Jon Favreau Hopes Iron Man 3 Opens Worlds with 'The Mandarin'

The Iron Man franchise director further discusses the third installment, now centered on expanding Tony Stark's real world to the dimensioned Marvel Universe. Check it out!

Sitting down with MTV's Rick Marshall once more, director Jon Favreau shares more opinions on the forthcoming Iron Man 3 movie. He now discusses expanding the "real world" aspect of the franchise, to the real Marvel Universe filled with other worlds and dimensions. With Favreau also revealing that he only has hope for The Mandarin villainzing this time around, watch the interview below.

"If you remember, 'Iron Man' was a very normal world. It was based in our real world, with a few little things exaggerated," Favreau told MTV News. "The technology was exaggerated slightly, but really it didn't feel like you were stepping into a superhero world. It didn't feel like you were stepping into the Marvel Universe."

"By the time 'Iron Man 3' happens, you will have had three other superheroes revealing themselves at least, in addition to S.H.I.E.L.D. and Black Widow and whoever they have in 'Avengers,'" he explained. "So now you're going into a world where you open up the paper and you're reading about villains and heroes and a lot of people with different types of powers. Everything was tech-based in 'Iron Man,' but the world is opening up very much."

"There's a balance that has to be struck, but there's a tremendous opportunity for humor, and character, and with Joss they got somebody who really understands the underlying material and has proven that he's good and clever with his interpersonal communication," said Favreau. "So I look forward to all of that."

"I'm involved with 'Avengers,' so as I'm working on ['Cowboys & Aliens'], I'm supportive and more than available for them as little or as much as they want me to be," he added.

So does this changing universe and the introduction of magical elements in films like "Thor" mean we're any closer to seeing The Mandarin's diabolical blend of sorcery and science?

"I hope so," said Favreau. "Because all my stuff was tech-based, and now you have other worlds and inter-dimensions and this sense of history — which I think is quite cool — that we started with the Stark Expo."

I could see the Mandarin's rings having something to do with Thor either the rings being Asgardian made or maybe the rings are in Odin's Castle like the Infinity Gauntlet or the Cosmic Cube

earzmundo@remember the finfangfoom cameo from IM2.Im hoping that the manderin visits that museuem exhibit?or whatever after stark donates something and He brings the fin fang foom statue to life:
Photobucket

also maybe the rings could be asgardian tech or something
,and since the IM3 is a continuation of the avengers I'm hoping the story of the avengers has the Masters of evil/Hydra/The Ten Rings invading asgard or something with help from loki and they allude to the Madarin with a Ten rings agent stealing some asgardian tech.

Awesome. It'll be great to see Iron Man take on an enemy who's not in another suit of armour! Plus, it'll be fascinating to see the character out of his comfort zone and taking on a whole different sort of villain...Mandarin is THE best choice. Good stuff DCMF! :)

Also I like to add That I think That The Ten Rings should be the main villain(s) of IM3 and I think among their operatives, including their leader the mandarin, should be:Count Neferia and his daughter Madame Masque,Ghost, and an army of Ultimo robots.

Mandarin is absolutely necessary. No question.

@nuck - yeah, screw this trilogy talk. We need to think at the James Bond level. Keep making movies with the same actors until they're two old, then recast and keep moving.

Amazingly MassE it looks like Marvel is thinking exactly right. Saying that Iron Man III will be something like a sequel to Avengers is the same sort of idea.

Mandarin all the way.

I loved Favreau's Iron Man movies so far but I've always been against this sort of argument: "it's all reality-based, tech-based so that it makes it more realistic and more believable to the viewer."

In many ways, it's the opposite for me. If you're really putting Iron Man in our world, it makes me very aware of all the little details, the physics, the reality etc. If Iron Man existed today in this world, it just wouldn't work, due to lack of storage of energy, the physics of no-wing flight of a man shaped suit, etc. There needs to be some fantastical elements to it.

I have an easier time "believing" Lord of the Rings not because it's more realistic in our world, but because the things that happen in LOTR are more believable in THEIR world -- and I don't get knocked back into reality.

So here's to them making the Mandarin more than just some Asian guy with cool tech. If he really has mystical rings, it'll make Stark's synthesis of a new element and minaturization of an arc reactor far more "believable" to me.

It would be interesting to see how they'd bring Mandarin to life on screen, if you look at the previous movies both villains never called by their names (Iron Monger or Whiplash/Crimson Dynamo), so are they going delve into an origin of Mandarin or are they going to start of the movie similar to what they did with whiplash...
Will the Mandarin be at the beginning of the movie wandering Feudal China having him find some ancient tech rings from an alien race then having him teleported into the future to raise Hell or have something more like the Ten Rings leaders searching for something and finding these mystical rings, it could sound fantastical or too simple but it really would be interesting to see how they'd go about bringing Mandarin to life and explaining things thats why Thor is important blueprint to how to bring things mystical to film...

@LEEE I like Ken Watanabe too but if not him what about Hiroyuki Sanada also from The Last Samurai....

i said this in the last IM article

Thor opens things up in terms of magic so Favreua wont have a lot of explaining to do.

The third, and hopefully last film HAS TO have the mandarin, like everyone has already said, he's been hinted at, so not manifesting him would be a disappointment.

In the special features of IM1 Jarvis announced to Tony that he received like a hundred messages and three were from the Mandarin. It was edited for the final film, but either John missed it and it slipped by and made it into the special feature's "making of" thang, or John kept it in there on purpose to further his point about the Mandarin being the main bad guy.

@DCMF: nice man! You keep coming up with great stuff!

Mandarin must be Chinese, so no to Watanabe. China would declare war on us if they cast him. Yun-Fat Chow is probably the best choice, he was an awesome villain in Pirates of the Caribbean. Also a villain fight that lasts more than 10 seconds would be great too.

Wantanabe and Chow Yun-Fat Are both fantastic actors. I honestly think the best choice would be Tony Leung chiu wai (not tony leung ka fai).

Leung is a real actor and he could give the mandarin some real matt fraction like substance.

Mandarin is so much more than a bad guy with a magical weapon. I think Leung would do wonders on the screen

I was watching IM1 the other day, and noticed that the leader of the group that kidnapped Tony Stark had a very ornate ring on his right hand. So I got to thinking that maybe the 10 rings is not the mandarin, but 10 people who found the rings of power and dont know their true power. just a thought.
