Marvel Co-President Talks Future One-Shots And Reveals Scrapped Short Film Ideas

Wakanda, a young Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan and an orange were once integrated for a short film, according to Agent Carter director Louis D’Esposito; more from the Marvel co-president after the jump!

When ScreenCrush talked with Louis D’Esposito, Marvel Studios' co-president and director of the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray one-shot, Agent Carter, the producer discusses future short films and even reveals ideas for shorts that have been developed, but presumably canned. "Yes, the ‘One Shot’ development process is a little different than the features, obviously," said D’Esposito after being asked if he's already plotted one-shots for the Thor and Captain America sequels. "With the features we set it, and everything is going towards that." But does he have the 2015 short planned? "We’ve developed a lot of shorts because Eric Pearson, the writer on all them, he was part of our writer’s program and now he’s a great friend of the family. We developed a lot of shorts with him over the years, so we have some crazy ideas that happen in Asgard, and some characters done in their youth. We were developing a story about young Nick Fury going with Dum Dum Dugan to Wakanda, and they’re sitting on a plane and Dum Dum is sitting next to Nick Fury eating an orange, and the orange squirts him in the eye, and maybe that’s the reason he has an eye patch. Maybe that’s the start. It really burns, so maybe he put some tape on it." Louis D’Esposito continued, " The story he doesn’t want to tell is that it happened because of Dum Dum’s orange (laughs). Obviously we shelved that." Regarding when he'll start shooting the short for Thor: The Dark World's eventual home release, the producer says, "Soon, we usually start the process six months before [the Blu-ray release]." D’Esposito also says that despite seeing these short films as audition pieces for the feature films, "I try not to think about that, but I’ve had so much fun doing these, Kevin [Feige] and I have certainly discussed the potential for doing that." For the full Q&A, head over to ScreenCrush. What do you think?

agent carter is the best one shot so far.

as for nick fury losing an eye,i believe wolverine did it in the ultimate universe,i think it would be pretty cool if they said the black panther did it in the marvel cinematic universe.

Do we need to know why Nick lost an eye? Prefer to keep it as a mystery.

I'd much rather see young Nick losing his eye in a bad ass fight scene.

I think the idea of Dum Dums orange hitting Fury's eye wouldve been a funny easter egg that something serious later on would happen to it, even have Dugan mention something like ' Dont worry Nick, its not like its the worst thing that could happen to ur eye " ...LoL

Black Panther is just a matter of time. And I think sooner rather then later. Marvel is going to make it up to the fan boys for IM3 (I liked most of that movie).

What's so "bad ass" about a "flight" to Wakanda? It's not like they're going to give ole Panther any screen time soon...smh :(

And let me get this straight... a [frick]ing orange???!! GTFOH I'm not settling for that ish! I know he said "it's a start" so possibly that was a nod to the future eye injury he would encounter later. I could honestly care less how Fury got the patch just give us some build up to Black Panther please.

And before anyone says "It's coming!" I'll wait until marvel officially confirms it. Because of right now it's supposed to be "a hard film to pull off".

I think the reason why we haven't seen a Black Panther movie is because he's to similar to Batman visually. It sounds like BS but the politics on how comic book movies are made is the REAL BS.

@WruceBayne Dare Devil is similar to Batman visually but that didn't stop him from getting a movie made.

Agent Carter and all of the one-shots (except item 42) were really good. But Agent Carter was the best of the bunch. Also that ending on Agent Carter... well it brought more questions and i think will be important in the coming movies.

@YouDontKnowMe there's "The Consultant" and "On the Way to Thor's Hammer"

Tainted87 - 9/16/2013, 9:25 PM
I obviously haven't seen it yet, but wouldn't it be awesome if the Agent Carter one-shot was shown right before The Winter Soldier? Like the way Sin City began with "the Customer is Always Right"...

I guess the only danger would be that it might conflict tonally, which is really what any prologue sequence is meant to do - set the tone.

I'd like to see a Wakanda one. And not INSIDE Wakanda, but a more plausible one, like a found footage movie. You've got a bunch of teenagers messing around, and they're "tracking" some native-looking guy or girl on the plains. Then they get caught in some trap, one of the teenagers gets badly injured, and when they get free, all but one decide to go back. The guy with the camera eventually finds Wakanda's walls, but gets knocked unconscious by the native we saw earlier. And then he smashes the camera.

Introducing characters was absolutely one of their ideas to begin with, but one of the posts here in the last few months covered that with an interview by Kevin Feige. He said they didn't have enough time and money to put into the look and casting of a character for such a small project. It makes sense, but it is unfortunate.

How's about we revisit General Ross, Blonsky or Sterns sometime?

I really liked the impression given of SHIELD in TIH and Iron Man and the implications of that Tony Stark scene. Too bad they took it in a different direction, it worked out well, but imagine if they'd continued with that.

Personally, I hate "A funny thing happened...". Give us a one shot that has absolutely nothing to do with SHIELD agents for once
