RUMOR: A GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Sequel In 2016

Captain America: The Winter Soldier doesn't appear to be the only 2014 Phase Two movie that Marvel Studios is confident in as the latest rumor is that a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel has been dated.

Though we've yet to learn officially which Marvel character(s) will follow Ant-Man on the Phase 3 lineup of Marvel's Cinematic Universe, there have been rumblings of Doctor Strange and, more recently, third installments to both Thor and Captain America franchises. However, it seems to be neither, according to Joblo's "reliable" sources: "...the film currently on slate for the May 6, 2016 date is Guardians of the Galaxy 2." The site goes on to "confirm" a Comic Book Movie scoop that an animated series based on the intergalactic superhero team is also in-development for a Fall 2015-Disney XD debut and it would "segue" with the live-action Guardians of the Galaxy 2. If true, giving the James Gunn-directed adaptation a sequel as early as 2016—and on the same day that Warner Bros. will unleash their Batman/Superman movie—should be a good indication that Marvel/Disney is pretty confident in the film. However, the same could be (and has been) said for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which also has a sequel in the works as aforementioned. Nonetheless, Joblo further advises that we should take this as a rumor, but expect announcements from the horse's mouth in the coming months or closer to San Diego Comic-Con. What do you think?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

Most excited for Cap 3 in Phase 3. Guardians feels like it should just be a one film deal. Then again, Adam Warlock. Doctor Strange I still say will be in Phase Three cause he plays a big part in the storyline. Thor 3 needs to be the last film in Phase Three to tie up loose ends from Avengers between Loki and Thanks.

Give me Doctor Strange, not another sequel, marvel sequels have not been good so far, cap may change that but so far marvel studio sequels have ranged from mediocre (iron man 2 and 3) to so awful i want to barf (thor 2)

I'm thinking: Ant Man, GoTG2, Thor3, Cap 3, Doctor Strange, Black Panther.

I wish they'd push Avengers 3 back only slightly further to also give us room for a Hulk sequel.

According to the article, this film would be landing in May 6 2016 and compete directly with BvS. Man, Marvel is like that crazy gambler that says "If we're gonna do it, let's do it. I'm all in."
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 2/6/2014, 9:30 AM
LOL, the raccoon squad will go up against BvS. I'm not sure if any studio can come out of this as a winner.

And seriously WB, Marvel gets 2 movie with raccoon in it by the time you get one movie up and ready?
LMB10
LMB10 - 2/6/2014, 9:31 AM
I expect Marvel will move the date forward by two or three weeks. No matter the odd casting choices, BvS will be huge.

My understanding is that they may not do a Hulk sequel because the Avengers movies kind of act as his, unless they really do go the planet Hulk route and banish him after A2. In phase one they had 6 movies including A1, phase two will have five including A2, so maybe they will do 6 again for phase three.

Ant Man
Doctor Strange
Thor 3
Cap 3
GotG 2
Avengers 3

Did Marvel say there would be 2 films a year, one new and one sequel?

If so, this makes sense.

2014: Early - Cap 2, Late - GotG,
2015: Early - Avengers AoU, Late - Ant-Man

The second film of 2016 is probably gonna be a new character, so we might still get Doc Strange/Black Panther if they follow this pattern.

If true then Dr strange must be coming out later that summer
marvelstudios
marvelstudios - 2/6/2014, 9:36 AM
Phase 3 will probably look like:

2015: Ant Man
2016: Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange
2017: Thor 3, Captain America 3
2018: (something), Avengers 3

I'm hope that something is Ms. Marvel.
NightForce
NightForce - 2/6/2014, 9:41 AM
Damn, I'd wait and see if GOTG is a success before confirming a sequel.
EdgyOutsider
EdgyOutsider - 2/6/2014, 9:43 AM
Phase Three ideally for me is

Ant-Man
Captain America 3
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (inputting this here in case it does get a sequel, plus Adam Warlock appearance likely in sequel)
Doctor Strange
Black Panther
Thor 3
Avengers 3.

Initially it was all of the above minus GOTG 2 but, it makes sense especially if Warlock is to be introduced and thrown into the mix. Thor 3 must lead into Avengers 3.

Marvel should promote the shit out of this film already, looks pretty cool from what I see, but need loads of promotion.

May 2018 date is already booked by Sony for TASM3. But maybe they will release Avengers3 in late May or early June...
JoJo1982
JoJo1982 - 2/6/2014, 9:49 AM
Yeah GotG 2 has to be a set up for Adam Warlock, so he can help take down Thanos in Avengers 3

I just hope they move its release date... May is too crowded with superhero movies
This, batman vs superman, xmen apocalypse, and amazing Spidey 3 in June

@spiderparker

Since Sony and Marvel Studio have a good relationship I'm one of them is going to move away from the other
marvel72
marvel72 - 2/6/2014, 9:53 AM
i can't see marvel moving forward with guardians of the galaxy 2 without waiting to see how much money guardians of the galaxy makes first.

i want marvel studios to keep that release date,i want to see how well a movie whatever it may be from them can compete with "BATMAN! man of steel 2".

it should of happened next year with avengers age of ultron but we all know what happened there.

BaneSmash - 2/6/2014, 9:54 AM
The only way Marvel is making a sequal if GOTG is succeful.............. GL 2 was also suppose to happen before its release.
BaneSmash
BaneSmash - 2/6/2014, 9:56 AM
Most likely Marvel will move any movie it had in the May 6 spot. It's not a win win for either studio.
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 2/6/2014, 9:58 AM
@Jojo
I dont think Marvel will pull a dick move like WB and ask Sony to move their date and ruin their good relation so its just Marvel will have to come up with some other date.
