Adan Canto Joins X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST; Will He Play Sunfire Or Sunspot?

A new addition to the cast of Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past film has seemingly been outed as The Following alum Adan Canto, who took to Twitter to announce the news and hint at his character.

With filming in full swing in Montreal, Canada, X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer and stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Shawn Ashmore recently attended a hockey game in town. During the NHL event, Mexican actor Adan Canto, who’s best known for his role on Fox’s The Following drama series, took to Twitter to announce that he’s joining the mutant ensemble cast.

“Thrilled to be X-Men,” Adan Canto tweeted, including Twitter handles of Singer, Stewart, McKellen and Ashmore, as well as the hashtag #daysoffuturepast. Two weeks prior to that tweet, Canto teased, “I might turn into a ball of fire if someone pisses me off,” in response to another user of the social network requesting hints for his (then) mystery project. If Days of Future Past is the project in question, Adan Canto could be playing the Brazilian mutant Roberto da Costa, aka Sunspot, or perhaps an alteration of Japanese mutant Shiro Yoshida, Sunfire. What do you think?

X-Men: Days of Future Past reunites Adan Canto with his The Following castmate, Shawn Ashmore. Also starring Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Nicholas Hoult, Omar Sy, Peter Dinklage, Halle Berry, Fan Bingbing, Anna Paquin, Daniel Cudmore, Ellen Page & Booboo Stewart, the “inbetweenquel” releases July 18, 2014!

ball of fire? Well, it can't be Sunfire, I mean Sunfire is Japanese as hell. House of the Rising Sun...fire. C'mon with that. I can't see him as Cannonball either.

Could be Sunspot. He was in the Singer version of the First Class script, before Vaughn and Goldman cut him out.

There's only one problem. Sunspot doesn't turn into a giant ball of fire...

Dude's always depicted with a fiery aura. How else do you think they'd translate that to the screen unless with a fire effect?

Agreed. Totally has to be Sunspot. You know they will be introducing a New Mutant or two if they plan on moving ahead with the rumored New Mutants spinoff.

Sunspot has a temper too, right? So his comment about being pissed off applies.

Yes! Have been longing to see Sunspot on the big screen since the first X-Men film. Hope they do the character justice and don't cheap put out on the effects. (Makes more sense that it be Sunspot as opposed to Sunfire, or maybe a combination of the two?)

Well if a lot of people have the same opinion (jack the giant slayer) then it can't be ignored.

I'm not convinced Singer understands what is needed to get the best out of a comic book character in film. Judging by his xmen films and superman returns his version of the characters lack gravity or passion. It will be interesting to if his directing style has changed in DOFP because it needs to.

obviously he aint Sunfire due to the fact that he's japanese. has to be Sunspot.

Sunspot! Wait, he was the one in X-Men legends 2 as a playable character, right?

I prefer Sunfire and Thunderbird joining X-Men in 70's, but Sunspot can be too, but better in future, not in 70's.
Talked about ball of fire, maybe he meant spots of fire.

Great adittion!! and surprise. I love The Following and he has a great role and arc.

This cast is soo diverse and international: a black french actor, a big chinese actress, a native-american looking young actor, now a mexican one...

Great move, Singer and crew! I approve

too many mutants in this film,we're gonna need a lot of sentinels to do a mass cull.

Psylocke was in X3, so won't be in 70's and as telepath definitely not in Sentinels world, she's dead.

Definitely Sunspot. I mean that character is some sort of latino, I mean he's Latino, Sunspot is Latino. He could be playing Sunfire..since I guess Latinos and Asians are the same...(I'm Asian, so that's not racism, more like sarcasm).

The first X Men is a great film and people seem to just think he had nothing to do with first class just because he wasn't the director.

Read Singers comments on First Class. Despite not being director, he was very much actively involved with much of it.

Joss Whedons Batman script was complete shit. These directors don't do well with other properties. Singer has already proven himself with x men and I have faith in him.

"I'm might turn into a ball of fire...." Lol...alert, that was really a message for his ex-boyfriend..."OMG, like, I will turn into a ball of firrrr!"

Please report me, I want to be on Hall of Shame just once...:) Happy Sunday!

Oh on a serious note though...I was very disappointed that Singer got the old cast involved in this film. First Class made me very hopeful for the franchise, who cares if they were not the Wolverine, Storm and Jean Grey? I liked the characters...and I always assumed it was good because Singer didnt have his hands on it...I know people have said that Singer was involved in First Class, but when I was announced that he was taking over the sequel a little part of me died...especially when it was said that both Magnetos would share this movie...ugh...I like First Class Magneto, that dude was ferocious and much more sinister because you knew where he was coming from.

Well Sunfire's Japanese and Sunspot's Latino and this guy seems to have a little Latino heritage, so I would go for the latter.
Although Sunfire was in the original X-Men (not the first five of course) so it would make sense that he be a part of the first class era X-Men.

Loved Adan on The Following!
Speaking of The Following ... doesn't Adan and the other two (Valorie Currie and Nico Tortorella) totally remind you of:

Sunspot, Wolfsbane and Cannonball! <3
