Andy Lau Reportedly Turns Down IRON MAN 3 Role

It appears Chinese Internal Affairs actor Andy Lau has turned down his scientist role in Iron Man 3. Including his potential replacements, check out comments from one of the producers.

Last month, it was revealed that Chinese actor Andy Lau was keen on landing a role in the much-anticipated Shane Black-directed Iron Man 3 movie. However, Want Chinese Times via Want Daily now claim the Internal Affairs actor has turned down the pivotal scientist role, which is said to be an ally of playboy Tony Stark. Dotting on the reason(s) for Lau's departure, and who's being considered for his replacement, check out the reports.

Chinese media now report that Lau has pulled out of possible involvement due to the birth of his first child with wife Carol Chu on May 9. The Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post reported that the producers of the film had contacted Lau but were turned down. The frontrunners for the role are now said to be Chinese actors Chen Daoming and Wu Xiubo. One of the film's producers and CEO of DMG Entertainment Group Dan Mintz apparently told reporters earlier this week that the one of the movie's Chinese characters will likely be filled by an actor over the age of 40 and strong English skills.

In regards to the selection of Asian actors for the film, and being co-produced by a Chinese production company, Mintz added that the idea arose from the film's plot, not the other way around. The producer insisted that the film's stars will be chosen for their suitability for the role, rather than their impact on the Chinese box office.

Filming for Iron Man 3 is underway in Wilmington, North Carolina and expected to move to China in a few weeks.

Described as a “technological crisis thriller,” set in the world of international war, arms & terror, Marvel Studios' “Iron Man 3” stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Andy Lau, Ashley Hamilton, James Badge Dale, with Sir Ben Kingsley and Jon Favreau. Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) takes over directorial duties from Jon Favreau, who helmed the first two “Iron Man” films. Principal photography will occur primarily in North Carolina and China. And “Iron Man 3” is set for release in May 3, 2013.

Damn would have been awesome to see Lau in this movie. Great actor.

Well as long as they replace him with someone great im fine.

Yeah to jazzman's point, spending time with your first child and wife seems like a pretty reasonable explanation for turning down a gig.

Hmm that's too bad, I have been hearing good things about him. Oh, well as long as they get a capable replacement. His reason is legit, he made the right choice on that.

@Natrag: You forgot some things on your options scenario:

for A) Be a complete and total douchebag, deadbeat dad, and terrible husband

for B) Still make a shit load of money

You are an idiot

Shucks. It's a shame that he had to turn down the role. From where this movie is heading so far, I'd say that this will be a BIG and fresh opening to our next Phase of the ever-expanding MCU. The future will hold many surprises for us. Can't wait. :)

Stay EPIC, my friends!

If you're reporting the actor turned down the role, don't be lazy and leave him in listed in the movie synopsis immediately after your article.

I don't appreciate the racist humor. Being the fan I am of International Cinema, I believe the negative comments really show how shallow a pool some of you swim in. That being said, it is a LOSS to this production that Mr. Lau's performance will not be seen. He is a very talented actor and quite better than many of the American artists considered "A-Listers" here. He may look back and regret not taking the role, or he may be content understanding he has made his fame there. I'd never consider him a sell out. Now, nearly 40yrs later, American audiences were wrong about Bruce Lee then, and still can't acknowledge or accept real capability presently.

That sucks he had to turn down the role. It was a for a good reason though.

When they start filming in China, hopefully we'll see some sets pictures of Ben Kingsley.

I'm curious to see how The Mandarin will be adapted on the big screen.
