SUICIDE SQUAD Is The "Comic Book Movie 2.0" According To Director David Ayer

Suicide Squad looks like it could steal the show in 2016, and a lot of that has to do with David Ayer. Speaking to Empire, the director had some strongly-worded thoughts on what makes his film so different from the standard superhero fare - calling it the "Comic Book Movie 2.0"!

This week, Empire released a fantastic cover story on DC's upcoming big screen adaptation of Suicide Squad. Featuring a ton of juicy details, and some beautiful one-sheet covers, it should get you even more excited about one of the most intriguing and unusual comic book movies of 2016. Indeed, it was a huge suprise when WB green lit the project in the first place - but, according to EP Charles Roven, their confidence came from director David Ayer.

"We'd just started shooting Batman v Superman, we were figuring out our path through the expanding DC Justice League universe," Roven explained, "Then David Ayer came and pitched his take on Suicide Squad. It had this darkness and edge, while still tonally in the zone of what we're trying to do with these movies. And it's impossible that you could get a big tentpole picture from pitch to start of principal photography and faster than we did."

Additonally, Ayer delivered a rather strong-worded explanation about what makes a property like Suicide Squad different from the standard superhero affair. "You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from f*cking Planet X, before it destroys the world with its ticking clock. And who the f*ck cares?" he claimed. "But
you do this story about struggle and isolation and people who have been shit on that suddenly get thrown this lifeline... that's not so bad... I like to think of this as the Comic Book Movie 2.0"

Ayer makes an interesting point about superhero movies and their routinely world-ending stakes. Age Of Ultron may have been guilty of this, but so was Man Of Steel, and it's also worth noting that one of best parts of Ant-Man was the way it changed things up and made the stakes more personal. Do you agree with what Ayer says? Sound off below!

Suicide Squad hits theatres August 5, 2016.

I love the fact that it was Ayer that proposed the movie to WB, and not WB trying to find a director to fit their vision. It gives me a lot of hope for this movie and makes me respect the hell out of the determination it took to get this going.

I understand where he is coming from but the SS is no Avengers. Not by a longshot and the box office will reflect that. Moviegoers want to see spectacle and that's what they expect. It's a common trope in CBM to have the hero/heroes face off against the big bad at the end.

Before anyone gets too salty, his critique can be applied to numerous CBM including MoS and TDKR.

If this movie didn't feature the Joker or Batman I'd agree. You'd be talking about a movie with a bunch of complete unknown characters.

@Jeight

But I'm sure what he's saying here is that the threat within his film is not as average and repetitive as those you mentioned but it will feel just as big despite its differences and smaller scale. Similar to a show like Daredevil if you will? I don't want to give away spoilers but I believe that the villain of this movie is more human than ever. lol

CBMs that fall into the 'world-ending' trope: Avengers 1&2, X-Men: DOFP/Apocalypse, BvS (?), Man Of Steel.

It's NOT a studio-specific thing. But it's nice when movies like Ant-Man & Suicide Squad change things up a bit.

Being a Marvel fanboy...I'm pretty excited for Suicide Squad. If Ayer doesn't have a taste for the MCU, then that's his own (just like every other similar article the pertains to the same shit).

But I feel like a lot of directors/actors/ect. Athat like to point out flaws in other films and bash them in the process...haven't actually seen all the movies or really figured out how they all connect and how each film is different from one another at the same time.

And I believe Ayer is a better person than to bicker about a competitor's film, but whatever.

While Marvel has done this, DC is going to be doing it also and has already done this with Man Of Steel. Lets not forget that BvS, Justice League Part 1 and Justice League Part 2 are all going to have this basic aspect happen.

Its just them insulting the very films they intend to make and have made prior.

i dont think its specific to age of ultron, most superhero movies that are big in scope have killer robots or aliens (and I dont mind) but this is def a different take to superhero movies.

"Believe it or not, he's actually talking about Transformers."

Think you're onto something...

"You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from f*cking Planet X."

"...before it destroys the world with its ticking clock."

"...And who the f*ck cares?"

Then again...

Ultron was partially supposed to be an alien robot who did end up having a time ticking machine that would basically thrust itself downwards and repeat the dinosaur extinction scenario.

Despite some goofy comments from the director, I'm really excited for this movie and is one my most anticipated movie of 2016....more than BvS!!

"It had this darkness and edge, while still tonally in the zone of what we're trying to do with these movies".

Argh...aye, we get it already!!
Scarilian
Scarilian - 10/29/2015, 8:11 AM
It doesnt particularly matter what he's on about. Truth is its a formula everyone has used, whether Marvel, DC, Transformers or virtually anything else you can think of.

The intention is to imply that Suicide Squad will avoid that formula, however we all know its going to follow other formula's because its just a live-action adaptation of a movie 'Batman: Assault on Arkham'.

Its just awkward that David Ayer is stating he's going to avoid doing one formula when his entire film career is essentially making the same style of movies with the same action beats. He's a good choice for Suicide Squad because every film he's directed has been the same sort of film, the same formula's over and over. Its one of the reasons i'm interested in the film, because he's done the same thing so many times he can do it very well now.

@fettastic

An amalgamation of Metallo/Bizarro/Doomsday is practically confirmed for BvS.

As for the Justice League flicks Braniac has been rumored and is heavily desired by fans. Darkseid is a given due to it being a Justice League.

Lmao @Manti for completely missing the point Ayers was trying to make and making this about the MCU. Talk about a FAIL!!!
