The Captain America Cartoon That Never Was

The Captain America Cartoon That Never Was

Did this 90s era cartoon have the potential to be as successful as the fan favorite X-Men Animated Series?

Marvel fans are sure to remember the X-Men cartoon that ran through most of the 90s. Especially since the entire series was finally released on DVD last year. What many are probably unaware of was the Captain America cartoon series Marvel was gearing to produce along with Saban Entertainment; who also had a hand in both the X-Men and Silver Surfer cartoons of the same era. Though Cap fans would love nothing more than to see the Star Spangled Avenger in as many entertainment mediums as possible, this series may have strayed too far from comfort.

The story was to be set during World War II but would not feature any Nazis as antagonists save for the Red Skull; which is a major oxymoron since the Red Skull WAS a a member of the Nazi Party. The centerstage heroes were to be Captain America, Bucky and a team of commandos outfitted with futuristic technology. It gets stranger, True Believers. Apparently Captain America's secret identity was Tommy Tompkins. Steve Rogers was a cover name assigned to him by the US Army.

Though the storyline might have been a bit unfamiliar, the show itself had several interesting aspects. For one, computer generated scenes and a bit of 3D graphics were to be used; which would have made it the first animated series to employ the technology.

Unfortunately the series never made it past the promo reel stage, due to Marvel's bankruptcy filing and management changes at the time. All was not lost, though. Thanks to the facility of modern information sharing we can at least get a glimpse of the Captain America show that never came to fruition.

Below you'll see a few storyboards courtesy of StoryboardPro. They were created by Will Meugniot; who was the artist for the TMNT and G.I.Joe: The Movie animated films (among many other projects) and also directed Ultimate Avengers 2.

And here, for your viewing pleasure, is the promo reel for the series. Many thanks go out to StoryboardsPro for sharing this information with us. Be sure to follow the included links to their site for a chance to see more storyboards and artwork.

Could have potential... Not as gritty as X-Men which would have been a bummer...

Agreed. Nothing can top the stylistic art-deco take on BTAS. What I would give to be a kid again with my Batman cartoons... And X-Men rocked too.

@Multi: That blows. I feel for you, I'm just about to head out myself to celebrate :)

I believe that the Spidey cartoon employed CGI as he swung through the streets. Would this have preceded the 90's SpideY?

It looks like from hindsight it was good that they didn't go through with it.

This new "centered" layout on CBM sucks, Sgt. Poni!

It's a shame that this show was never made. In the end, all we got was a cameo from Cap and Red skull in one spidey episode.

And that promo in that video above is too reminicent of the opening credits for the G.I. Joe animated series, with the good guys throwing the bad guys to other good guys (As a kid, I always wondered why they didn't just shoot them), and the team raising their fists before the fade out.

Multi-- I like left justified, myself.

Dmon-- Yeah the shield does look too small. lol!

The 3D is hokey and doesn't integrate well with the 2D, but hey it's the early 90s. Just a change in theme song would've worked wonders.

Understood about formatting. I still don't like it. But hey! Its your baby.

What is wrong with these people that they feel that they have to tweak everything. The story for the last 30 years of being in ice works! Its easy. Season 1: WWII Season 2: Silver age stories. Season 3: Modern age stories.

Not difficult.

HOLY HELL!! Loved the Superhero cartoons of the 90s. I was obsessed with Batman, loved that damn show. X-men is defiantly second, idk Spider-Man could tie it. This would have been [frick]ing awesome. It would have fit in perfectly. Yeah, the story is weird but it would have been cool either way. Silver Surfer was cool too maybe not the same caliber but still good. It would be great if they put this together as is, in celebration of the film and release it on DVD.

@Multi

Very true. It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just that those sequences were made famous through G.I. Joe and should stay with that show.

Huh, this would've been pretty cool! :) My favourite cartoon of the 90's (when I was a kid) was the Spider-Man one - it was that cartoon that actually got me interested in Marvel characters and eventually led me to start reading comic books! I was never a big fan of the Batman animated series though...maybe that's why now I only read Marvel, lol!

I don't know about everyone else, but I loved Silver Surfer and the Fantastic Four cartoons. The story lines and characterization were just about 100% true to the comics. And Silver Surfer had that great Jack Kirby style. It has to be one of the great, underappreciated cartoons in history.
