'Harley Quinn' Co-Creator Paul Dini Weighs In On The Character's Look In SUICIDE SQUAD

Harley Quinn made her memorable debut in Batman: The Animated Series 23 years ago this month. Her co-creator Paul Dini recently weighed in on Margot Robbie's take on the character in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. See what he thought after the jump!

It's been 23 years since Batman: The Animated Series writers Bruce Timm & Paul Dini created 'Harley Quinn', and she's since gone on to acheive huge mainstream popularity and feature across a wide range of different formats - culminating in her live-action debut in next year's Suicide Squad, when she'll be portrayed by Margot Robbie. Though while Harley's impish and mischievous personality has always endured, her appearance and costumes have evolved over the years.

Talking to the Shanlian On Batman podcast (h/t to Forbes), Dini weighed in on
Harley and The Joker's look in David Ayer's film. He described Jared Leto's Clown Prince Of Crime as a "decadent rockstar", before adding, "there's a little bit of a 'Sid and Nancy' feel to the Joker and Harley look, which I always felt would not be a bad look if they were in a live-action movie."

Despite this, Dini's aware a small minority of Batman: TAS fans may take a while to get used to the 'New 52' look. "I know it’s jarring to a lot of the people who love the classic Bruce Timm suit, I love it myself," he claimed, "But in that world [of the Suicide Squad movie], I just don’t see it happening. It’s a rougher, more street look. I think it works fine." Additionally, he called Robbie "a very wonderful actress" and revealed he was "very excited to see that interpretation of Harley."

You can head over to the Shanlian On Batman podcast to hear Dini's comments in full. In the meantime, what do you think of Harley's live-action look? Sound off below!

Suicide Squad will hit theatres 5 August, 2016.

The creator of Harley Quinn likes how she looks in SS. I guess we can let this argument finally die right?

....Who am I kidding.

She looks great, and I think Robbie is a great choice for Harley (since Brittany Murphy died). Her and Joker are really the only characters I'm familiar with in Suicide Squad, and they both look well done.

Her look is inspired by this.

Harleen Quinzel could be a Blondie fan in the movie and this might be only prototype version of her costume.

I see no issue with her Harley Quinn design. Sure it's not Batman: The Animated Series but she's played by Margot [frick]ing Robbie and they are even having the backstory where Harley worked at Arkham.

We have an amazing actress who's playing a character where her backstory and characterization are just like the comic and some are bitching about her design.....

GET. THE. [frick]. OVER. IT.

Characterization > costume design

I think her design is great and the only thing that worries me is Will Smith. I'm still going to see it opening weekend

She looks great and she's obviously Harley without having to be told she is. It's a shame anyone would have to explain her look in the context of this particular film. Live action BATMAN in all black is a greater deviation than Robbie's Harley.

Shet yo bitch ass up and start the movie.

What's he going to say? "It's shit and I want my creation back?" Didn't Chris Claremont praise X3? The point is, that the smart creators know that they don't win by going nuclear against the movie interpretations of their stuff.

And for the record, I like Dini and a lot of creators, but I don't take their word as law even about their own creations. George Lucas didn't really understand what made Star Wars great. The Wachowskis didn't really understand what made the Matrix great. Often times the best comic storylines for characters don't come from their creators, but from second or third generation writers.

So, in summation:

@sameoldthing
Robbie may be the only thing good about this movie I think.

Yeah, I've been resigned to that opinion for a while now. I had really high hopes for this movie before we started to get images and trailers. It could still turn out to be a good or even great movie, but everything about the aesthetic just rubs me the wrong way. I've actually shifted my eggs back into the Dawn of Justice basket, hoping that a new writer will fix what I didn't like about Man of Steel...

You mean #f*ckDowneyJr. He played a part in getting Howard removed. They asked Howard to take a pay cut so he's not the top billed in a supporting role, he declined, they fired him and gave his money to RDJ. And Howard claims RDJ dodged his calls for months.

I can not get into DC films lately. They are too grimdark and take themselves entirely too seriously for my liking. They are well made and crafted with intelligence, but the characters they represent so far are not the characters I enjoyed from DC, they are caricatures of their comic book selves. Cardboard cutouts pushed through a factory of politically correct molds that exchange classic or timeless concepts with whatever trendy fashion or philosophy they can manufacture.

Robbie looks that way because it's easy to over sexualize her image, tie her to a youth oriented musical development and then pretend she's so crazy that it's okay she wants to walk around and fight impractically in her underwear. It's a stupid idea, but it's not made for me, it's made for kids.
