Mark Millar's Thoughts on Upcoming Comic-Book Movies & Visual Mastery

The comic genius shares his opinion on how today's tech has caught up with comic books' vision, & on upcoming CBMs Captain America, THOR, Green Lantern, & more.

Mark Millar, the comic writing genius whose most notable credits include 'Kick-Ass' & 'The Ultimates,' recently chatted with Sottish Daily Record's John Millar. Mark shares his personal thoughts on the much-anticipated adaptions of Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger & THOR, FOX's X-Men: First Class, Warner Bros.' Green Lantern, as well as Sony's The Green Hornet. He also acknowledges how today's technology has caught up with the stunning vision & imagination of the their source material.

"Captain America is a brand name and everyone knows it, whether it is from Peter Fonda's character in Easy Rider or through reading the comic books. It is a name that is as famous as Spider-Man or Superman but Captain America has never been a hit TV show. It hasn't hit the mainstream, even though it is a name that everyone recognizes. This film may be a tough sell but I'd love it to be a hit because I am a big fan of the character."

"The idea of a Thor movie is really exciting. It's like a combination of Lord of the Rings and a Marvel superhero. It fuses the mythology and superhero genre together. It's the only time that's happened. The potential is great and the timing for this film is perfect."

"I'm a big Seth Rogen fan, so just the idea of a slacker superhero is a cool one. The guy who plays Kato [Green Hornet] is a top martial arts expert so he is obviously going to be the action star. I am excited about this film although it is a hard sell because it doesn't have the fan base of the Marvel or DC Comics characters."

"My old pal from Kick-Ass, Matthew Vaughn, is directing [X-Men: First Class]. After Wolverine and X-Men 3 - which weren't that good - I think they wanted to 'do a Star Trek' and go back to basics. Matthew told me he had always wanted to do a Dr Nostyle film with an international network... but with mutants. The film also has talent like Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy. That's another reason why comic book movies are so big. It used to be bad TV actors that played superheroes and now it's the cream of the cream."

"I think [Green Lantern] is going to be the biggest one next year. It has a very charismatic lead in Ryan Reynolds. I don't think people realize yet how much they love him but I think he's going to be the next Harrison Ford! There are three Green Lantern films planned because they know this is going to be massive. It's like Star Wars meets Superman."

"Big-screen technology has caught up with the imagination of the comic books. Before this happened Spider-Man always looked like a guy on a wire and The Hulk was a body-builder painted green. Now characters like these can look as good as they do on the pages of a comic, if not better. These days you are not limited by budget or technology. You are just limited by imagination, which is a great position to be in."

It's only two months until the "bloodbath" year approaches. And we have all these CBMs to look forward to, and then some, while Captain America parades into theaters July 22, THOR storms May 6th, Green Lantern beams June 17th, X-Men: First Class unites June 3rd, and The Green Hornet ventures January 14th. We're taking over!

IF they wanted to do a STAR TREK reboot to FIST ASS, they would have, and had the chance to do a REAL X-MEN: FIRST CLASS with the ORIGINAL classic team!

All everybody is getting is that MAGNETO movie nobody wanted LOL... just twisted and in a messed up way! : P

F you Miller, thanx for KICK ASS tho, and can't wait for KICK ASS II! ; D

THOR & GREEN LANTERN = The epic of comic book/superhero movies!!!

Well said LEE! I'm sure that Millar (like any other comic book writer) can see what a stupid mess the movie will be, but he's bound to be a bit bias when he's buddies with the writer and director of the movie! He's not going to bad mouth it, no matter what he thinks. :P

@Josh and Lee...that is true he won't be biased towards a friend. Still give it some time, we haven't seen any official images or even a teaser of First Class, so keep some optimism in it. I think Green Hornet will do moderately well, because of Rogen anyway, but it won't be a huge success. He does bring up a good point, The best of the best are handling these roles much better than a TV could.

This is why I love Millar, he talks a lot and says them in a smart way, giving off an optimistic view, rather than wait and see mentality like most. Stan Lee doesn't count because he never bad mouths anything he created. I agree that Cap may be a tough sell but I believe it will do amazingly because it's not part of any political agenda. Its just a throwback to the action serials they had in the 40s and the director has done the Rocketeer, so its a match made in heaven.

For once I agree with Millar. I think Thor and the Green Lantern have the potential to be outlandishly huge. I still give the edge to Thor though because I think The CGI in Lantern will make or break the film.

"These days you are not limited by budget or technology. You are just limited by imagination." Words of wisdom. Another reason why I like Millar.

JOSH @ Well said too dude and exactly man, you've 100% hit that nail on the head!

RodSVilaca @ Yeah man, that and THOR is gonna blow all the rest away! (Well apart from CAP & Cowboys too, looking forward to them also!)

In fact, I really really hope GREEN HORNET even wipes FIST A$$ away and makes it big!!!

Even if Fist Ass shocks us all by being unprecendentedly awesome, Green Lantern is going to knock it out of the water. I'm worried about Captain America, though. Could be a stinker. I love Millar, I think he's misunderstood. Yes, he's a bullshitter, but he just likes to see how bullshit can create mythology through the mass media.

Hmmm...I have faith that Thor, Cap & GL will be nothing less than epic...and as far as X-Men First Class goes, I just hope it will be good from a film aspect rather than a comic book adaption...because we already know it A-bombed the comic story in itself...and at least with the new Star Trek it brought the original team together rather than twisting it around and bringing in team members that are later on as the originals. And that's all I have to say about that...haha nice find @DCMF though!

I really hope that Thor and Captain America can become a success next year. The one thing that worries me is the fact that neither are that well known outside the comic book world. I know Iron Man has managed to do it. I've got really big hopes for Captain America as I really love World War II stories. I think 2011 is going to be a really interesting year for comic book movies.

Intruder, you like Captain America best because it is more realistic than Norse mythology and a power ring from outer space......

We will see....And dismissing X-men so early is foolish, the production has shown nothing to say it will be bad.

if First Class ends up being the best film next year,
i'ma go kill myself,
green hornet? i'ma go kill everybody then myself.

but regardless, let's hope for a good year and some badassery in movies,
millar is great when he doesn't write to the least common denominator

Ryguy88 - 11/7/2010, 10:08 AM
I'm not doing anymore back flips for first class than I am for Thor, Cap or GL, I just need to defend it's honor more often because people seem to think that they know how good a movie is going to be before it is even finished....Maybe guys like you should apply for positions with movie studios so that the big execs will know how good their movies will be and how they will perform before they are released. We all have certain expectations for things, I just tend to stay between neutral and optimistic for things until I see them. And who gives a crap which mutants they are using!!! A good movie is a good movie and a bad one is a bad one.

6. Green Hornet (Seth Rogen is not a superhero)
5. Cowboys & Aliens (the cast is great, but I HATE Kurtzman & Orci)
4. Green Lantern (top-notch director, but everything else about this film screams meh; the footage was boring)
3. X-Men: First Class (spectacular cast, spectacular director)
2. Captain America (Everything about this film looks great, except for Johnston)
1. Thor (Ken Brannagh is AWESOME!)

I really don't get the hate for First Class. Sure, X3 got truncated by Ratner, and Wolverine was a clichéd mess, but Matthew Vaughn has a stellar track record, as does the rest of the cast. I also love how the film is being set in the 60s, and for the most part seems to be a superhero film without any blatant usage of powers or fights. And I don't care that Jean Grey or Scott Summers aren't in this movie.

Sue me.
