Kevin Feige On Captain America UK Filming, Red Skull, & The Avengers

Marvel Studios' head honcho speaks with Total Film on the Captain America movie, including the filming location & Hugo Weaving's "frightening" Red Skull. Check it Out!

Total Film managed to get a few minutes with the main man behind Marvel's much anticipated THOR, Captain America, and The Avengers films, Kevin Feige. Reiterating why the studio choose the United Kingdom to film The First Avenger, Feige also discuses Hugo Weaving's Red Skull.

Why have you chosen the UK to film Captain America?
"Well it’s that two thirds of the film actually takes place in Europe and there are many scenes in and around London. So it just made sense that we film it where the majority of the film takes place. Having been here now for almost two and a half months prepping and twenty-some days into shooting."

"The history here is pretty impressive. I was at Pinewood yesterday and you walk past pictures of the set of Tim Burton’s original Batman and all the amazing work that Donner did on Superman. Everytime we’re
on a new stage in Shepperton somebody tells me this is where the war room was for Dr. Strangelove. Or this is where they shot some of 2001. There’s such an amazing genre film history here and the technicians and the crews and the sets are just some of the best we’ve ever had. It’s been a pleasure."

How the Red Skull looking?
"Hugo Weaving has been in the Red Skull effect, in costume for a couple of weeks now and it’s a hell of a lot of fun. We gave people a little taste in San Diego about what his character will look like but now that we’ve started to work with the actual skull it’s going to be a lot of fun and a rather frightening villain."

What’s happening with The Avengers?
"There’s not much I can tell you but Joss [Whedon] is hard at work with the script and we’ve hired most of our crew. They’re looking to design and build and prepare for when we start filming next year."

Described as a classic adventure love story with an edge by director Joe Johnston, Captain America: The First Avenger swarms into theaters July 22, 2011!

DCMF - I'm being told that the Captain America filming crew will begin transforming the streets of Manchester into 1940s New York this week, setting up for a dramatic car chase scene involving exploding vintage vehicles and more. In the meantime, expect more set images to emerge online in the coming days.

Fantastic. I have little faith in Feige, but I can't help but be optimistic. I concur about Red Skull having the potential to be the best villain in Marvel and hopefully even movies in general. Major room for crazy psycho evil genius here.

Great find again DCMF! :) This all sounds great and his explanation for why they're filming in the UK makes perfect sense...hopefully that'll silence the people who cant work out why they're not doing it all in the US, lol! I cant [frick]ing wait until they finally reveal Red Skull!!!

This movie sounds like it'll be pretty sweet, but I'm more excited for Thor and Green Lantern. I don't really think Johnston is a good director but hopefully he proves me wrong.

By the way guys if you get the chance check out my Batman story by clicking the pic below

Just follow the Brubaker/Epting version of Cap and Red Skull and we'll be happy. Epting's Red Skull was sick! While Brubaker turned Cap into someone who we can actually look at as being as real as a comic character can get. Not to mention his storylines are top notch! Reading his current run with Cap was like watching 24, you just couldn't wait to see the next one.

Brubaker should serve as a consultant...

Can someone ask Feige or Johnston or somebody if they're doing a D-Day scene? If I could ask one question, that would be it.

I am excited that Joss Whedon is connected to the Avengers. I have been watching Buffy lately and Joss is GREAT at combining a number of different complex characters w/differing personalities (Willow, Oz, Buffy, Xander, Tara, Giles, Dawn, spike, etc.)
I am confident he will do well w/ the Avengers

I think this will be the best of the movies, out of Thor, Avengers and Captain America. Purely for the fact that it seems to have the least expectation about it.

@Starsapphire, Your right about Hugo Weavings laugh and though I haven't heard the footage from Comicon I can imagine that he does a convincing German accent. I'm pretty stoked for Captain America, as an older comic fan I've been waiting for someone to do a decent Cap film, the others have sucked.

I'm tending to think that Thor will be more successful than Captain America. Though I take the point that expectations are probably less for the Cap movie.

I like the idea of the Captain America movie being set in WW11. It sort of reminds me of a fanfic of mine "Spitfires over Stalingrad"

Hugo Weaving has an awesome voice regardless if there was an accent or not lol. I mean, it'd be weird if he didn't have a german accent in the film, but lets say hypothetically he didn't, I wouldn't really mind all that much cause his voice is that awesome lol.
