GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Release Date Pushed Back Nearly Three Months?

Only days after it was revealed a Guardians of the Galaxy movie will be expanding Marvel Studios' cinematic universe in 2014, the anticipated release date that was announced earlier this year has been pushed back from May to August. Specifically, Box office Mojo exclusively reports that Walt Disney studios' Buena Vista distributor has moved the yet-to-be-announced Marvel flick from May 16, 2014 to August 1, 2014.

Beyond spacing out the release of the studios' other 2014 film, Captain America 2 (April 4), this move also makes room for other blockbuster films. These films, all sequels, include Transformers 4 (June 27), the untitled X-Men: First Class sequel (July 18), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (May 2), and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (May 23).

Despite fairly reliable sources already confirming that Guardians of the Galaxy will be the currently untitled project, we can expect the official announcement at next week's San Diego Comic-Con convention. Marvel Studios' panel for Iron Man 3 will kick off July 14, 6:00pm – 7:00pm, at Hall H. What do you think?

Marvel Studios has dubbed “Guardians of the Galaxy” a “big space epic” that will introduce various cosmic entities from the Marvel Comics universe. The superhero team first appeared in “Marvel Super-Heroes #18” in 1969, created by Arnold Drake & Gene Colan. In 2008, the team was rebooted by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning in “Guardians of the Galaxy (vol. 2) #1.” The team's live-action roster will include Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. And also Thanos, the villain who made his live-action debut unexpectedly during Marvel's The Avengers mid-credits stinger, is expected to reprise his role. With a screenplay written by Nicole Perlman, a graduate of Disney's screenwriting program, no director is yet attached. And distributor Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has scheduled “Guardians of the Galaxy” for release on August 1, 2014.

Interesting... I wonder if they'll keep the June release date for Guardians and maybe August is Black Panther now. Huge announcements coming soon per Agent_M who tweeted me earlier.

This will take a lot of special effects work. So I hope for a LONG post-production on it. it's going to take a lot of work to not make it cheesy. just use the comics as storyboards and you'll be fine.

Not a big move. Perhaps they're making room for Ant-Man?

From Variety's piece, it didn't sound like GOTG was in that spot all along, it was being fast tracked to take that spot.

It could be that this is whatever was in that spot before, being delayed to make room for GOTG in May.

Or I could be just speculating wildly.

@JKM I think getting away from Spidey might have been the ultimate goal since Spidey is still Marvel. I believe they still get a cut of the profits don't they?

ksommer - 7/3/2012, 11:12 AM
@batlizard11 I believe that too. There are conflicting reports. They originall had two dates, May 16th and June 29th. Then they jumped up to April for Cap 2. One report says that was the June 29th date and others say the June one is still out there.

Who knows. We'll find out at SDCC.

I'm guessing this is to avoid competition with The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Sony had a May 2014 release date for that in place since last August, I think.

@IM53, I don't think that's too much to ask! :)

@IM53, I think it's a little premature to compare Rocket to Yoda. Yoda had four movies of build up before going bazerk on Count Dooku. It caught everyone off guard because of the build up.

as long as it comes out in 2014,they can release whenever they want.

To those commenting about Rocket Raccoon: He's not going to be in the movie. Latino Review said they'ed be traveling back in time from the 31st century, which means it's the original GotG, which means no Raccoon or Groot.

I think you will all agree that we anticipate a Gaurdians of the Galaxy movie over a Black Panther movie. I see this as being Black Panther that is pushed back and GOTG is getting the earlier date to build anticipation for Black Panther. Storywise it may make sense in story progression to see GOTG prior to BP.

Is this because the big announcement was met with a colossal MEH?

They had too, Spidey comes out pretty soon beforehand. They wouldn't want to pit a new franchise against Spidey.

They haven't officially announced anything yet , so saying its been " pushed back" seems a bit premature. The original rumored info could have been wrong to begin with. I'll wait for the official marvel announcement.

The movie would have come out between ASM2 and the Apes sequel. Moving it to August-where there are currently no other releases-is a smart move. Plus, now they can move Captain America 2 into the summer movie season by giving it GOTG's original date.

Hopefully this means we'll be gettig Marvel flicks during 2014. But, goddangit, I can't wait that long just to finally watch a GotG movie. But time flies. We'll see it soon enough. Plus, I agree with @53 on Rocket Racoon. That little son of a gun won't need to be worried about. He'll do fine. :)

This will open a whole new direction for the future Marvel films. It'll be big, my friends. :)

Seriously? They have yet to announce Ant Man, Hulk 2, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Shield, The Vision & Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Ms. Marvel, Power Man and Iron fist, Spider woman, Black Panther, The Falcon, Winter soldier, or Sub-Mariner, but they are putting Guardians of the Galaxy at the top of their list?!? Nothing against the Guardians, but is this REALLY the top priority for the next Marvel film?!?
TheAmazingSpidey63
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 7/3/2012, 11:46 AM
My imagination can't stop on the possibilities that we'll get from GotG. An all-out battle on Earth (or another planet) with Thanos against the Avengers and the GotG. I hope it's not too much to put in Nova along with GotG and the Avengers. The Avengers will have new recruits as well (Black Panther, Ant-Man/Giant-Man, Wasp, Vision, Ms. Marvel, War Machine).

I guess everyone knew who the characters in Star Wars were before it was released and maybe back then talking aliens were acceptable and they are not now? I don't see what everyone's concern about this is Rocket Raccoon will steal the show, talking trees and animals that act like people that's what got Disney to where they are today the studio has a lot of experience with that stuff I think they will do it justice. When Rocket Raccoons 4 issue mini series came out it was a hit, even i thought it was odd when i saw the first issue, but once i started reading it I couldn't put it down, granted I was a tween back then, but isn't it Disney's job to keep the kid in us alive.
