In the two years The Hobbit has been in development, director Guillermo del Toro has been unwavering in his dedication to the project. The director even moved his wife and children to New Zealand for the shoot, while the first movie was aiming for a December 2012 release. Eager fans who have been awaiting a film adaptation of the popular J.R.R. Tolkien book were stunned today to learn that del Toro has relinquished the helm of the production. In a statement to Lord of the Rings fansite TheOneRing.net, del Toro says,

“In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming “The Hobbit,” I am faced with the hardest decision of my life. After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures.

"The blessings have been plenty, but the mounting pressures of conflicting schedules have overwhelmed the time slot originally allocated for the project. Both as a co-writer and as a director, I wish the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new director."

It is being speculated that del Toro may have begun rethinking his involvement with The Hobbit when MGM put the two-picture project in a 'limbo' state several weeks ago. Producers for the film had been gearing for an official start date sometime this summer, but to no avail.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy director Peter Jackson offered a response to del Toro's statement as well: "We understand how the protracted development time on these two films, due to reasons beyond anyone’s control – has compromised his commitment to other long term projects. The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn’t feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years. New Line and Warner Bros. will sit down with us this week, to ensure a smooth and uneventful transition, as we secure a new director for the Hobbit. We do not anticipate any delay or disruption to ongoing pre-production work,"

Though he's officially off of this film, del Toro won't have much time to himself. The director has a laundry list of projects already in development that will outline his next 10 years; including Neil Gaiman's Death: The High Cost of Living comic book adaptation and a Frankenstein remake.

This is a HUGE hit to this film. Lets hope the end product is still just as good. Also, as for his "upcoming projects" you can't forget about DEADMAN! :D

That sucks I guess. He seemed like a natural pick to direct this over Jackson.

But hey, maybe now he can get to work on Hellboy 3 and maybe even.....Mass Effect.......in my dreams ;P

I'm equal parts sad and happy to hear this news.
Sad because, man, I was really looking forward to seeing Del Toro's making of the movie feature on the Hobbit DVD. Seriously, half the respect I have for him as an artist just comes from the insainly detailed and awesome making of documentaries he does. I was looking forward to seeing him give a tour of the sets and just being so passionate about every little detail, most of which don't even make it into the film.
If you don't get what I'm talking about watch the doc on hellboy II, his tour of the troll market is beautiful.

And happy because now the Master is free to create more awesome movies, maybe even a hellboy 3.

MGM is in such a festering hot mess of red tape now. Hopefully things can get sorted out in some fashion so we can see Hobbit and Bond films get under way.

GDT has so much else on his plate but here's hoping for Hellboy 3 in the near future.

This is what MGM officials get for acting like twits financially. MGM can F#$@ themselves for losing a great director like this, making GDT work years for nothing pisses me off!

I can't wait for the Frankenstein remake with Doug Jones, Hellboy 3, and hopefully he comes on board for Halo. Just imagne how awsome he would make the covenant and Halo universe look!

That was a very eloquent resignation letter. Del Toro is one of the great directors of our day. Can't wait to see "High Cost of Living" though. He'd be the perfect guy to interpret that world. Peter Jackson did a great job with the original LOR trilogy. I'm sure he'll help find a good person to helm the Hobbit.

So long as he starts making films, as many and as quickly as possible (without losing quality, of course) I will be happy. SUCH a good director.

Can I say "YAY!"?

DelToro is a unique filmmaker, and I think the best genre filmmaker in the business today. But he's done next to nothing since Hellboy II (or should I say, the [frick]ing awesome Hellboy II?), which was 2 years ago. Why? Hobbits.

And with MGM dragging things down, it could be 5 years before the Hobbit saga is completed, and that's if they started shooting this year. I don't want DelToro taken out of circulation that long. I want him free to persue his other dream projects, whether original ideas or adaptations. And yes, I'd kill to have his meaty hands all over Doctor Strange.

Odds are we'll get at least 3 DelToro films by the time Hobbit 2: The Hobbiting is released, and probably 2 or 3 more that he produced. I want those movies. I want him making a variety of things, not chaining himself to another filmmaker's dream project, even if Peter Jackson is that filmmaker.

Honestly, this is one of the more disturbing trends I'm seeing - George Lucas Syndrome. George was once a young, promising director with lots of ideas. Then Star Wars came along, and his career, essentially ended. Everything he did seemed aimed at Star Wars (and to a lesser extent, Indy, but even the Young Indy series was in part a field test for the digital sets used in the prequels). I mean, I heard about Red Tails when I was in college, and that was before Clinton was president! He's just NOW getting around to making it? Really?

And here's Peter Jackson, shackling himself to another 5 years Tolkien excusion. And over there is Cameron, a man who released 6 films in 13 years (1981-1994), and only 2 in the following 16. And what is he doing as an encore? Two more [frick]ing Avatar films!

I think the smartest thing Speilberg ever did was avoid getting tied down to one franchise. Sure, you could make an argument for Indy, but that was something he split responsibility for, and therefore left him time to persue other projects (for better or worse). Who knows what would have happened had he been talked into E.Two.

As much as i'm pissed off with the fact that the prequel to my favourite trilogy's getting screwed over (heck it made so much money... how the hell can something like this go wrong? :P) I'd rather not see a hobbit movie for another 5 years BUT see it done right, than see it in 2 years and commit suicide :P
