Ed Brubaker Talks Up CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER: "Best Movie Marvel Ever Made"

Though he's yet to see the film in its entirety, the comic writer behind the source material for Captain America: The Winter Soldier insists it will be Marvel's best yet and it'll do big box office numbers.

Both Bleeding Cool and IGN sat down with Ed Brubaker at ImageEXPO to discuss his exclusive deal with Image Comics, but neither sites wrapped their interviews before asking the writer about the big-screen adaptation of his most celebrated comic book arc, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While he declared last year that it would be Marvel's best cinematic outing (judging by its script), he's still singing that same tune. “It's the best movie that Marvel has ever made,” he told IGN. “The stuff I've seen from it, it also has two of the best fight scenes that I've ever seen on film... It's going to be amazing. It's gonna make a billion dollars. I got to go and be on set for awhile and watch them film and stuff. It was just amazing. I couldn't be happier with how it came out. Yeah, I can't wait for the premiere. I hope to get to actually talk to Robert Redford at it -- I got to shake his hand, but I didn't get to actually talk to him. He's like an honorary Brubaker, because my whole life people have come up to me like, 'Oh, like the Robert Redford movie!'”

During his interview with Bleeding Cool, Ed Brubaker talked Captain America: The Winter Soldier lengthily when they asked for his thoughts on seeing his work adapted to the big-screen. “I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say yet, but what I will say is that with everything I’ve seen and the script that I’ve read: It’s the best movie that they’ve ever made,” he reiterated. “I was blown away, being on the set and getting to meet Redford and watching them do this stuff. The movie isn’t a scene-for-scene adaptation of the comic by any means but there is a lot of the comic in the movie. There’s certain moments in the movie where I’m just, 'Shit, that’s what I wrote.' I’m really thrilled about it, I could not be happier, honestly. It came out so good.”

“Thank god it has the same name as the book and Marvel is putting out that nice deluxe hardback which hopefully the bookstores will realize that’s the one to push on people. I’m hopeful that this is their new model because say what you will about the Watchmen movie, but they sold a million copies of Watchmen. (And I liked the movie.) I’m thrilled, I couldn’t be happier. I can’t wait for the premiere, to see the final cut of it with all the special effects and everything. I’m hoping to go visit the Russos when I get back down to L.A. and see some more stuff. Everybody there has been amazingly supportive and I’ve become friends with the screenwriters, so it’s really great. Actually where I live — I have a house in L.A. and a house in Seattle — our L.A. house is walking distance to Marvel now... they moved to the Disney lot, so it’s kind of crazy. I’ll walk over and look at stuff if they’ll let me. I have found a way to get into the Disney lot without ID. (No, no I haven’t.) Or an appointment! (I wish.)”

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy — the Winter Soldier. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014.

I am very worried about Falcon. He looks like he's going to turn out to be another Angel (from Last Stand). Even Anthony Russo said at Comic-Con that the original script only had 5% of Falcon, but when Mackie was cast, it rocketed up to 90% or something. Who knows how much time they spent trying to fit him into the story.

The MOST anticipation I've had YET for a Marvel Studios film (other than 'Iron Man 2' and I'm STILL getting 'Butthurt Checks from the Govt. for THAT one)....but you'll have to PROVE to me "the two best fight scenes in a film"...and....

I'll just wait for the movie and give my opinion THEN. Is that too much to ask?

I can't wait. Love the comic story. They better make Winter Soldier a badass and not limit what he can do. I want him to outmatch Rogers in fighting this movie so that he can go back to the basics. Strategy. That's all I want.

Can't wait! can't believe how close we're getting!!

I wish they would release this at my IMAX theater. My real one. Not that fake one inside my AMC theater.

I refuse to see this in 3D. It's been giving me headaches lately and a lot of eye strain after the movie.

Nice, now I'm even more excited for this movie. I don´t think it will make 1 billion though, but if it does it will be a great achievement for Marvel.

Hopeful, but I'm not going to get too hyped. Winter Soldier is a great story andI respect Brubaker, but he's biased. First, as the writer of Winter Soldier, he's bound to have a lot of love for his own story. Second, I think most comic book writers would be thrilled to see a story of their's brought to life like this. Between the pride and the excitement, I think Brubaker is a little too close to this for us to take his word as a guarantee that the movie is going to be amazing.
