More GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Tidbits; Nova Corps, Nebula/Gamora, Bradley Cooper

With just a week of filming left to go, director James Gunn (barely) comments on Bradley Cooper's Rocket Raccoon, as Karen Gillan teases her relationship to Gamora & I analyse the Nova Corps ranks!

By DCMarvelFreshman - Oct 06, 2013 09:10 AM EST

A little over a month has passed since The Hangover star Bradley Cooper was announced as the voice behind Rocket Raccoon, who's been described as the “heart” of Guardians of the Galaxy. It was assumed the Oscar-nominated actor's contribution would come into play in post-production, which the Marvel film is just a week shy of entering, but director James Gunn has clarified that “Yes, [Bradley has already started work on Guardians]. He's awesome,” via his Formspring.

Meanwhile, Karen Gillan has talked more about playing Nebula with The Scotsman and hinted at the character's relationship with Zoe Saldana's Gamora and Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy. “She’s bald in the novels, Zoe’s character has hair. So their look was predefined and my hair had to go,” says the Scottish actress of being the only one required to shave her head daily. “Not very much [I can reveal], I’m afraid. It’s all very hush-hush. But I do have a lot of sibling rivalry with Zoe's Gamora” Gamora is Thanos' adopted daughter in Guardians, but Nebula claims to be the Mad Titan's granddaughter in the comics. We'll finally get a catfight in a Marvel Studios film!

With Glenn Close playing Nova Prime, the “chief police of the galaxy,” and John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, it's no secret that the Nova Corps will play a major role in Guardians of the Galaxy. But while the task force is exceptionally powerful in the comics, some Nova Corpsmen in the film were spotted at San Diego Comic-Con and during filming in London; appearing that Marvel has minimized their abilities in the film to make the Guardians more superior. That may not be the case.

Like any police/military force, the Marvel Comics had different ranks within the Nova Corps - there's the Nova Corpsman, Millenian, Denarian and Centurion. And based on some things I've stumbled across, those rankings will play out in Guardians of the Galaxy. An actor named Ian James Seale has listed “Denarian” as his role in the James Gunn-directed movie. How distinctive these ranks will be in the movie remains to be seen, but their emblematic variation has been glimpsed via set photos.

“Guardians of the Galaxy,” the next epic adventure from Marvel Studios, is directed by James Gunn from his screenplay, with a story by Nicole Perlman and Gunn, and the film will introduce audiences to a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The all-star cast includes Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, two-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Academy Award® winner Benicio del Toro as The Collector, Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, and six-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close as Nova Prime. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is slated for August 1, 2014!

Well, I guess this means that Sam Alexander or Richard Rider won't be in the movie.

@OldGreg

I'm guessing you didn't read the article. There are different ranks of officers in the Nova Corps, those soldiers we seen are low ranking guards.

Not feeling the Nova Corps suits. At all.

Got to see it in live action. Thor got a lot of complaints about his suit until they saw it in the actual movie.

I have high hopes for this movie. Glenn Close as Nova Prime... intriguingly awesome. The cast for this movie is a diverse mix of amazing actors and actresses that could really turn in great performances if warranted. I know it's not exactly a "small" production (no Marvel film could be at this point I don't think) but I'm pulling for it as a dark horse if the film is turns out good.

I think post production the corps suits will look fine. I remember how crap Judge Dredds helmet looked in photos, but once I saw it on screen it looked perfect.

If they could make the suits a bit more practical on film, it could work.

But the ones in GOTG look too generic.

The Nova Corps suits we're seeing wont be used for Nova if he ever gets a little screen time They'll give him something leaner.

Shut the [frick] up mantinium.

See those suits?

I'd glady take a shit on one and throw it in Gunn's face.

If Close is wearing something like that as Nova Prime I will be so pissed.

IF Gunn has at least made Denarians and Centurions capable of energy blasting and the Centurions better be capable of flight. The suits we've seen have wrist blasters, typical of Corpsemen and Milennians.

Gunn, you better not have [frick]ed my corps!

They all look like Corpsmen with different insignias! They all have wrist blasters! Why? If they upgrade the Corps later, fine by me, but if this is permanent... I don't even know, I'd probably protest.

No. I also would love to have Cosmo on the movie, but it's probably too early.

@ckal - I don't want to see Adam Warlock in this movie. I'm still hoping Marvel does a straight adaptation of Starlin's initial run on the character from "Strange Tales" and "Warlock."

Hmmm...

Some people seem to have forgotten that the film's tile is "The Guardians of the Galaxy" and not "The Nova Corps".

The Nova Corps aren't the focus of this movie, folks!
