Director Joe Johnston Gives More Info on Captain America

Speaking briefly about The First Avenger: Captain America, Johnston gives some insight into his directorial "instincts."

The following excerpt is from FilmJournal.com:

"I've got my next job and I'm not going to worry about the success or the failure of the picture," says Joe Johnston. "I can only use my instincts and say, 'I think this is the best version of that scene. This is the best take. This is the best piece of music for this scene.' And I can't start second-guessing myself and thinking, 'What does the audience want to see? What does the studio think is the best solution for this?' You can't start doing that, because after a while it all becomes a blur and you forget what your original instinct was."

That "next job" is the much-anticipated The First Avenger: Captain America, featuring the Marvel Comics superhero created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1940 for Marvel's forerunner, Timely Comics.

"We're in prep," Johnston says. "Rick Heinrichs is production-designing and we're set up down in Manhattan Beach [California]. It's the part of the process that I love the most," he enthuses. "We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures and say, 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could do this?' It's that phase of the production where money doesn't matter: ‘Let's put all the greatest stuff up on the wall and [then later] see what we can afford.'" The film, he says at this early stage, will begin "in 1942, 1943" during World War II. "The stuff in the ’60s and ’70s [comic books] we're sort of avoiding. We're going back to the ’40s, and then forward to what they're doing with Captain America now."

Thanks to FilmJournal for the info.

I've heard some of you say that you are worried that he is directing the Captain America film but I have to say I think he is the right man for the job. I trust him completely and I think his other film, The Wolfman, will be good to. Well hopefully, after The Wolfman is released we will soon have the announcement for who will play the star-spangled Avenger!

I've just finished reading Captain America: Reborn #6 and now I'm really psyched to see Cap on the big screen, lol! :)

"We're going back to the ’40s, and then forward to what they're doing with Captain America now."

Does he mean that the movie will take place in both WWII and the present because I would really hate to see the WWII stuff rushed...!

1942 or 1943 would put it 3 or 4 years into the war. I wonder how long Steve will serve untill he is frozen?

Josh- in an earlier article (by MPP) the movie will be primarily set in the 40's and be book ended by present day.

My guess is it will start with finding him frozen, tell his origin story and then back to the present to lead into Avengers

Bucky better be in this movie!!! especially because Brubaker made him a worthwhile adult oriented character that would fit perfectly with the underlining tones of the marvel studios movies so far.thats one of the main things i felt robbed about in the ultimates. when cap comes back he should be completely alone and struggling with himself so you can kind of relate to him and pity him so that way when he does rise up and decides that he still wants to be cap it feels that much better to watch. instead the ultimates brought him into the future with the two people he really ever cared about still alive and well. also the majority of this movie should take place in the forties. 2011 cant coome fast enough.

crazyish @ I reckon a INVADERS cameo, like seconds would be cool an a must, type of WATCHMEN style!
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 1/30/2010, 10:57 AM
crazyish: Yeah, Brubaker did an amazing job of turning the silly kid sidekick into a bad ass soldier who did what Captain America couldnt - that would translate really well in the movie, and they should definitely "kill" Bucky near the end because I really want to see Winter Soldier in a future Cap movie! :)
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 1/30/2010, 10:58 AM
@Josh-That would be a great way to intro them-we'll have to just wait and see. Glad you liked the Starjammers idea.

I think this guy is already feeling the heat

"And I can't start second-guessing myself and thinking, 'What does the audience want to see? What does the studio think is the best solution for this?' You can't start doing that, because after a while it all becomes a blur and you forget what your original instinct was."

Hope he can handle it. Its only going to get hotter!

This sounds cool, but when he is going to tell us who is Captain America.

It won't be rushed - just think about it. There's too much good storytelling to be had, too many "cool moments" you could play with. He'll want to play with that a good bit first before jumping to the present, but it is interesting that he references the modern day too.

Perhaps we'll see Cap get thawed out mid-movie and see how he copes with the modern age, pre-Avengers...

:rubs chin: I could live with that.

Cool. No reason to worry yet I guess.

Sometimes I get a little nervous when I think about the old boy's track record, but I am hoping for the best. Got my fingers crossed ;)

DOGS: Thanks for the idea man! I'm pretty much out of ideas now for movies (which is why I'm going to start different types of casts after my 50th!) so I appreciate the help! :)

I too hope he can handle this...I'm still not sure if he's the right guy fo the job bust some casting news would be a good indication I think!

Here's hoping for this scene in the movie...

DOGS: Thanks man! :) I think Ant-Man was my 42nd and I'm planning a Batman 3 one and thinking of one or two others but I need a few casts to fill the space up until 50, lol! Like, I said I'll be doing a different sort of cast then (which I'm too paranoid of someone stealing the idea to reveal yet, lol!) but for now Im stuck! :P
