Warner Bros. Adapting Popular Manga Bleach

Warner Bros. Adapting Popular Manga Bleach

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the manga Bleach is getting the movie treatment!

After the news of live action movies for acclaimed manga Akira and Ghost in the Shell, what's next on the list?

Why it's Bleach!

Yes, the popular alternative rock inspired shounen manga by Tite Kubo is getting a movie! The Hollywood Reporter... reports... that Peter Segal, who directed such popular comedies as 50 First Dates and Get Smart, is in talks to produce the film.

The story of Bleach follows young Ichigo Kurosaki, a badass teenage delinquent who isn't your AV-ER-AGE teenage delinquent! See, Ichigo can see ghosts! In fact most of his family can! But one day, a mysterious monster shows up in front of his house, in battle with a shinigami ("death god" in Japanese). When the shinigami is injured, she must transfer her powers to him, making him into a shinigami!

(Yeah it's basically Japanese Green lantern, just roll with it.)

Now, I know some people might find it weird, nevermind the adapting that'll be done, that the director of Get Smart and 50 First Dates is producing. But let's not forget, Jon Favreu directed Elf before he directed Iron man, and a Westernization could really just make it Dead Like Me meets Green Lantern, anyway! And that could be pretty cool! Oh, and you can BET I'll be making a fancasting!

Good and bad news roll into one. I would love to see who they cast for the roles. This could make a lot of money overseas if they do it right.

Really, Warner Bros?So you're going to adapt manga instead of dipping into the vast comic book library you already own?
StuckInPanels
StuckInPanels - 3/22/2010, 5:11 AM
they better keep the cast Asian and not Americanize it
Spilox
Spilox - 3/22/2010, 5:53 AM
Offcourse they'll Americanize it. They always do. It's probably gonna turn out as DBE.
Keland
Keland - 3/22/2010, 7:50 AM
Grif, that is because Samurai Seven is based off of the old Japanese movie Seven Samurai. I suppose they could could remake it but I'd rather they didn't.

Keland @ I was just about to tell Grif that too..

As for this movie I presonnally like Bleach BUT .... Kenny is right WTF... WB they have a vast amount of comicbooks they own ...

As for an Alternative I would love to see a BERSERK Adaptation..

Shadowelfz
Shadowelfz - 3/22/2010, 9:02 AM
Exactly, spilox. They will indeed Americanize it, giving it to hands that know next to little about the story or characters. The Japanese humor and drama will be lost in translation once again, and well get a weird kiddy film that has no resemblence to the source material because american producers cant seem to understand that most manga is NOT KIDDY in nature. They see a talking teddy bear and thinks 'oh thats like looney toons.' No, its comic relief to break up the tension between intense scenes. There are some goofy moments, but the story and character progression, violence, sexuality ect. are mature. I doubt Bleach will be any different than DBE.

This just made my day! But i'm not too happy that Warner is producing it. It seems like an indy company would produce the best results. If any Warner exec's just happen to see this... I'm going to give you a tip from your target market.

1. STICK TO THE ORIGINAL STORY OF BLEACH AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! DRAGONBALL: EVOLUTION WAS SHITTY BECAUSE THEY TRIED TO AMERICANIZE THE STORY TOO MUCH. ITS SET IN JAPAN, FEATURES SAMURAI-LIKE FIGHTING SEQUENCES, AND IS A MIX OF ALOT OF DIFFERENT RACES(ie. ICHIGO IS WHITE, CHAD IS HISPANIC, TOUSEN IS BLACK)

2. PEOPLE LOVE ANIME FOR THE STUPID LITTLE DETAILS AND CHARACTERISTICS THAT NORMALLY GET OVERLOOKED BY EXEC'S/ WRITERS TRYING TO CASH IN! THE TRUE FANS WILL COME OUT IF ITS AUTHENTIC. IF NOT GET READY TO SEE AN EPIC FAIL ON YOUR END!

3. MAKE SURE IT'S JUST AS EDGY AND STYLISH AS THE ANIME. PERSONALLY I FOLLOW BLEACH BECAUSE OF HOW CURRENT THEY APPEAR TO BE AND NOT TO MENTION AN AMAZING STORY!

BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THIS ONE AND NARUTO HIT THE BIG SCREEN. PLEASE DON'T DISAPPOINT WARNER BROTHERS!

@thegreek

Yea, I definitely think BERSERK could translate well to film, and it fits right in with the hollywood trend lately.....it is VERY DARK. In all honesty, i've never read the manga, i've only seen the anime. It was quite a disappointment when it ended abruptly, but it still goes down as one of my favorites!

Cheers.

@Mike Moody

Are you on crack! There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that Hollywood could get NARUTO right! I don't really care about BLEACH.....never could get into it, so i don't know much about it (only have seen the first few eps). NARUTO is over 400 episodes! I'd be devastated if they f*cked that up...

Beserk was great, but would really be a challenge to bring to the big screen as it is much more graphic than Bleach and other manga/anime out there. I would also love to see Ninja Scroll, which has been rumored to be made into a live action show by Warneer, but that would pose the same challenge as Beserk does. If you can't make them violent and graphic, then don't make them!

Talontd@ Didn't care too much for the ending either, but loved the series.

djkpat - 3/22/2010, 11:05 AM
Nooooo, this is going to be dragon ball all over again. They need to stop ruining classic shonen manga and anime. I just think anime in it's medium is unable to become a hollywood movie. Generally american directors and producers have no idea how to get anime's right, especially with theme's, humor and special effects. I hope this WB endevour flops hard.

thegreek - 3/22/2010, 11:34 AM
Talontd , Ranger @ - I saw the anime first and the ending left at the edge of my seat i was like NOOOOO WTF.... no way can't end like that .... But then i have been reading the manga and it pretty good and there is so much more to the story than what the anime shows obviously ... You guys should def check it out... http://www.thespectrum.net/manga_scans/berserk/

Ninja scroll is pretty bad too... With all the special effects they can pull off these 2
Shaman

My faves have always been Technoman/Tekkaman Blade so i'd love to see it live action!!! But seriously, in regards to the "popular" teen series of anime where it seems to stay the hell away from reality, they're the hardest to translate to film cause they lack explanations which would take too long to add to a 2 hour film so it gets DBE-ed. If they're just gonna fox it up, why make it in the first place? They should tackle Record of Lodoss War!!!

Oh and i can't wait to see my other favorite handeled by James Cameron; Battle Angel Alita!!!

Aslong as Warner Bros keep all their efforts in pumping out DC movies ever summer from 2012 on like they said they would, I'm totally fine with them making this movie.

@djkpat I'm sure if they go through with this it won't nearly be as bad as the dragon ball movie.

Remember, Fox made that film...atleast WB is a little bit more promising.

@Talontd I'm not on crack my friend. Just wishful thinking. Maybe if The Avatar: The Last Airbender turns out well then M. Night Shamalan could pull it off. If Bleach is getting a movie, then it's only a matter of time before some studio picks up Naruto. Btw check out some Bleach fam... narutowire.com

@joob234 I thought a studio picked up Gundam? But that would be [frick]in awesome, (If made by Michael Bay/Spielberg aka Kings of Giant Robot movies)
NiCeLiKeMiKeY63
NiCeLiKeMiKeY63 - 3/22/2010, 1:35 PM
But the animes I want to see in movie form is Yu Yu Hakusho, Full Metal Alchemist or even One Piece
joob234
joob234 - 3/22/2010, 1:55 PM
ok mike moody, you just shot down my MOOD (literaly lol) by connecting michael bay to gundam. michael bay sucks, all he know about in movies is explosions and exploiting women. i want somebody who know how to tell a great fluent story AND good action, more like james cameron (the king of sci-fi), ridley scott, or like you said, spielberg. they did make a live action gundam movie b4 though. it was a canadian straight to dvd piece of crap called g-saviour!
fanboiii
fanboiii - 3/22/2010, 5:15 PM
I'm optimistic about this. WB has done a great job with adaptations recently. Let's see how a real movie studio adapts Anime... *cough* shitty Fox.

I was raised with anime and I'm all for Hollywood adaptations. The fear of Westernization/White-washing is stupid because there's always the original and someone could always do a remake later on. It took how long to get Batman right? And we're still waiting for Superman. Those are American-made so it's going to take some expected stumbling for Hollywood to get Anime right. It's still very possible.

The anime I'm most excited about is Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Mazoku
Mazoku - 3/22/2010, 5:29 PM
this movie is gonna bomb lol.
its the usual shounen jump friendship makes me strong b.s

cowboy bebop and ghost in the shell are the only animes that can possibly b made into a good live action movie that have been talked about so far. FMA could be great if u had a Del Toro or a Peter Jackson creating that world but besides those three i really dont see what else is out there that can make a decent film
NiCeLiKeMiKeY63
NiCeLiKeMiKeY63 - 3/22/2010, 5:54 PM
@joob234 Am I the only person on this site who actually liked Transformers?!?!? Or does everybody just think Michael Bay is a piece of shit??? Look man, all I'm saying is I like explosions, the women and his unique approach when it comes to intense action sequences. Didn't mean to bring you down and not I'm not stroking Bay either lol.
NiCeLiKeMiKeY63
NiCeLiKeMiKeY63 - 3/22/2010, 6:02 PM
Good ladies and gentleman. I'm almost 88% sure now that a live action Naruto movie is coming and let's just pray that WB doesn't butcher one of the two animes I actually follow on the regular and respect

Btw what characters do you guys think they will use for Bleach and how far will they go into the story? Rukia's execution? The Bounts?
joob234
joob234 - 3/22/2010, 7:39 PM
mazoku: read my article on anime-to-film adaptations!!! screw it! im updating it and reposting it lol

o and moody, i wasnt put down by what you said, i just want a director that could tell a great story along with great action. No offense, i mean i like some of michael bay's films, i like the action, i like the explosions, but bay is not the best at telling a gripping, intelligent story like Scott or Cameron or Spielberg
