Kevin Feige Offers An Enthusiastic ANT-MAN Update

Although nothing too solid, Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige has offered an update for one of the many long-productive films post-The Avengers, declaring Ant-Man Closest It’s Ever Been!

The folks from Bleeding Cool News recently scored a videoconference chat with the leading man behind Marvel Studios' successful cinematic universe, Kevin Feige. And the first segment of their chat regards the anticipated Edgar Wright-directed Ant-Man adaptation, which has been in development for almost five years.

"It’s somewhere. I’ll just say it’s closer than it’s ever been in its long maybe eight year history, and I usually e-mail Edgar every two or three days and over those eight years its got further away and closer… we are now closer than we’ve ever been. So I hope it will come together shortly."

Kevin Feige went on to discuss the possibility for a 'Civil War' story-line fitting into future Avengers installments.

You can obviously see that in the decades and decades of Avengers comics prior to the Civil War event, the conflict between the characters, the differences in world views of all the characters, that led up to what happened in Civil War, certainly that’s in this movie, you can see how different Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are in a great way. In this movie the question is are they going to be able to stop fighting each other long enough to fight the bad guy. Civil War would someday be a great crossover eve but here it’s more in the character interactions than a direct easter egg.

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble on May 4, 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to "Marvel's The Avengers," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013!; and “Thor 2” on November 15, 2013.

Even though we've had an awesome new Avengers Tv spot, this is THE BEST news I've heard all week!

Can't wait for the Ant-Man movie! He may not seem it to most but Pym is a great character, flaws and all.

High fiving the shit out of DCFreshman!

Just cancel it already and introduce him in a short film or The Avengers.

I'd like an Ant-Man movie, but only if it actually is Hank in the present day. If not, then cancel it, as I said. The Avengers needs Hank for many stories, and it would benefit the universe better that way.

I honestly don't think Ant Man and Wasp could bring in a large audience for a full length movie. Their abilities don't give them the same appeal as some of the other heroes.

I would much rather see them brought in the same way Hawkeye and Black Widow was and focus on characters with larger appeal like Black Panther and Doctor Strange.

[frick] Civil War.

@BruceLeroy

All I know for sure is that they could bring in me. I love those characters and I would love to see that movie. If my meat-head friends don't want to come because they only like a certain kind of superhero, that's their loss.

People on this site need to be less concerned about what average Joe thinks of these movies, It's really killing the quality. I want comic book movies not watered down adaptations. My non-fan friends have become interested in these characters because they've seen how unashamed I am about my love for them.

As much as I've loved Edgar's movies, there is a thin line between bad ass and corny as [frick]. I'll just leave it at that.

Just1Superguy@ I think each Hero movie should 'cover' different type of ScFiction and I think ant man is very original

Seriously , a scientist who create an evil intelligent robot and got the ability to shrink or become a giant Man, would do an amazing movie for all the family.

Strange. I just found my old Essential Ant-Man volume, just before seeing this article. If Wright adapts that in a strange post-modern pop-art kind of way, setting it in the '60s or '80s and getting all those silly villians in there in a Scott Pilgrim Vs. the 7 Evil Exes kind of way that'd be awesome.
DukeAcureds
DukeAcureds - 3/30/2012, 3:50 PM
I heard he's doing a mixture of two eras, the Pym era and Scott Lang, taking up the mantle, in the present, in a Watchmen kind of way. Ultron would be awesome as the main villian.
Necroxide
Necroxide - 3/30/2012, 3:51 PM
doing a civil war for a 2 would destroy all Spider man and wolverine ideas
Necroxide
Necroxide - 3/30/2012, 3:53 PM
yes it woud me dam nice !! my idea was Ultron should be the villain of avenger 2 and ruin the avenger reputation and everything at the end .
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 3/30/2012, 3:54 PM
oh god if ant-man is in the avengers 2 that'll be stupid. just do giant man. or a scientist that knows how to make himself big and small. take the ant part out of it. thats lame. a super soldier, two master assassins, the demi-god, and we have a hulk... and a bunch of ANTS!! OHHH!!!! gay.

Giant man on the other hand?? visually awesome AND a worthy fit for the team. leave the small flying around bullshit for Wasp. i don't need two little people running around. especially if one is riding a bee.

As long as we've been waiting for this, I'm almost sick of it. I love me some Hank Pym, but it's ridiculous. 8 years they're waiting on this guy? 8 years for him to get his shit together? Anybody else would've been out the door by now.

Edgar Wright's approach to Ant-Man sounds very cool. I would like to see the movie happen.

I just hope Marvel Studios doesn't let the movie stall for many more years. Ant-Man is one of the original Avengers.

He deserves his own movie.
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 3/30/2012, 5:55 PM
Pux@ sure ants can kill someone but like you said - you yourself would have to put me in that situation. and during the final battle we see hulk ripping apart ultrons, thor smashing them to bits and... ants....? thats really what you want? ya know it just doesn't fit for me. Even tho he's a founding member i just never cared about ant man or figured him for a threat. who is his arch nemisis? professor news paper? doctor bug spray? "Oh ant-man is here? lemme call terminex." - all i'm saying is if you're putting hank pym in the movie it should be as Giant man. way cooler. way more of a threat.

MrAgamotto@ he communicates with all insects, no? or is it just ants? either way at least bees have stingers.

it's still dumb and i would bet every dollar i have that ant-man in all of his glory next to the avengers will make the general audience laugh themselves right out of the theatre. the fact that edgar wright is directing this movie pretty much shows you that Marvel themselves don't even take the character seriously.

the most interesting things about hank pym is that he slapped his wife once and created ultron (something Tony Stark could easily do in the movie.) - yeah i really want to root for that guy...

[frick] that noise. I want young cute women for these roles.

I hate the idea of some guy like patrick wilson or aaron eckhart doing this. I'm thinking more like Adrien Brody or even Neil Patrick Harris, one of them could actually bring some life to the role

People obviously in "Ant-man" he discovers how to shrink. In Avengers 2 he discovers how to grow into a giant.
