Marvel's Shortlist For New THOR 2 Director And Screenwriter Revealed!

Following Patty Jenkins' exit, Marvel Studios are swiftly looking at Thor 2 director replacements in Game Of Thrones' Daniel Minahan and Alan Taylor; and a new scribe!

Close sources of the ever-reliable Hollywood Reporter have exclusively revealed who Marvel Studios are closing in on for Patty Jenkins' replacement as director of their much-anticipated Thor sequel. With both contenders having a popular TV series in common on their resumes, THR have also disclosed the shortlist for a new screenwriter coming on board.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the company is looking at two director prospects: Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan. Marvel was also in the middle of hiring a writer when the Jenkins exit occurred. Don Payne had written a draft and Sheldon Turner was among those being discussed to work on the script, but the new shortlist of possible writers consists of John Collee, Robert Rodat, and Roger Avary

Coincidentally, or rather considerately, both Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan have directed episodes of the ever-popular medieval fantasy television series Game of Thrones. And before Patty Jenkins was locked in, Brian Kirk was considered for the gig, who also directed a Game of Thrones episode. What do you think?

And regarding the screenwriters, John Collee's credits include Happy Feet and Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, while Robert Rodat has penned the story for Saving Private Ryan. And Sheldon Turner wrote X-Men: First Class' story, while Roger Avary is best known for Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-winning Pulp Fiction. What do you think?

For those who don't know, the sequel will follow the Norse God "literally" to other worlds on an adventure, with the Warriors Three and Lady Sif, among other Asgardians. And also exploring Thor's deepening relationship with the all-father Odin, and love interest Jane Foster, look for the much-anticipated THOR 2 in theaters July 26, 2013.

omgz Marvel is fail. OMGZ That's whyz I lovez Nolan.

Just prepairing everyone for the nolanites. I for one have faith in Marvel, sure from our stand point it may look like they're control freaks, but again, maybe it's a good thing Marvel produces their vision and product, without letting anyone change too much. For all we know, some directors might want to change a lot that has been already established either in the movies, or in Marvel history, and that's something that Marvel may have seen as a bad thing. Who knows.

They're going for cheap choices who can be easily controlled. Both of these guys have done some GREAT work with TV shows such as Mad Men, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under and, uh, Sex in the City. You really would think they'd be looking at slightly more qualified choices to helm the follow up to the most successful CBM of 2011 though. And another rewrite? Not good...

Meh... they need to really go for some great directors and let em do some of what they want. I really hope Marvel doesn't make another IM2 still with that sad IM2 wasn't super bad, it just wasn't quite the quality of the other films. Still even IM2 was better than most other CBMs that anyone else has made.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS STORY, AND STAYING TRUE TO THR SOURCE MATERIAL..IM FOR GAME OF THRONES DIRECTORS..DOESN'T GET MORE EPIC THAN THAT NOWADAYS..IT'S RIGHT UP THEIR ALLEY.

Yeas Iron Man II, the lone rotten egg out of TIH, Cap, Iron Man I, and Thor. Yes, Marvel has such a rotten formula. And Iron Man II earned $623,933,331 worldwide while this years top earner, Thor took $448,512,824 million worldwide.

I hope Marvel doesn't want to ruin every sequels of their movies and add this movie to worst cbm sequels.

I hope they know what their doing. Because Thor need too be a huge epic while still being a character driven story.

Hard to pull off. I hope they see something that we don't.
We don't want some action comedy.

I'm thinking that marvel doesn't just want to produce these movies but they are wanting to direct them at one point too.

To me that would be a very bad idea.

Ok. Now Im more interested in the sequel.

Game of Thrones is a fantastic show.... if they let the director to give us scenes as good as most from that show...

ok, Marvel, you can have a real winner this time, at least for me.

Meh. I rather watch a new Marvel character on film, like Doc Strange, Ant-man or even another Punisher.

@Jodez99Branagh claims that he turned them down because he didn't have the time to direct the sequel.

Hopefuly that is the truth and that he could be back for a third Thor film.

I don't think marvel is trying to be cheap. I just think that they truly think they know whats best for their films and how to make the best movie.

I think they are a bit cocky(maybe they should be)right now. I think that are holding their control over these films a bit to closely and might be hurting the movies for it.

I don't see the problem of hiring the guys from Game of Thrones.
Jon Favreau's "biggest" movies before the first Iron Man were Elf and Zathura, kids films.

I don't know... Do yawl think Michael Bay make a decent movie under marvels control(which seems to be tight) and a good character driven script with some good writer.

I'm not a huge fan of Bay's approach to film making or his formula, but his scope in action and production value is threw the roof. No one can really deny that.

Opinions?

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY

unlike the writers of GL,the ones on this list don't suck ;D

and I don't see Arronofsky getting involved with any CBM btw, from either DC or MARVEL.

and Thor 2 the GL of 2013?

It's amusing to me that people are getting worked up about Marvel going with up-and-coming directors while holding up "Iron Man 2" as an example where things went awry, since it was the one project they've done where they used an established director who had done multiple hits and was following up his own success.

Iron Man 2's problem was writing, pure and simple. They tried to improvise far too much of it without having the basic story structure polished to a compelling central narrative.

Thor 2 has some quality writers being considered, and to those who think rewrites are bad news let me just say that no project gets a new director without going through new rewrites. The director will have his own ideas on what to focus on and how to do it. There will be changes.

@TheRealEnrico Bay would be a perfect fit, as the marvel films other than Ironman have been packed full of cheesy lines, dire acting and over the top action!!

Back when Marvel was courting Brian Kirk I said that the better choice would be Daniel Minahan based on the fact that Minahan's episodes of GOT were much more emotionally resonant and yet more action oriented than Kirk's episodes IMHO. As for all the studio-heads in this thread who say that Marvel is cheaping out by not hiring an established motion picture director to direct Thor, feel free to chip in on the price tag and I'm sure Marvel will hear you out.

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY

wait wait wait, let me get this straight...Darren Arronofsky LOSE to Zack Snyder?...WHY?

and didn't he left The Wolverine for some family issues or something like that? I don't recall exactly what.

and I honestly didn't know he wanted Batman, thanks for the data.

Roger Avary is a dirtbag...he went to prison for a year after getting a passenger killed in a drunk driving accident which he caused...he might have co-wrote Pulp Fiction, I believe Quentin did the bulk of it... he's just not someone I see Disney hiring

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY Darren left The Wolverine several months after losing out on MOS, in fact he didn't even sign for the wolverine until after MOS was given to Snyder (though it wasn't very long after).

@eatmyhit "Bay would be a perfect fit, as the marvel films other than Iron Man have been packed full of cheesy lines, dire acting and over the top action!!"

I do agree that marvels other films had way to much of that of crap. But there movie weren't as bad as you imply.

Thor had depth mostly with the scene involving Odain and Loki and that's about it. Cap had just a little bit of depth only before the super seem. I thought the Incredible Hulk was was just fine and was decent movie.
