Disney CEO Won't Get Cocky Over Early STAR WARS: THE FORCES AWAKENS Box Office Estimates

Jurassic World may have smashed box office records, but recent estimates have Star Wars: The Force Awakens pegged to top the box office in 2015. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger has warned fans not to get carried away by the early predictions. Read on for more!

Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger channeled Han Solo yesterday when he warned people not to get cocky over early box office estimates for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In June, Morgan Stanley predicted a domestic haul of $650-750 million and $1.3-1.5 billion overseas, potentially culminating in a combined $2.25 billion at the global box office. Many had wondered whether the blockbuster sequel could challenge James Cameron's reign at the top of the all-time box office statistics. This estimate would place The Force Awakens ahead of Titanic in second place (but still over $500 million behind the overwhelmingly successful Avatar).

However, with the movie still four months away, Iger was quick to temper the rising expectations. "We know there is just incredible interest in this film. We put two teaser trailers out, and the response has just been enormous," he began, "That said, as enthusiastic as we are for what we know of the film, we have not seen a Star Wars film since 2005. And there are markets around the world that are less familiar with Star Wars than, say, the United States, for instance."

Iger insisted that while the fans' love for Star Wars was, in his words, "rather apparent", they didn't want to get ahead themselves with estimates and predictions. "We're making, at this point, no estimate whatsoever in terms of what we believe the film will do," he stated. However, he did acknowledge that it's probably "the most valuable film franchise that ever existed", before adding, "We fully expect the success of this film will reverberate throughout the company, not only in 2016 but in the years beyond, because we obviously have a rich slate of Star Wars films coming."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theatres December 18, 2015.

The last SW movie made 850 million. They are really reaching and hoping with this 2.25 billion prediction.

@GentlemanlyBatman

Discounting the Rouge One movie, which i do think sound intresting, i have to agree that the Anthologymovies sounds just like a lazy cashgrab (even do all movies are that)

It's [frick]ing star wars Disney needs to get cocky or in other words realistic with the predictions.

There's no doubt that it'll make a tone of money.

I can't wait to see this movie.

Someone reputable projected that much? Wow. I thought 1.5 billion would be great. But since I fully expect it to be the best Star Wars movie yet then maybe just maybe.

Cash-grab movies a.k.a. movies that people really want to see and are willing to pay money to do so. What a terrible concept!

I used to be a huge Star Wars fan, but somehow my enthusiasm for the property has very much cooled down over the last 10 years. I'm now slowly starting to get somehwat interested in Episode VII, but I wouldn't say I'm hyped in any way.

And sorry, the anthology movies are still way lower on my anticipation ranking than that. The concept itself is sound, but not all the actual projects are imo. Rogue One, for what little I actually know about it, sounds like one that has a reason to exist. Something dealing with a young Han Solo on the other hand sounds like a terrible idea to me.

All in all I hope that they don't manage to haste from the property's anticipated return to form with Episode VII straight to a kind of Star Wars fatigue over the next few years.

It could beat Jurassic World but I don't see it beating Titanic.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the Star Wars films? I've seen two of the last three but they bore me to death.

We can't really go off of what the last Star Wars film made in the box office because the last one was part of that terrible prequel trilogy. This film is the first true continuation of the story in 32 years. The original cast is back, JJ Abrams is the director, and Disney is the powerhouse company promoting it. Assuming that the film actually ends up being really good then it could very well make over 2 billion dollars.

I haven't seen the originals...don't think I'll watch this unless the appeal is more than just "space stuff".
