Reuniting Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning one last time in anticipation of Guardians of the Galaxy and in favor of director James Gunn, the duo has contrived a two-part comic book prelude that leads up to events in the summer Marvel space epic. While issue #2 follows Rocket Raccoon and Groot before they joined the team, the debut issue "is pretty much an origin, or at least background, story for Nebula (played by Karen Gillan in the movie), which reveals details of her upbringing and training," reveals Abnett. "This features Gamora and Thanos, and is packed full of action too. It’s a chance for fans to know a little bit more about Nebula prior to the film’s release."

"James [Gunn], who was keen for us to write the Cinematic comics, was kind enough to invite us for two set visits during the making of the movie and made it clear that the movie’s key inspiration was our run on the Guardians of the Galaxy comic series," continued Dan Abnett. "I talked to James at some length about the sort of things he wanted to see and the sort of aspects of the film and its characters that might most usefully be supported with comic stories. James is a really great, compelling, enthusiastic and creative person. Watching him work on set was inspiring, and he was clearly very engaged with the material and determined to do it justice. I enjoyed writing stories with our conversations in mind." Head to Newsarama for more.

Marvel’s two-part Guardians of the Galaxy comic prequel comes out on April 2. What do you think?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

The DnA run of GOTG is great! Nice to see that it was the main inspiration for the movie!

@DaVinci

Annihilation: Conquest is where the team began. Then you have the 2008 GotG run that continues their story (I believe there are 4 trades.)

Art looks pretty good..need to read up on Nebula.

The 2008 series is a good jumping-on point, but it's too bogged down by too many event crossovers and ended prematurely. Better to start with the Marvel Now relaunch. Bendis totally owns that series.

@DaVinci
I'd start with Annihilation (doesnt have GOTG as a group but the individuals have roles), followed by Annihilation: Conquest and GotG (2008).

Such epic stories... I think I'll re-read them right now!

i agree with Staryeeszustheneonkid, read annihilation conquest it's good, with ultron being the primary villian of avengers 2 there is the slim possibility of us seeing annihilation conquest in GOTG 2 no matter how slim it is id still love to see that happen.

They seriously need to find better artists to do these prequel comics.

Okay, this is cool, I'll be picking it up.

ANYWAYS, What happened to the Winter Soldier tie-in?! Was there only 1 issue?! And was it only available online?

I never really liked this idea of having comic book tie-ins to comic book movies.

@Thecondor Yes, I know. Same with games. Cause they never are "official". The TASM game was the farthest thing from canon. But the Avengers tie-in was good, as was Black Widows. The Iron Man 3 was very... Well it just explained where Rhodey was during the battle for New York. The Dark World was great and I have yet to read the Winter Soldier cause they won't [frick]ing release it on the stands. This looks okay too. But I get what you're saying, if it's not in the movie, then why make it? The only tie-in I've ever believed is the Captain America: Super Soldier video game. And that's cause in the 1st Avenger, they montaged his adventures, smart move.

@Gambit Ya, but I wouldn't mind so much if they were random unimportant stories that didn't matter to the MCU over all, but when significant details are left out and can only be explained by going back to a comic, it just drives me mad.

Thecondor14 - 3/18/2014, 9:25 AM
Also it's like saying "look here's your favorite comic book character who's been translated from comics to live action movies then translated back to comics. " I'm just like what?

If you want to catch up on the comics real quick , there's some sort of GotG omnibus set for release in the next few months -- not surprising since they took the original trades out of print not too long ago.

All the DnA comics are available for digital download on Comixology too.

Thecondor14 - 3/18/2014, 9:30 AM
It defeats the purpose of the universe being cinematic. Sorry for the rant
TelaVizion
TelaVizion - 3/18/2014, 9:32 AM
The Winter soldier was only that 1 issue and all it was was Cap and Crossbones on a mission together (I think Widow was there too). This mission kinda takes place right before the movie starts. It's also the lead-in to Cap realizing he can't trust SHIELD.

@Gambit TWS tie in was an infinite comic that's why it was only released online. They were also going to release Captain America: Homecoming but I haven't heard anything about this...

TWS tie in was about Cap..widow and Brock/crossbones traking down the Zodiac formula

Might add, the infinite comic is supposed to come out with the collectors edition in an actual book (not just digital)much like the Agents of shield ones did with phil coulson fury and widow.

DnA GOTG run is awesome. The only problems are that it was too short and had too many tie-ins.

Annihilation Prologue, Nova 1-4 (Amazing) and Annihilation 1-6 were great!!

Annihilation: Conquest Prologue, Star-Load 1-4 (pieces together the GOTG team) and Conquest 1-6 were also great!!

i agree with @Gamester76, this story has to many crossovers and ended early. You never really get a feel for the "team"

All of these stories piece together GOTG. If you like Nova (as I did) pick of Nova 1-36 before the Thanos books. Nova and GOTG 1-25 can be read together, same timeline. Nova by DnA was excellent!!!

I'm picking up The Thanos Imperative comics soon, I hope they're good.
