If this image below, which was released last night at Variety.com, looks familiar to you, you're very right. It appears to be a variant of a comic book cover created by Simone Bianchi for Geoff Johns' Revenge of the Green Lanterns mini-series.

Upon closer inspection, the differences are fairly obvious: Angle of the mask, transparency over the eyes, the ring design, glove texture and the CGI-esque green "flames."

[Green Lantern movie logo from the film's set]

After browsing over every Green Lantern comic book cover from 1998 to present, including variant covers included in trade paperback collections, I have yet to see this image duplicated or in larger format. Why would be this be a hint at the movie costume or ring? The context of the Variety piece was to promote Green Lantern movie merchandise, which will premiere at next week's Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas, NV.

Since we've had more false positives on possible Green Lantern concept art than Britney Spears has had on pregnancy tests, the call is being put out to all our resident CBM sleuths to hunt down any previous trace of this artwork.

Confirmation should be made sometime next week with the unveiling of all the Green Lantern movie goodies at the Expo; but us fanboys and girls aren't well known for our patience.

Many thanks to CBM member InterestingJohn for bringing this to our attention this morning!

CONFIRMED! Variety Senior Editor Marc Graser was kind enough to respond to my information request about this image, considering his article was where it first appeared:

This is artwork that Warner Bros. Consumer Products had exclusively reproduced by DC Comics, and was given to him directly from Warner Bros. It’s inspired by Green Lantern #10, Volume 4. Warner Bros. Consumer Products is working in conjunction with Mattel to create Green Lantern movie-based merchandise; some of which will be displayed at next week's Licensing International Expo.

And there you have it. This image is our first look at part of Hal Jordan's attire for Green Lantern, as well as the ring design for both the film and merchandise. Though it doesn't reveal too much, it does confirm that he will be wearing his trademark domino mask and gloves; not to mention the updated look of his ring.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has also released these images to License! Magazine, one of the companies leading next week's Expo. It appears we now have our first look of the official Green Lantern movie logo and title as well:

If it is something official, it could be for that expo for merchandise. It looks like a teaser image. Just a hint of what green lantern is.

How disappointing. It's just the ring. I want to see the costume. I know it's all supposed to be CGI (God help us), but it would be nice to get our greasy hands on a concept art.

I'd say it's a strong possibility. The ring is pretty much an exact match (dead RINGer?). I also seem to recall reading somewhere on this site that they more than likely were not going with the white gloves. That coupled with the added seams in the picture makes me think this is what we're going to see on Ryan Reynolds.

I can get down with this concept art, though that ring is NOT Hal Jordan's ring. It's Kyle Rayner's ring,at least it was at first, now it's the ring given to Green Lantern Honor Guard). So, the ring is NOT accurate to the character which makes me sad. :/

InterestingJohn- I think that's Hal's pilot jacket collar we're getting a glimpse of while the ring is changing him into Green Lantern.

PRETTY SLICK FIND THERE PONI........WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE,A SHAMELESS RIPOFF BY SOMEONE WHO CANT DRAW BUT CAN WIELD A MEAN PHOTO SHOP?.....I DONT BUY IT!

@JLanphear - you're 100% correct. Btw, what the hell is the difference between being an "honor guard" or a regular Lantern? I know the Alpha Lanterns are supposed to be the enforcers (or something like that), but what's an honor guard supposed to be?
Stumblin

Looks pretty crappy to me. I call fan made, why would the studio use a current image let alone a comic style image as conceptual art? They don't do that sort of thing. And the smokey green overlay looks like shit. Somebody can't draw so they copied and altered an existing picture they liked. Basically what ProfOJ said.

@IJonh - thanks dude. So who else is an honor guard? And how does one get the job?

at the same, there was a lot of work that was put into it. Even the masks are fairly different, unless a fan had tons of time on his hands. Also, it came from variety.com

It's possible that it was created just for the expo itself. Usually for merch expos, there's ton of art work that's not meant for the 'real' public.

Fake! It's obviously a photoshopped copy of the Carlos Pacheco classic. This is in no way real.

Multi- Armor? Where???

Oh and they didn't "photoshop" the privious similar art. The hair and ear are different. This was remade entirely using the classic art as a guideline.
McLovin
McLovin - 6/4/2010, 10:56 AM
@Shaman - It could be the jacket. The chest does resemble an armored plate though. If it is an armor, it would perhaps explain what that is next to his head.
spectre1983
spectre1983 - 6/4/2010, 11:05 AM
Sorry Shaman I beg to differ, check out the hair "swirl"... exactly the same. I say they tweaked it for the ears and other differences. Photoshopped! Fake!
Shaman
Shaman - 6/4/2010, 11:06 AM
Multi- I see... "something". It couls only be "leather" seams or something else. There isn't enough texture to the details to be sure. I still say he's in mid-transformation and that's the pilot jacket collar we're seeing. It could also be what we're seeing on the sides of his chest ensignia.

Spectre1983- Actually no it's not. At first glance it seems to be, but look at both carefully and you'll see slight differences. For starters, the single hair thread in the middle of the forehead doesn't even have the same curve. And the other thicker swirl also has very slight difference in spacing between hair threads. The ear isn't exactly at the same height on the head when compared to the domino mask. It is different but very well done!

Also this "supposed" concept art is nothing like the other concept art we've already seen. i.e. Guardian, Kilowag, etc. The style and format are more like a comic book image than the CGI we've already been exposed to. Fake.
Shaman
Shaman - 6/4/2010, 11:13 AM
Spectre1983- It could be concept art for the comic book adaptation of the film as well. DC tends to like publishing those.
spectre1983
spectre1983 - 6/4/2010, 11:19 AM
@Shaman- I'm telling you those slight differences can easily be done in photoshop. I'm sticking with my theory. If I'm wrong then I'll accept my defeat humbly when we receive official confirmation. Until then I shout out at the top of my lungs: Fake!

So saith the Spectre.
