Lawrence Kasdan Says The 'Han Solo' Anthology Film Will Be His Last STAR WARS Movie

Lawrence Kasdan played a big part in making the Star Wars franchise the global phenomenon it is today. Having co-written two of the original trilogy, he's returned to script The Force Awakens & the 'Han Solo' spin-off - but the latter will be his last Star Wars film, it seems...

While George Lucas may be the father of the Star Wars universe, and JJ Abrams seemingly the prodigal son, you'd do well not to forget Lawrence Kasdan's influence on the beloved franchise. The veteran screenwriter co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back & The Return Of The Jedi, and more recently shared scripting duties with Abrams on the next installment in the saga: The Force Awakens.

Four months ago, we found out Kasdan would also work on Phil Lord & Chris Miller's untitled Star Wars Anthology movie focusing on Han Solo. However, in an interview with German paper Bild (roughly translated by the good folks at The Supernaughts), Kasdan stated this will be his last contribution to the saga, claiming that writing four Star Wars movies is "more than enough".

He also added that he wasn't keen on working on the spin-off, but his family loved the idea (he's co-writing the film with his son, Jon), and revealed his desire to return to directing instead. What do you think of his decision? Will you be sad to see Kasdan go, or do you think it's the right time for him to pass his pen to a new generation of storytellers? Sound off below!

Han Solo's untitled Star Wars Anthology film will hit theatres May 25th, 2018.

The only way this movie could work well if it is animated.

So I'm a little confused. Who is writing Episodes IIX and IX? How do you set up questions in Force Awakens that are to be answered/resolved by different writers? Or was the whole story arc for all three written by Abrams and Kasdan, and the screenplay is being written by others for IIX and IX?

@gulducati,

I'm sorry, what's "IIX"?

The Episodes are the ones with Roman numerals. Where are you coming up with IIX?

Rian Johnson is writing Episode VIII, but he's been working alongside JJ to maintain continuity (http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/MintyNewsAndReviews/news/?a=126785)

Johnson is supposedly writing Episode IX too, but Trevorrow will have a say as well. In the end, it'll be Kathleen Kennedy linking this all together. She's the Kevin Feige of Lucasfilm.

@Jollem,

Personally, I think Star Wars is the most overrated franchise in the history of film.
And I have a sneaking suspicion that Episode 7 is a remake of Episode 4.

@Jollem

I'd say it's Empire that elevates the OT above simple popcorn flicks. The way it told such a relatively dark, and mature story. The majesty and the epicness of it all, it was completely unprecedented.

I'm getting in the mood for Episode VII, but I still have zero interest in this movie.

My mom said she was nailed by an old drunken hobo at a Whitesnake concert in 82, so Gusto might be my dad.

She also screwed a wheelchair-bound 12 year old boy suffering from ALS at a Menudo concert, so Mex might be my dad.

My mom was a slut.

Ugh, the hack behind Dreamcatcher and Mumford? This movie is totally going to fail.

(Not really... just the requisite butthurt fanboy comment.)

This is slightly off topic but Boba Fett should be the villain in this film. Maybe that's the fanboy in me talking but still, I think they can do it without ruining the mystique of the character.

I'm sure Temuera Morrison would be willing to reprise his role and I don't think the character would benefit from a film all to himself.
