James Gunn May Helm GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

After a “long search,” recent reports indicate that Marvel Studios has approached Super director James Gunn to helm their anticipated interstellar super hero film, Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Hollywood Reporter has not only learned who Marvel Studios desires to direct their highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy big screen adaptation, but also others they're considering for the big space epic film.

According to the trade paper, James Gunn beat out Peyton Reed, and duo-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden as Marvel Studios' top choice to helm Guardians of the Galaxy. However, in case the deal with James Gunn doesn't go through, the studio may choose either of the aforementioned directors.

The Hollywood Reporter adds that James Gunn was chosen for his “sensibility and his ability to mix comedy elements with action and horror.” And his credits include Dawn of the Dead, Slither, and most recently Super.

Back in February last year, James Gunn expressed interest in directing a superhero film involving superheroes that aren't “the most popular in the world.” And Gunn even revealed he was discussing a project with Marvel Studios. He also said that he planned on directing something with a bigger budget than Super, and “more of an entertaining pop-show.” And “Guardians of the Galaxy” certainly fits the bill.

The other contender, Peyton Reed has directed Bring It On, The Break-Up and Yes Man. And before Tim Story took over, Reed was attached to direct the 2005 Fantastic Four movie. Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden's directing credits include It's Kind of a Funny Story, Half Nelson and many documentaries. What do you think?

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—the big cinematic event exploring an interstellar super hero team-up, featuring Marvel characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. While story details are under wraps, the film is rumored to lead with a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

From a screenplay by Nicole Perlman and Chris McCoy, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. While a director and ensemble cast have yet to be announced, “Guardians of the Galaxy” will assemble on August 1, 2014. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute the film. In addition to “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and the currently-untitled sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers,” the third highest grossing film of all time, on May 1, 2015.

Not a bad choice. Much better than the Russo Bros. for Captain America.

Wow...that's kind of out of left-field, but the guy did say he'd like to direct a Marvel movie, and Super was pretty good, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Doesn't matter who directs any of Marvels movies. Marvel still has complete control and won't let anyone ruin their movies.

if nathan fillion can get himself back into shape (shouldnt be too hard, devoted actors do it all the time) he would make a good starlord

Expected. Marvel studios almost NEVER chooses well known directors. So people expecting any of the fanboy choices *Duncan, JJ abrams, ect* just give up. Marvels way more likely to choose some unknown dude who barely has experience in the genre over somebody we want.

I agree with Booyah

It seems the directors in these films are just figureheads. Jon Favreau was pissed with Marvels interference.

It does worry me that this man screenwrote scooby doo.....but I doubt hes even writing, so lets hope for the best

i have such high hopes for this movie. however, the scariest part about it is that this will not appeal to any audienc except for us fanboys/girls. i remember when i saw Scott Pilgram people were leaving the theater. Now that movie was one of my faves of all time but i think when people dont understand the material a movie automatically bombs. i really hope this is successfull but i cant see anyone but outside of our community taking it seriously

yea but those characters are well known already (for the most part) so people knew what they were seeing and knew what to expect. i mean read the comments on some other articles. already hating on Racket Raccoon when they clearly never read or heard of GOTG before all this movie news

I have complete faith in Marvel Studios at this point
