Made from the sacred metal Uru and forged in the heart of a dying star, as the all-father Odin insists, Mjolnir had subtle changes in Marvel's The Avengers, since its first appearance in Thor last year. And given that the God of Thunder will return in Thor: The Dark World, a slightly new design for the mighty hammer should be expected as well. While previous Dark World set photos offered a glimpse of Mjolnir, wielded by the star Chris Hemsworth, a rather mysterious set photo (via @LHamston and @Sparky4Ever84 ) has surfaced highlighting the subtle changes. With the only difference seemingly around the handle's endpoint, check it out below!

Left: Mjolnir in Thor; Right: Mjolnir in The Avengers

Exploring Thor's relationship with the Asgardian all-father Odin, as well earthbound companion Jane Foster, “Thor: The Dark World” follows the God of Thunder to The Nine Realms beyond Asgard and earth. And as his evil half-brother, Loki, returns for Asgardian justice, a new threat rises. Also rejoining Thor are his fellow Asgardians, Lady Sif, gatekeeper Heimdall and Warriors Three, as they encounter mythical Norse creatures among evildoers.

“Thor: The Dark World” stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Jaimie Alexander, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Stellan Skarsgard, Ray Stevenson, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Rene Russo, with Alice Krige & Kat Dennings. And Alan Taylor (“Game of Thrones”) takes over directorial duties from Kenneth Branagh, who helmed the first “Thor” film. From a screenplay by Don Payne and Robert Rodat, “Thor: The Dark World” is set for release on November 8, 2013.

I don't see much difference, still I love the design they did.

I like that the hammer has more of that fantasy look. It was a wise decision to depart from that alien/fantasy/shiny hybrid look (which worked for Asgard) and have a more "Game of Thrones" feel. This director is a wise fella. (yes I know he directed GoT)

Only different than the first Thor where it was much shorter, and even in that if you pay attention the hammer is multiple different sizes throughout.

The Hammer was 15% larger in the Avenger movie. I heard Hems say while talking about it to Joss.

I just wish they will always keep this one and not go for that awful ultimate mjolnir

I honestly don't have a problem with the change, but why? Don't they have the old props or at the very least the molds from the old props sitting around? Why do they have to redesign it for each movie?

They are likely making these tweaks so they can sell more replicas. It has to be all about the money. Like the darker color in the handle though.
