Why? Why do they keep going after scrawny wimps to fill the role of Beast? Guys with muscle can't act?

I don't know who he is but I didn't know who Hugh Jackman was before the very first XMen movie and he was great as Wolverine. So I'll have to wait and see how this movie turns out.

I really can't imagine this guy growing up and becoming 'Beast'. I can't see it. I can't see it in anyone, minus Fassbender of course.

i seriously doubt they are concerned about his physical shape vs beast.... they are just picking these guys from a photo shoot going on in the same building, throwing them into a casting that looks like a police lineup and behind the mirror is someone's teenage daughter. they measure by length and volume of the scream as well as hand flailing, crying and fainting

x-men evolution: twilight- first class

Eff i dunno about this pick... they need to just make the beast a guy in a suit with a CGI cat face. that would rule!

@CDB- Although I bet you're right. That would cost them more money. He's definitely not apish like the original Beast, so prosthetics it is. Hot glue and a blue rug: you've got a Foxed up X-man.

@MovieTheaterLad- It's not just bulking up. It's a body type thing. I'm sure he could bulk up, but he'd still be a tall no ape-like big dude.

He's a great actor, I'll give him that. Recently saw him in "A Single Man" w/ Colin Firth and he definitely has the chops. That said...I just don't look at him and see Hank McCoy.

But, hey, I'll give him a chance.
