Warner Bros Gearing for Green Lantern Mania

New information from the Time Warner shareholders meeting proves they are banking on Green Lantern to be their latest cross-media cash cow.

Last night, The Hollywood Reporter managed to get their hands on a few slides from the Warner Bros' investor meeting; a meeting which brought us definitive news of the studio's plans for Flash, Wonder Woman and Superman films.

One of the slides focused on their next superhero adaptation, Green Lantern, and the projected cross media campaign that will follow suit:

The Consumer Products and Games bullet points appear to go hand-in-hand with the Green Lantern film, which is scheduled for release June 17th, 2011. The most interesting points seem to be regarding two new animated ventures. During yesterday's meeting, Chairman and CEO of Time Warner's Turner Networks unit, Phil Kent, announced that Green Lantern: The Animated Series has been optioned to Cartoon Network. The slide, however, mentions that the cartoon will be of the Computer Generated variety; which gains more and more popularity with younger audiences.

The second, and most quizzical, reference is the Made-for-Video Green Lantern feature WB is planning to release a month before the live-action film hits theaters. Bruce Timm, the 'godfather' of Warner Bros. animation department, denied that any Green Lantern animated films were on the studio's production slate due to the first's under performance in sales; which contradicted earlier reports that a Green Lantern animated prequel, one that would focus on the creation of the DC universe and the Green Lantern Corps' place in it, was secretly being penned.

One thing is fairly certain, though; Warner Bros is putting a lot of stock into Green Lantern not just becoming one of their tentpole film franchises, but a household brand name along the lines of Batman.

I wonder who DC's next cash cow will be? Wonder woman? Maybe Flash?

Here's to hoping all that drums up plenty of interest! Personally i think the movie could be huge even without all that but it sho cain't hurt

I dunno, I just dont see a character like Green Lantern ever being up there in popularity alongside the likes of Batman, Iron Man and Spider-Man! Still, I guess the same could be said about Thor (which sounds about 100x better from everything I've heard about them both so far though) so I guess we'll have to wait and see! :P

@JoshW-Not many thought that about Iron Man either before that came out as a movie.

@Poni-nice to see your power is back on.

The earlier animated series press release was a little misleading when they said the 2nd year after live action movie release. They must be going by TW's fiscal year calendar.

@ Gunsmith: oh yeah! I'll take one of those too!

Thor is GOING to dominate that year. Teh THORMINATOR, son! But I know GL has a LOT more fans than Thor. Never underestimate the power of the fanboi

Flash could be great if done right. I hope they put somthing in the movie like in Justice League where he taps into the speedforce and beats Lex merged with Brainiac. That was sweet. They have a clip on youtube check it out if you havnt seen it flash speedforce.

****BREAKING NEWS**** One of you editors ought to go make an article about Michale Bay getting the TMNT franchises. I would but it would just get deleted.

@JoshW, I have to co-sign what DogsOfWar just wrote. Before the Iron Man movie came out, he wasn't a big name like he is now. If this GL movie has the same success as the first Iron Man film, that would be great!

They will end up doing both Flash and WW but my opinion is Wonder Woman first. They really haven't had a strong female hero in a while and her story would be great (as long as they go through the whole story). Honestly I am a big Marvel fan BUT GL is the one i will pick over any Marvel hero any day. i still think Bradly Cooper should be GL and they should have saved Ryan for Flash BUT they have plenty of good actors to choose from to be Flash. I like the guy from true blood would be a good Flash. COOPER FOR RAYNER!

Well, Iron Man didn't start off as popular as the Bats. I think Green Lantern was actually more popular before Iron Man took off, and I find Hal a more likable character. Plus, I think people haven't seen fantastic superpowers in a long while.

Flash should be next. That movie could innovate action like the Matrix.

@Josh - I have to agree with Dogs. No one knew shit about I.M. until the movie. I believe Cap, Thor and GL will be media whores from here on.

I do hope we eventually get to see John Stewart having a bigger role in GL (and maybe getting his own movie), which is something I am hoping happens to War Machine as well.

Isn't it about time other ethnic characters get their share of the lime light as well? I know we are talking about characters that were created when ALL superheroes were white, and I am happy that they are FINALLY getting the attention they need. But let's get with the times guys and show some new faces out there also. Come on Marvel! Where is the Luke Cage/Iron Fist movie you keep promising us? When will we hear more news about Black Panther? IJS, nothing but "pale faces" out there. Let's mix this party up a bit ;-)

I wonder what the "expanded publishing" is about. Are they going to reprint original GL stories or market new ones to a wider, possibly younger, audience. Regular novels and junior books would be a good idea, IMHO.

This could be a big break out for GL. Let's all hope so, at least.

@McLovin It's too early to bring in Stewart. I'd like to see Hal go missing at the end of the second film and Stewart takes over and brings back Hal in the third.

@teabag But people love aliens! A team of superpowered aliens could be a nice hook. :D
DTLSinger
DTLSinger - 5/28/2010, 8:48 AM
@McLovin- Not to be Racist but majority of Heroes are white. Iron Fist will be in production but they already have Ray Park playing him. as for Luke Cage and Black Panther, Those Characters don't have the marketing to stand alone. You can't play them up as "Black Heros" because that's gonna piss a lot of Comic fans off. Now having them as supporting roles in movies will be a better idea. and as for John Stewart, Writers are smart they will wait to pull him in. you have technically 2 other Lanterns to go until him so they wont jump the gun cuz that will make them lose fans. Bartledoo!

Green Lantern is already a staple hero with those that truly care about these characters, so it's only natural that once he garner mainstream media attention he get a MASSIVE boost in popularity. Which, I guarantee, will happen, and Warner Bros. knows it. I personally can't wait for next years massive Green Lantern media explosion. :)

The game better be damn good! Cause if it's anything like that Superman Returns game, it's gonna suck granny balls. The free roam flying experience is it's only decent feature for cryin' out loud! Can EA and bring on EIDOS!!!

teabag- Park was not nor will he ever be cast as Danny Rand/Iron Fist. The day that happens is the day Marvel produces a film turd. Imagine Marvel hiring Michael Bay to make a Heroes for Hire film with Ray Park and Tyrese Gibson... i will go throw myself off a bridge now...
DTLSinger
DTLSinger - 5/28/2010, 8:55 AM
@teabag- yeah its in his contract that if they were to make the movie he would get the part. He was a good Toad a good Darth maul and a good Snake Eyes. i think he is perfect for Iron Fist.
StrangerX
StrangerX - 5/28/2010, 8:59 AM
@DTL Seriously when did the news of Ray Park being Iron Fist happen, and wats up with Luke Cage
Shaman
Shaman - 5/28/2010, 9:00 AM
DTLSinger- He also sucked beer sour ass in Heroes and will be the absolute worse part of King Of Fighters. He is the worst actor possible. He is only good at stunts and fights which isn't even half of Danny Rand. If they ever brainfarted a film with him as the lead role, it will be their downfall. If Jason Statham isn't even good enough of an actor to do a convincing Iron Fist, Park is definitely not a better choice. Scott Speedman is the best choice for Danny Rand, that won't cost as much to sign, so far.
Upupandaway
Upupandaway - 5/28/2010, 9:27 AM
@DTL- Black Panther would be a great movie, especially if they go the Thor/Avatar route by placing him in his home town. Wakanda brings a new atmosphere to CBM's that hasn't been explored before. It'd be nice to get out of cityscapes for a while. The reason Avatar was so big was that it introduced people to a very imaginative world with it's own ecosystem and culture (It definitely wasn't the story.). Black Panther can do that same bit of escapism.

@BmanHall- What about this?

@Upupandaway It would be cool to c a Black Panther movie. If Marvel focused on him after the events of the Avengers movie that would be a really good look.
McLovin
McLovin - 5/28/2010, 9:44 AM
@DTL - your not being racist, if all you're stating is "only the facts Ma'am", but the reason we only saw heroes that were non-white after the civil rights movement, is because people were racist (or at least, more obvious about it).

But I totally disagree with you that a contemporary Luke Cage and Black Panther would not work in their solo movies. As a matter of fact, I think they absolutely would work and in addition, you can have them in movies like Avengers in the future as well.

Btw, can we confirm this Ray Park thing about the Fist? In his contract? WTF does that mean? I don't think he is "perfect" for the part and to say he was perfect for Snake Eyes was a joke right? Any experienced stunt man could have played that character!

Shaman - 5/28/2010, 9:53 AM
Upupandaway has a great point about wakanda vs pandora! It's also an aspect of what made "Lost" a very popular show. Mr. Echo in Lost was also very much adored and that indicates that with that actor and concept, Black Panther could be a box office favorite in terms of CBMs. Let's get it DONE!!!

BmanHall- I also agree with you that the gaping manchest would not be too convincing. I know it's to show off the tatoo and all but that's lame.
Upupandaway
Upupandaway - 5/28/2010, 9:56 AM
@StrangemannX09 & McLovin- Spot on! I think it would be interesting with a BP movie if they focused more on Wakanda than BP. All CBMs thus far have been character pieces. BP would be a great opportunity to go a slightly different route by looking at the Black Panther as a title and its connection to Wakanda.

@Shaman - I also liked Upupandaway's Pandora idea (that would be awesome dude), but I say HELL NO to Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (try saying that fast 3 times, I dare ya) playing T'Challa. I would much rather see Chiwetel Ejiofor take a crack at playing the Wakandian King.

GL has always been my fav character for DC. but the fact that it has 4 lanterns from sector 2814 n they limit their movies to a trilogy, it wud be a hard chance to catch all of them in action.
