UPDATE: Sarah Gadon Is Mary Jane? Actress Confirms Joining THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Franchise

Despite earlier rumors being debunked that the Canadian actress was Sony's new Mary Jane Watson, Sarah Gadon has confirmed herself that she is in fact joining The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

Following word that actress Shailene Woodley had been cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and would instead appear in the third installment, rumors surfaced earlier today that Canadian actress Sarah Gadon would replace Woodley as Mary Jane Watson. While reliable sources supposedly debunked that rumor, Gadon has proclaimed the rumor to true to a certain extent. The Cosmopolis star has informed Entertainment Tonight Canada that she is in fact joining the Marc Webb-directed Sony/Marvel franchise, but she doesn't reveal who she's playing. In “The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2,” for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, with a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, and based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are the producers. The latest chapter in the Spider-Man story is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014.

Hey TheDIsSilent, I was the one of the few that defended Woodley. Was she my first pick? No but at the same time I didn't care for TASM2 and I feel everyone deserves at least one shot and we should say no to her yet.

Fanboys don't even give someone a shot before they criticize. Smh.

I feel bad for Woodley because its HIGHLY likely she knows what was said on this site. Hundreds of people work on a movie and your telling me none know ComicBookMovie.com or check it? Doubt it especially since Josh interviewed Webb and Emma says she checks it.

A damn shame but at the same time a negative could be a positive.

She will be in her own movie series and not be a part of this cluster[frick] series.

It seems as if you guys missed the news. This casting is not for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It's for the third movie and beyond. Mary-Jane will not be in the second movie any longer. Also the recasting was due to scheduling conflicts with Woodley's upcoming franchise Divergent. So you can all calm the **** down.

Anyone else think they're going to do reshoots for ASM2 with this new actress? I know they said they took Woodley's scenes out, but this casting news is so sudden (within 24 hours) so maybe they're doing last minute reshoots at the end of filming with her. Maybe MJ will be in the film after all (still seems too congested regardless)

It's all about when they film, sometimes things work out better than others. Having to work around two franchises with Woodley could have been extremely stressful and hard to do, especially when it's a vital character like MJ. Now there are cases like Lawrence where it works out (barely). Part of that working out could be attributed to the fact that both of her franchises are different studios, both of which have different release windows. It all comes down to scheduling, and it's perfectly believable that is the reason, or at least plays a role in the decision.

I think they'll all be great but I think (regardless of box office success) Cap 2 will be the best of the three April/May 2014 cbm releases.

Well, if you look back on Cavill's history of auditioning for films, he could have been Edward Cullen and in Superman Returns. But they turned him down, but now look at him, he played in Man of [frick]ing Steel. Good things come to the people that wait. Everything happens for a reason.

But Webb, next time you decide to do a movie, make up your damn mind of who's going to play who, it can really hurt someone if you don't, especially when you filmed about one or two scenes with them in the film.

Divergent comes out next year and they're currently filming it. The Amazing Spider 3 has already got a date secured for 2016, so they'll most likely film between late 2014 and 2015. Woodley's got no upcoming movies schuduled for 2016, so why isn't she coming back for the third film, why recast and not just keep her on for the third film.
