As revealed exactly one week ago, Academy Award-winning, veteran thespian Robert Redford is signing on for a role in Marvel Studios’ 2014 adaptation, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Without revealing specs about the role, reportedly a senior S.H.I.E.L.D. character named Pierce, the Sundance Kid actor confirmed the news to the L.A. Times and explained why he’s agreed to do it.

“I'm doing this film because it's different. It's a new thing for me,” he explained during a Q&A as part of the L.A. Times Indie Focus Screening Series “I like the idea of stepping into new territory. I'm excited by it. I also think it's a good bunch of people who really know what they're doing.”

Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where the highly anticipated “Marvel’s The Avengers” leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D., and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. Starring Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Toby Jones, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Maximiliano Hernández, Hayley Atwell, Scarlett Johansson with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed Anthony Russo & Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on Marvel’s classic super hero Captain America, who first appeared in the comic book “Captain America #1” in March, 1941. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is presented by Marvel Studios and produced by Kevin Feige and co-produced by Nate Moore. The executive producers are Louis D'Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Victoria Alonso and Michael Grillo. The film releases April 4, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel Studios will release “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

It's been rumored that he's playing a senior (pardon the pun) SHIELD agent. Possibly someone who'd rather be in the field than having Maria Hill's or Nick Fury's jobs.

Why isn't this on main? It's short, but it's still worth showing.

Whether he's a SHEILD agent or not, I reckon he'll be a relation or close friend of Tommy Lee Jones' character from The First Avenger....a present day character that Rogers can feel at home with, in this new world of his. Excited for this casting news!

What's cool about this is that it's going to make Evans more psyched about playing Cap ( since he seems not to care) and it could attract even better acting talent to the MCU.

I remember that male-bashing movie (I know, like, which one?) where he [frick]s Demi Moore for a million bucks to share with her hubby Woody Harilson, but ends up saying [frick]it, I can just keep [frick]ing the guy.

Old Nick Fury would be great. No way is he going to be just some guy Cap knew from WWII. He's not old enough. He's old but not that old haha.

AlbertPooholes is correct. All this, "he's an older Dum Dum!" or "He's going to be Nick Fury!" talk is retarded.

AlbertPooholes addressed the Dum Dum comment. As far as Nick Fury goes, forget it. Marvel isn't going to just throw away all the work they've done with SLJ in the previous movies AND comics.

He's going to be a senior member of SHIELD. Just accept that for what it is! He's going to be like Joseph Fiennes character in Skyfall.

@MARVELPSYCHO79 Yeah, I used to get dragged to those male-bashing ass films. If a woman cheated, the husband would always wait for her to finish [frick]ing the dude then take her back. If the man cheated, he would die.

As of this moment, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be the first Marvel production in which only one actor has been nominated for an academy award for acting. Redford has won for directing but only Sam J has an acting nom.

@Spidey91

Actually if you watch one of the deleted scenes from The Avengers where Cap is looking the files of his team from the war we see that Dugan is dead. The only one it showed still alive was Peggy carter.

I know most people will say if it was in a deleted scene it doesn't count but the only reason Joss didn't use this scene is because he felt it was a better fit Cap's solo movie. I hope they use it.

All I can think looking at Robert Redford's face under a Captain America banner is "if only he was thirty right now". Not that I dislike Chris Evans in the role, but damn... young Robert Redford as Cap would be just about perfect casting.

also forgot to add that Joss was nominated for an Oscar for Toy Story.

SWelch - what nuclearpriest is saying is that TWS will be the first Marvel Studios film where they will only have 1 actor with an oscar for acting.

all other movies have had more than 1 oscar for acting.

"Marvel isn't going to just throw away all the work they've done with SLJ in the previous movies AND comics."

So naive...

Like the work they did with Bana? Or Norton? Or Howard? In any case, nobody is saying he'd replace SLJ, just that he could be the ORIGINAL Fury (y'know, like he IS in the comics), and nothing we've seen in "all the work they've done with SLJ" would preclude that in the least. Best of both worlds...I'd dig it.

Doubt it, though. Better chance he could be the Red Skull...has Redford ever played a villain? If not, that would certainly constitute new territory...
Rowsdower
Rowsdower - 3/29/2013, 10:54 AM
Wouldn't be if he played the original Fury?

"That bald black dude stole my name!"
capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 3/29/2013, 10:55 AM
JohnnyKrpton - Let's say they do go the route of making him the "original" Nick Fury. Why would he still be in SHIELD? SLJ's Nick Fury is the top dog at SHIELD, why would the original Fury still be there and NOT be the top dog?

And Bana wasn't a Marvel Studios film so that doesn't count, as well Norton and Howard were 1 movie. SLJ has appeared in all MS films except THOR. There's more leg work there with SLJ than those previous 3 you mentioned.
capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 3/29/2013, 10:56 AM
Also, Marvel has gone so far as cementing SLJ as Fury, they've brought his look into the 616 universe.
capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 3/29/2013, 11:00 AM
Marvelpsycho - If you're referring to the comment about the oscars from NUCLEARPRIEST, he was saying this will be the first Marvel Studios film where there WON'T be more than 1 actor with an oscar for acting.

He knows that in all previous MS films there have been multiple oscar winners for acting.

He's not saying they don't ever hire oscar winning actors.
capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 3/29/2013, 11:01 AM
Good call on the that MarvelPsycho. I always forget it was RDJ.

Still, he has substantial leg work compared to the other 3 replaced names.

@SWelch

are you sure? because there was the Howard Stark file, the Jacques Dernier file, and the Peggy file, I didn't see the Dum Dum file.
JohnnyKrypton
JohnnyKrypton - 3/29/2013, 11:08 AM
Yep, but mainly glorified cameos. Those guys were the stars. IF SLJ decided to walk, Marvel wouldn't miss a step. Unlike the leads, SLJ hasn't brought anything unique to the table other than looking like Ultimate Fury. Rachel Dawes was a much bigger part of the Batfilms and they swapped her out...

Still, don't misunderstand me. I'm not calling for his replacement, just saying that 1. Marvel's done it before with way more important parts and 2. there's no reason Redford couldn't be orriginal Nick, should Marvel be so inclined. But again, I doubt it.
