Cobie Smulders Set To Return As ‘Maria Hill’ In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Alongside Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury & Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, it seems the Captain America sequel will surely see S.H.I.E.L.D.'s return in full force, now with Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill.

Amid confirmation that The Grey actor Frank Grillo will portray the villainous Crossbones, Variety has nonchalantly revealed yet another addition to the ever-growing cast of Marvel's forthcoming sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Although not much of a surprise, considering early plot details had announced that S.H.I.E.L.D., the Marvel cinematic universe's defense organization, will play a major part in the “political thriller,” actress Cobie Smulders is set to join The Winter Soldier movie as ‘Agent Maria Hill.’ Smulders is the fourth actor to reprise their role respectively from director Joss Whedon's critically acclaimed, box office behemoth, Marvel's The Avengers.

Beyond the inevitable plot elements, Scarlett Johansson's Russian spy Black Widow is expected to feature heavily in the film's story, and Marvel Studios are currently searching for another female lead. Therefore, Maria Hill's role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier will likely be a minor one.

Described as a political thriller, Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where the highly anticipated film “Marvel’s The Avengers” leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D, and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders with Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and is based on Marvel's classic Super Hero Captain America, who first appeared on the pages of “Captain America Comics” (#1) in March, 1941. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is presented by Marvel Studios. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso & Stan Lee are executive producers. The film releases August 1, 2014, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Think we'll get Renner as well?

@dezdigi

Renner should be in it if all the other SHIELD agents are. Smulders was a disappointment in The Avengers. Cutting most of her scenes was the right decision. Hope she manages to be more convincing this time around.

@walking

Tell me about it. I understand she's playing a super serious military agent, but she's just flat as an actress. It came off even worse in the bloopers.

While this is another good news, I just hope we don't stuff in too many characters in there, y'know? And I do agree with the CBMers in here that Cobie's role in The Avengers didn't hit me as awesome or great. It was average, really. I do hope that in future MCU films, she can hit that point of an amazing performance as Maria Hill. :)

She was the "Kat Dennings" of Avengers... Well, just her deleted scenes/Gag Reel. God, I cannot stand her.

Also, seeing as how Black Widow is coming along on this film, I'm pretty sure that she and Barnes will develop a love relationship just like in the comics. I would love to see that.

And to have Hawkeye on board this is also great. This may be a great opportunity for Marvel to play out more of him, in terms of character development, a bit more screen time, and good action sequences with this guy. But Marvel really has to play it safe here. While the additional characters that are onbaord this film is music to my ears, they mustn't forget that this is a Captain America film. They got to keep it centered on Cap while handling the supporting characters. So here's to Captain America: The Winter Soldier!!

@PantherX and @jimpinto24 - I'm starting to think the same thing. Marvel has to be on top of their game to handle such additional characters in a MCU stand-alone film. Not that I doubt Marvel or anything like that. I trust them with this, so again, here's to another Cap film. :)

I really hope Hawkeye isn't in it.

Half the Avengers in one movie? I don't like the sound of that.

Sometimes it looks like this'll be the new Iron Man 2.

why some of u guys complaining about too many characters. its does not matter not all the characters will have major roles. they can put as many people in the movie its just how they use them.
RAWRG
RAWRG - 10/29/2012, 4:16 PM
ok guys calm down she got the character right and sure she isnt that great of an actress she is mostly on television and avengers was her first BIG film you would understand me if you watched HIMYM lets just wait for more appearances of Maria Hill in the MCU and not judge her on one film and a minor role if Whedon thought she could've been Wonder Woman and believed that she could be Maria Hill then lets just wait and see. Let's just enjoy watching these films. CHEERS!

@jazzman - Believe me, dude, I have faith that Marvel will do splendid with this flick, the cast, the story, and the characters. I was just a wee bit concerned about the amount of characters in this film. But still, my trust and faith in this outweighs this minor concern I have. ;)
