Kevin Feige Talks Marvel’s PHASE TWO Approach; GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is “95% In Space”

Addressing Thor: The Dark World & Guardians of the Galaxy as films that'll tackle the Marvel universe's cosmic side, teasing the direction for the overall slate, furthermore, check out what Feige says.

The Latest issue of SFX Magazine will feature an exclusive chat with Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige, in anticipation of Iron Man 3. Of course, Feige also discusses plans for other Phase Two entries, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and ultimately The Avengers 2. Whether “cosmic” is a fair description of Phase Two, Feige said:

“I wouldn’t say that in a broad sense. The Thor film and the Guardians Of The Galaxy film certainly are cosmic. Guardians and Thor will take the brunt of the cosmic side of the universe, particularly Guardians, which is 95% in space. I think Iron Man 3 shows the other side of Phase 2, which is delving deeper into the characters. Throwing them on a much more personal journey. And Captain America will showcase… What’s exciting to me about Cap – sort of about Iron Man 3 too if you look at it – is it’s tonally almost like a different genre. Shane Black’s described Iron Man 3 as a Tom Clancy sort of political thriller, which I like a lot. We hired our directors on Cap because they loved our explanation that we really want to make a ’70s political thriller masquerading as a big superhero movie. Just like with the first film – we got Joe Johnston because we said, ‘We want to do a ’40s World War Two movie masquerading as a big superhero movie.’ I love that we’re doing a sequel to a film that’s a completely different genre than the first film. I think that’s fun. And the comics do it all the time.”

Whether Guardians Of The Galaxy will “prove as integral to Avengers 2 as each Avenger’s solo film,” Kevin Feige admits, “I would say that it does not. It’s much more of a standalone film. It takes place in the same universe. And when we’ve been on the other side of that universe in other movies, you might see those characteristics in Guardians, but the Avengers are not involved with what’s happening out there at this time.” For the full-length interview with Feige, pick up the latest SFX issue or stay tuned to Comic Book Movie later this week. What do you think?

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—A big space epic featuring an unlikely cast of Marvel characters, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot and Rocket Raccoon, who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. So far starring Chris Pratt and directed by James Gunn from a screenplay by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014, in 3D. In addition, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; the sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers” on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

70's in tone.

As in 70's political thrillers like Three Days of the Condor or All the Presidents Men, etc.

so if GOTG is nothing to do with the Avengers? Is the rumoured Iron Man 3 post credit scene of him going into space invalid?

I'm really hoping that, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will do what Captain America: The First Avenger did which (for me personally) was be different than the rest of the comicbook movie crowd. Feel different than a comicbook movie, while being one and still having the likable characters and an overall good movie with great performances. I'm really looking forward to Sabastian Stan as The Winter Soldier and Frank Grillo as my favorite Cap villain, Crossbones.

@HongKongPooey i believe both films will be taking place during the same time, so the most IM will cameo is just at the end of each film and thats it. IM is the best way to bridge GOTG to the MCU.

GotG being a standalone movie makes sense to me. I honestly wasn't expecting them to star in Avengers 2, but I do think they will participate at some point during the final battle with... Thanos?
MisterNiceGuy
MisterNiceGuy - 3/4/2013, 8:24 AM
@Lizard1, i felt the same way. Despite the obvious fictional aspects of CA i felt that it was the most grounded film of the MCU so far, and i hope it stays that way.

I'm all for the MCU going for more than 3 phases.

However, I don't think the studio should churn out more than 1 or 2 movies a year. Doing so would eventually lead to viewer fatigue. If they're smart, the studio will ease off the pedal every once in a while -- maybe even skip a year altogether -- before blitzing us with a run a great Marvel films.

I'd assume that new AVENGERS movies would continue to anchor and drive each phase. Imagine what the roster of the team will look like 10 years from now, after Our Gang has retired?

If they really do intend to just make 1 GOTG film i think Rocket Raccoons popularity will change their minds on that. He is undoubtedly going to be the fan favorite of the film. Hopefully Marvel doesnt take that as "WE NEED MORE RR IN EVERY COMIC" and start throwing in cameos all over the place.

I picture Rocket Raccoon acting and sounding alot like Ziggs from League of Legends. Now that i think about it he was probably the inspiration for that champion. If you do not know what i am talking about i suggest you google or youtube Ziggs

It cracks me up to see how excited everyone here is for GOTG and is already talking about how this movie is going to be a big success. I have faith in Marvel, but I seriously doubt this movie is going to be successful. I don't think it's going to get the general movie going population behind it. I have a feeling it will turn out a lot like Dredd, where it's a great movie but nobody went to see it in the theater but people like us.
