Jon Favreau Talks Iron Man 3 Continuity of Marvel's Cinematic Universe

Chatting with MTV, the director of the Iron Man franchise discusses the third installment claiming it'll basically be a sequel to Marvel's Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers.

"I don't know a lot about 'Thor,'" Favreau told MTV News when we visited him at the "Cowboys & Aliens" editing studio. "I've talked to ['Thor' director] Kenneth Branagh. I've met the cast members. I had a conversation with ['Avengers' director Joss Whedon] in passing, giving him my two cents about the film."

"In theory, 'Iron Man 3' is going to be a sequel or continuation of 'Thor,' 'Hulk,' 'Captain America' and 'Avengers,'" he said. "This whole world... I have no idea what it is. I don't think they do either, from conversations I've had with those guys."

"Honestly, right now 'Captain America' and 'Thor' are their big priorities, and you learn things by shooting and making movies," he explained. "The script is one thing, but when you actually see what you land on at the editing room — especially with Marvel where they film, cut, film some more and shape the film — you really learn as you go."

While THOR is set for theaters May 6, Captain America: The First Avenger hits July 22, next year. And The Avengers assembles May 4, 2012, with Iron Man 3 hitting the year following, May 3.

Seems pretty awesome to me!
And talking about AVENGERS sequel. Masters Of Evil would be kick ass on that, imagine that happening as this new avengers cartoon. Loki wants revenge on them after the first film(if he ends up as the first film villain) and then he and the Enchantress join with another villains to form the Masters Of Evil.
And the Mandarin for IRON MAN 3 :)
Awesome find @DCMF!

Well, it makes sense that it would follow on from the events of The Avengers. The challenge for each of the solo movies will be how they'll explain why they dont just call in their fellow team members when they face a bad guy! Regardless, cameos in eachothers movies is a must! Good stuff DCMF! :)

I think that once some more Marvel movies have come out, Iron Man 2 will seem a lot better than it did at first. It has the rather arduous task of setting up the MMU, and so it has a lot of ideas start that won't pay off till later movies.

@jbak.... it isn't the storyline I was talking about.... but I think the final robot-battle-scenes where much too chaotic, short and cheap...... expected a more intensive longer whiplash fight...... It looked like the director was getting bored and wanted to finish the movie....fast....

I love continuity and all but it seems like Favreau got screwed with this whole thing.

He made IM which was awesome but then his sequel had to basically be an Avengers prequel. And now the success of his 3rd IM movie is going to bank on those other movies which he has nothing to do with it.
AlReg
AlReg - 12/6/2010, 3:51 PM
It sounds like the filmmakers have no idea what they will do with their movies after the Avengers. Continuity is sometimes a problem in comics it limits what writers can do in their own books. Can you imagine the nightmare that could come with movies? If something significant happens to Thor for example then Branagh has to follow or else risking undermining the whole thing. And what about actors I am sure many of them do not want to play superheroes their whole carrier and with the crossover status in the movies they are obligated to play the character in even just cameos rather then them wanting to be there.

I know fans love this premise but there is nothing that says that it will be a good idea just because it gets people excited does not mean it will work.
AlReg
AlReg - 12/6/2010, 4:00 PM
@Intruder

What The Avengers is proposing is making the filmmakers become obligated to other movies they have nothing to do with another then the Marvel banner and The Avengers movie with so many egos, so much to keep track of someone will get mad down the line. Someone will make a mistake.

It's common sense to assume nothing ever will go 100% sometimes things mess up.
marvel72
marvel72 - 12/6/2010, 4:06 PM
@ intruder

i think we are in store for something huge, the build up to the avengers was like the testing ground for something bigger.

i think the most exciting ideas are coming from marvel studios.

dc are just well behind with current trends.
AlReg
AlReg - 12/6/2010, 4:15 PM
@Intruder

They are obligated because they are making movies with characters that will not always be of their own exclusive use.

If something happens that is big to a character in Avengers then in their own movie that arc will have to be continued.

Or the complete opposite could happen to preserve the individual movies The Avengers could be forbidden from having big character moments in the movie so all The Avengers ends up being is a summer blockbuster.
AlReg
AlReg - 12/6/2010, 4:31 PM

Sorry it makes you mad but I do not have much confidence in this idea and the interview just came off like they do not know what to do after The Avengers.

This kind of makes me feel uneasy cos Iron Man 2 was pretty much a prequel to the upcoming Marvel movies, and look how well that turned out. I just hope they try to make this more of an 'Iron Man' movie and less of a Marvel gathering.

The way I look at it, Marvel has turned movie making into a team sport. Instead of individual competition, like olympic gymnasts, Kevin Fiege is quarterbacking the most awesome team in movie making history. He's surrounding himself with the best and brightest, who are all team players, (Writers, directors, and stars,) and using them all to tell the true story of Marvel. The entire scope of the Marvel Universe.

Yes, it's possible the ball might get dropped by any particular team member, running backs or wide receivers, (AKA directors, actors, or script writers,) from time to time. That will always happen in any Hollywood movie. But by banding the films together, Marvel is creating something greater than the sum of it's parts.

I have no doubt The Incredible Hulk, which wasn't a huge box office draw, will gain in popularity (and DVD sales,) after The Avengers. (Even with Mark Ruffalo recast as Banner.) Iron Man 2, which suffered mixed reviews due to "too many plotlines," will pay off in Captain America and The Avengers, and become even more relevant as time goes on. Something singular films rarely ever do.

And once RDJ has done 3 Iron Man movies, he might just welcome getting a free check for walk on roles in other films, as well as other actors. Remember, Iron Man himself is entirely CGI, as is Hulk. These characters can continue to appear for years, with just the slightest hints of the actors behind them to keep continuity. Even just a few quick voice over lines could keep Iron Man in theaters for decades.

It's really a brilliant strategy, and the future of modern CBM storytelling.
SkylerMystwood
SkylerMystwood - 12/6/2010, 6:50 PM
@AlRig - I hear what you're saying, man, and I do respect your opinion, simply because what Marvel is trying to do has never been done before. But for all the flaws in Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man 2, (and flaws that will most certainly be found in Thor, Captain America, and even The Avengers,) when all is said and done, comic book fans and mainstream audiences alike will flock to collect every movie in the Marvel universe sagas, even more than people paid for the first three prequel movies to "Star Wars."

And I believe Marvel hasn't yet put out a movie quite as dreadful as "The Phantom Menace." I'm just sayin'.
JohnTom88
JohnTom88 - 12/6/2010, 7:10 PM
I rather take IM 3 off the Avengers affair and go with a loud bang with the Mandarin.

RDJ is not gonna continue acting as Tony Stark anyway considering his age so is better to make a very good impression under a self-contained story so they can reboot the IM franchise with a younger actor 3 years down.
90caliber
90caliber - 12/6/2010, 8:55 PM
Alreg makes a good point. These actors dont want to be just cbm actors. Look at RDJ. He has all types of other projects. As these younger actors become more bankable their going to want to venture out into other projects and other roles. If Marvel doesnt have a clear plan their gonna bungle this project. I dont think story line continuity is going to be a problem as much keeping all the actors involved contracts or not.

BlacktainAmerica
BlacktainAmerica - 12/7/2010, 10:25 AM
And whats with all these reboots? that's just a way to suck money from us and an excuse to make a crappy first film. if your going to do something do it right the first time.if not call it a lost. Like WB make the last Harry Potter film two parts.that sucks. They didnt have to do that. The entire movie was no action and Harry just standing around in open space.Bad movie! I read the book we all know what happens.Just get to it. Down with Voldemort

[frick] Armour Wars. Seeing armoured suits knocking the crap out of each other is boring as hell, and we've already seen two films full of it. Give us something new and exciting and mystical. Give us the Mandarin. Give us Fin Fang Foom.

Favreau is scared of Mandarin and Fing Fang. His dilemma is with the introduction of anything "mystical" or "other worldly" into his tech world. Hulk and Thor take him out of the battery chest box.
Superman8

@ Flagg

Totally agree. They already made it very clear in IM2 that nobody can do Tony better than Tony. I've had enough of seeing people trying to duplicate Tony's suit only to lose and make a big deal about how smart Tony is.

Considering Thor brings mysticism, and he's in the Avengers with Iron Man, they won't have to do much work to explain the Mandarin.

Favreau has no need to be afraid of the mysticism aspect, Branagh will take care of that with Thor.

If Tony is so smart, let's see him pit his wits against real magic.
