Brian Bendis Explains How GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Movie Inspired the Marvel NOW! Series

Explaining how the forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie initiated the new Marvel NOW! series, which he's headlining alongside artist Steve McNiven, check out what Brian Bendis says!

Comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis has been deeply involved with Marvel's Cinematic Universe ever since it debuted with Iron Man (2008), for which he wrote the post-credits sequence that introduced Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. While still in the mix with the many films that're forthcoming, Bendis and artist Steve McNiven were recently announced as headliners for the Marvel NOW! comic series, Guardians of the Galaxy. And given that the interstellar superhero team-up, of the same name, is getting the big screen treatment (slated for 2014), Brian Michael Bendis explained in a recent Marvel.com Q&A how the movie's development inspired the series.

“I work with the Marvel Creative Committee on the movies, and this is one of the projects that we’ve been helping out with since the beginning. So, in the context of that, I was doing a lot of re-reading and research, and research of course means reading a lot of comics! I’d read all the [Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning] stuff, and I’d read a bunch of the older stuff. Just as a fan, just as reading, not as a writer thinking about the characters much or anything. We were talking about the characters, what they want and their reliability. I dug up some of their origin stories, particularly Peter Quill’s origin story, which as I tweeted recently I had come across, and decided that it was, for my money, as good as Superman or Spider-man’s origin—it was just no one knew it! It was literally a two-page story in MARVEL PREMIERE about 34 years ago, and I just really really liked it. As the movie was getting closer, and more drafts were coming in, they called me and said “Listen, you were so excited during the Guardians movie calls, we need to get this book back in the public eye. We really want to make it more a part of the Marvel Universe.”

Although Brian Michael Bendis' Marvel NOW! series may not include elements directly from the film, it was recently reported that the Guardians of the Galaxy movie would focus more on the roster's humanoid characters - Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer - rather than the talking tree and gun-toting raccoon, Groot and Rocket. It's also said that the three characters will be getting major visual and backstory updates so they'd fit into the cinematic universe. And for the remainder of Bendis' Q&A, he drops character dynamics and elements from the comic series that would be interesting enough to translate on-screen. So, check out the full interview over at Marvel.com!

Special thanks to Chewy for the heads up

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—the big cinematic event exploring an interstellar super hero team-up, featuring Marvel characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. While story details are under wraps, the film is rumored to lead with a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

Directed by James Gunn from a screenplay by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. While a director and ensemble cast have yet to be announced, “Guardians of the Galaxy” will assemble on August 1, 2014. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute the film. In addition to “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and the currently-untitled sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers,” the third highest grossing film of all time, on May 1, 2015.

Ah I remember the time where some people thought an Avengers movie wouldn't work, would be a gigantic unwatchable cluster[frick] or just wasn't going to happen, blah, blah, blah... Now it seems it's the Guardians' turn. You wait and see people.

I think it's less about what the characters look like and more about their personalities.

That's the difference between Hulk, TIH and The Avengers portrayal's of the Hulk and why the Lizard was bland.

yea some people are saying it's a surefire flop. others are saying its a surefire hit.

i disagree with both. this is something that could go either way. especially right now when all we have is the concept art, and james gunn as director. that really isn't much to go on...

Bendis doesn't seem to get what makes the Guardians great. He doesn't seem to get what the fans liked about them.

Bringing them to earth, and making their story revolve around it? Making them hang out with the Avengers? Adding Tony to the team? This is the exact opposite of what cosmic fans want from their cosmic stories.

The Guardians were great because they were so far removed from the rest of the Marvel universe. They were in their own corner, filled with characters and places that were rarely ever shown in comics, let alone fleshed out. It gave us a whole new perspective. And whole new universe of characters to read. Bendis is intent on taking that all away, and making them like everyone else. Just making them the space branch of the Avengers solving earth based problems.

Also, Rocket Raccoon isn't an alien that happens to look like a Raccoon. He's a [frick]ing Raccoon. He's never denied being a Raccoon before. Why is he now Bendis?

@PartyHard...them being so removed from the rest of the Marvel Universe got their book cancelled, as good as it was. If a little mingling keeps their book in circulation, we should be all for it.

And Tony's not a member, he's a guest.

Also you don't know what Bendis intends, cus the series isn't out yet.

@xcrementus

I'd rather have the series be cancelled than have it be something it shouldn't be just to force sales to promote a movie. You can read the interview provided in the link to read all about his intentions with the series. He laid it out quite clearly. I didn't say anything that he didn't.

The series was over anyways. Thanos Imperative ended it. The team disbanded, and the Annihilators were formed. Star-Lord, Drax, Thanos and Nova were dead.

yeah but according to what i read on wiki because the only character im remotely familiar with is rocket racoon, THIS DUDES A DICK!!! he mistreated and stole the role that he has. how can that be compared to superman or spiderman. this movie seemlike its be another green lantern. but i guess we'll see. its ultimately up to the mindless masses out there that still think "robert downey jr. plays such a good ironman." when in reality he plays himself. he's a more likable keanu reeves. marvels gone mainstream and it kills me.

I liked the original Guardians, personally.

I am EXTREMELY hesitant on Mr. Racoon.

And if myself, a lifetime Marvel fan, am skeptical then I worry about the people who only know these characters through the movies.

I just picked up some recent Guardians so I can only be hopeful at best for now.

Can someone give an actual reason to why they think this wont work, because i can't see it being anything to do with the characters I mean kids are gonna find a talking raccoon and a giant tree smashing and blowing stuff up hilarious and as Equivocal pointed out there are so many other characters that people love that aren't exactly the norm.

As for non comic book fans not knowing who they are being a reason it might not work is a bit of a silly and stupid reason imo, are you telling me for a movie to work people need to know who the characters are before hand, isn't that what the whole point of a movie (well the first) supposed to be about. I wouldn't take what happened with Green Lantern for a reason why this can't work either, the team behind Marvel studios is not the same as WB\DC and this isn't me hating on them but Marvel Studios is better then WB\DC when it comes to movies at the moment imo.

If people were going around saying this is going to be a flop because there some how comparing what the Avengers did and thinking this will be a disaster because it will not make as much, all I got to say to that is "no sh!t sherlock" I dont see any comic book film other then Avengers 2 and JL (when ever that gets made) making what The Avengers did.

With Joss Whedon now having some level of input into the marvel studio films such as this, im sure this movie will be fine. So excited also slightly hesitant just because of the modifications they are making but it will probably be changes they will be able make work just like jarvis being a AI instead of a butler, or ironman not being tonys bodygaurd (i like how they hinted at that in the iron man), Jane Foster being an astrophysicsts, Asgardians being an alien race instead of 'actual gods', the rainbow bridge not being an actual bridge between asgard and earth that you could walk on. They all worked fine, now that i just wrote that i think they will make the right decisions. Just hopefully they dont change to much on the characters origins. Joss Whedon wont let us down i can assure u that XD

I think Gaurdians will be very successful...we havent had a good space faring sci-fi film in a while and audiences will go and see it because of the success of the other marvel studios properties...I imagine it'll be like Star Wars...but in the marvel universe!!!

That can only be a good thing!!!

This film could work really well, or really tank, depending on whether they have fun with the team concept ala the Avengers. If its too awkwardly written/directed, the rapport between the Guardians, then it could really be a dud.

My only familiarity with GotG is from years ago and only vague memories at that. I do remember the name Vance Astro because I thought it was such a cool sounding name. Hope we at least get to hear it in the movie.

Fingers crossed this movie's a success because if it is, all bets are off! Marvel will be able to do anything! As long as they don't try to reboot Howard the Duck! So I guess that's ALMOST anything ;-)

marvel72 - 10/17/2012, 5:14 AM
people who think this can't work as a movie should actually read some guardians of the galaxy comics.

-annihilation conquest
-guardians of the galaxy 1-25
-war of kings
-realm of kings
-the thanos imperative

if this movie has a budget of $150,000,000 & makes $500,000,000 its still a hit,of course no one is expecting the avengers kind of numbers we'll probably not see anything close to that until the avengers sequel.

the avengers + star wars = guardians of the galaxy

I agree, this could be quite awesome. I just hope they don't limit the film on purpose, like they did with Thor, just so it fits with their "wider universe" and they have the next one take place on Earth or whatever.

@MiracleMe, come on now, no Howard the Duck reboot? That property is ripe for revival. Of course it'd have to go the R-rated comedy route (one of the few Marvel properties that I actually think would be more suited for an R-rating). Sure it has a ridiculous premise...but so did the movie Ted, and that did incredibly well...so reboot that shisit...of course we'd have to have the eventual Man-Thing (tee-hee) crossover...

Look, I hope the movie does well.
I've loved Abnett & Lanning's space opera (it's probably the best thing Marvel has put out in the past 4 or 5 years). But I find the whole reason for this particular article offensive.
Quote,
"It's also said that the three characters {Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax} will be getting major visual and backstory updates so they'd fit into the cinematic universe."

This is categorically the wrong thing to do!
If you want to make changes to the plots and backstories for your movies, so that they are more palatable to generic movie gong audience, fine. Do that.
It was done for almost every superhero movie ever made, to varying degrees of success. Nature of the beast.
But the idea that we are now going to alter histories, costumes, and plots to pre-existing source material . . . IS NUTS! Why? So that in some press junket down the road, a director can say that they were 100% "faithful to the comics and their fans?!?"

And I don't want to hear any bs counter-argument that sites Jimmy Olson as some kind successful judicial precedent (nor Donner's Krypton designs). These are WILD exceptions to the notion that we should let the comic writer's do the writing, NOT the movie bureaucrats.

All this coming from a guy who has been dying for the return of the incredibly interesting and unique Steve Englehart-Star Lord that made his debut in '76.

Stop changing the comic encyclopedia to suit the movies. The sad thing is, they don't even need to do it.
