Ray Stevenson Talks THOR: THE DARK WORLD And ‘Volstagg’ Potentially Joining THE AVENGERS 2

Amid the premiere of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Red Carpet News TV caught up with English thespian Ray Stevenson as he talked excessively about his reprisal as Volstagg the Voluminous in Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World. Promising higher stakes for Asgard and Christopher Eccleston’s malevolent portrayal of Malekith the Accursed, Stevenson also comments on possibly joining The Avengers 2.

“Asgard's under great threat, I mean the biggest threat it's ever had. The worlds have been turned upside down, the stakes are a lot higher, it's a lot grittier and darker. It's gonna be a lot of fun! I saw Christopher Eccleston on set two or three times. The man is just a construement sort of, malevolent, dark force. He's under so much ...make-up that took hours and hours [to apply]. It takes a lot, but he's bringing something very very dark and special to it. There's always potential [for Volstagg to show up in The Avengers sequel]. There’s always room for a big guy in the end.”

Marvel Studios’ “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo & Anthony Hopkins as Odin, “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery” #83 in August, 1962. “Thor: The Dark World” is presented by Marvel Studios. The executive producers are Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Victoria Alonso, Craig Kyle and Nigel Gostelow. The film releases November 8, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios.

Btw we've gotta see some of thors power potential in this one, I'm not saying he was completely underpowered in the avengers (in my personal opinion I think he was holding back and reserved in some parts - I know joss said he was real mad nearing the end of his bout with iron man but honestly, I believe thor could be extremely pead off at someone and still be holding back from crushing their skull) but we gotta see some asgardian anger... Sure Odin son, use the hammer, do damage, and heaps of it.. But also put the hammer down and show the audience some of your other skills!

Ray Stevenson as Volstagg: the single worst thing in THOR. Great movie though.

Stevenson also says he would love to be Punisher again. Maybe Lungren would cameo in that movie too.

did what he could in Punisher : War Zone.
Bad movie. Hated that they where "inspired" by Ennis work on this one. Lots of carnage, nothing more.

Ennis Punisher just didn't worked for me.
(still love his take on Ghost Rider, though)

Shame. Lexi Alexander did Hooligans before that.
Then she went to Hollywood.
Did the Warzone.
That was the last time I heard anything about her.

he was good in Thor. The Whole Warrior Three thing just didn't worked. I wouldn't call them warriors, either. Just the bunch of adults in the costumes. Behaving like a bunch of kids.

Wouldn't mind seeing him as Punisher again at all. Having said that War Zone was an abomination.

@Godzillafart Yeah, it didn't really work trying to make him a fat guy with that plastic stomach armor.

Sef, Fandrol and Hogun fit in better. Stevenson looks like he's playing Halloween. It's not too distracting once you get used to it, but they could have gotten someone like the fat dude from Shawn of the Dead or something.

His best work is in The Other Guys, as he plays a sarcastic dickbag very well. I mean that as the highest compliment

WarZone had awesome action in it and the atmosphere was perfect.

If they make another one. They better keep those two and just make a hundred times better script and get a great Director behind it.

@peppy Yeah, you can't really say they didn't give you comicbook action with this one.

War Zone's violence reaches near comical proportions, but it doesn't pretend to be anything else. A perfect Punisher movie would be to mix the Drama and tone of Janes punisher with the sick scenes of War Zone. I like both versions and Stevenson is right off the page.

@NEO - "Stevenson is right off the page"

so very true. I love Jane's enthusiasm for the role, but In my opinion, Stevenson was exactly how I always read the punisher

Did anyone see Stevenson in Dexter? After seeing him in that series last season I think he'd make a kick-ass Cable in the X-men movies.

@Blackandyellow...This guy was amazing in Rome on hbo. I absolutely loved the range he had as a character. After watching Thor again this weekend, I really didn't think of him as a negative to the story, but he didn't really have much to work with and I kind of understand why. They had to introduce so much info and I feel like the warriors 3 got the short end of the stick. I did
However like his time on earth fighting the destroyer. He added some humor to that part of the movie.

I don't know who mentioned it above, but he would make a pretty bad-ass cable, just based on his work on HBOs Rome...

Volstagg sucks in Thor. The whole movie was kinda meh. I'm sure that the sequel will be better.
Stevenson is the best Punisher so far.

@SlaveMasterFlexXx
don't go harsh on Lexi. She did what she could. Lions Gate is no innocent bystander in this story.

Besides, even if over the top violence can look good on comic book pages, it doesn't mean it will look good on screen.
It was laughable.
Take away some real drama, throw in some cheesy lines and you got yourself WAR ZONE.

it may be entertaining, sure. but you gotta aim higher.
For me it wasn't Punisher we deserved.
