Over the past several months, rumors have come and gone regarding the development of another Green Lantern animated film. At first it was said the tentative storyline would follow the birth of the Green Lantern Corp under the watchful eyes of the Guardians of the Universe. That information seemed to have been disproved by DC Animation executive Bruce Timm. According to Timm, the low sales numbers of Green Lantern: First Flight had caused DC to second guess revisiting the galactic hero for another animated feature. Shortly after that news hit the net, DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns, stated that a second direct-to-video Green Lantern project was in the works; and it's released may coincide with the theatrical debut of Martin Campbell's Green Lantern live action film.

Just a few weeks ago, we learned that DC's animation department was moving forward with their next two films: Superman/Batman: Apocalypse and Batman: Year One. To the dismay of many Green Lantern fans, it appeared that The Dark Knight had taken over their hero's film slot. That worry seems to be unfounded, however, with recent news from Warner Home Video highlighting Green Lantern's return to the animated venue with Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.

The title Emerald Knights should be familiar to Green Lantern fans. It was a six-issue comic series written by Ron Marz and Chuck Dixon, and later collected in trade paperback format. The story is this:

"When a young Hal Jordan is thrust forward in time, Kyle Rayner, the current Green Lantern, finds himself face to face with his legendary predecessor. Working together for the first and only time, the two Green Lanterns must find a way to defeat Sinestro and the villain that Hal is destined to one day become, Parallax. Joined by the JLA and Green Arrow in this adventure, Kyle must not only find away to defeat his enemies but also decide if his actions in the present will prevent Hal from going insane and killing many of the Green Lantern Corps in the past, or only make things worse."

Whether the animated film will follow the series' storyline exactly is uncertain at this point. Hopefully, with the 2010 Comic Con International just a few short weeks away, Lantern fans will received a few more tidbits of what to expect in this much anticipated film.

It would make sense if it was a sequel to First Flight but I remember DC talking about how that's not gonna happen

Gonna be confusing but sounds good

Blackest Night or Sinestro Corps War would be so awesome! But this is a good move by Warner Bros. to introduce the character more. Plus Emerald Knights is pretty freakin awesome!

The plot sounds like it should be a good animated film.

@ SuperNovaCorp- I agree. They can make more GL animated films with stories that would otherwise be overlooked for a live action film and build a DC Animated library of essential stories that could showcase a richer history to the GL. That would be sweet ;o)

Nice find Poni. Also did you get my e-mail for the Comic-Con pass availability that I sent you for your earlier article?

EK is easily one of my favorite GL arcs. I can't wait for this :)

I like the sound of this. Sounds like a great story, and we get to see a little more Rayner (my second favorite lantern). I'm down with that. I'm kinda hoping though that if there are more GL movies coming out we see more villains than just Sinestro. GL has some pretty decent baddies, I say use 'em.

As much as I'd love to see it I don't think Blackest Night will hit DVDs anytime soon, Sinestro Corps MAYBE, but Blackest Night is nowhere near. Blackest is the culmination of the entire War of Light Arc and there no way to fit that into one movie. It'd work great as a limited 50-episode animated series, but I think it'd wouldn't work as a movie. Maybe in a series of GL movies? :\ Follow-up this movie with an Emerald Twilight/Rebirth mash-up (Sorta like the Superman Doomsday movie, except make it good), then Sinestro Corps War, follow that with a meld of Rage of the Red Lanterns/Agent Orange, and top it off with Blackest Night. Problem is that DC isn't exactly in the habit of sequeling their animated feature and even if it would, one of the biggest points in Blackest Night is that it involved the entire DCU even though it was predominantly Green Lantern Storyline. Point being it would be odd following up a bunch of GL movies with a Justice League/DCU movie -shrugs- Just a reminder, this just fanboy speculation here anyways. I really don't like acting like a fanboy, you get too easily disappointed when sh*t doesn't your way :\

In any case looking forward to this movie , good looks MPP ^_^

Yawn, DC is just cashing in on the feature film!

We've had a GL animated already, we need, CRISIS, JSA, KINGDOM COME or KNIGHTFALL or something amazing!

I dont think its a good idea to do the whole Emerald Twilight thing and with the story line with Hal vs Parallax vs Kyle. I never liked that what they did to Hal Jordan in the 90s. He was totally out of character and this is perhaps DCs top fault decisions of any dc character. Make a Green Lantern series that leaps over the black hole they made when they made Hal go mad.

Beware my power!

@ LEEE I agree They should do Crisis or Kingdom Come. That would be SWEEEET!!!

But this sounds pretty badass too. I'm a sucker, I'll buy any animated film DC puts out. I own everything to date. (including the older ones, lol)

LEEE777 - I think Knightfall would be a great animated movie. In fact with all the Batman animated movies they have been putting out I am quite surprised they have not already done that one.

Lexkal @ Josh @ Hellz Yeh!!! ; P

Angelus @ I'm kinda surprised WB ain't thinking about doing a weekly animated GREEN LANTERN show, could get much more of the GL story arcs in that than rushing 'em in a DVD movie!
marvel72
marvel72 - 6/29/2010, 4:20 AM
@ leee777 they should do a green lantern animated tv show,so we can see more of the modern stories the likes of the sinestro corps war, rage of the red lanterns, agent orange & maybe the blackest night.
Angelus
Angelus - 6/29/2010, 4:41 AM
@ LEEE777 - I totally agree. They could really show us the Green Lantern mythos with an animated series instead of rushing it all in a dvd movie.

Beware my power!

@deadpool72 If they do a Green Lantern animated TV show, I don't think we'll see it till after the live action movie comes out. Once they've got the general public more interested in the franchise.

Green Lantern: First Flight is BY FAR my very favorite animated CB film! Marvel AND DC included!!! Why? Cause i never followed the comics so i had no clue as to what was "supposed" to be. But First Flight is an excellent film in itself with great voice acting and spectacular animation the likes of which WB has never given us before! Christ even the theme song gives me an erection! So i'm all up for any new animated GL product DC puts out! Just as long as it's just as good if not better than First Flight, quality animation film making wise. I hope that they stick to the source so we all can get a kick out of it this time around but i sure as hell don't want them to go back to their old animation ways. Lets move onward and upward, to infinity and BEYOND!!! :P

i wish they would start with Sinestro Corps War and work their way up to Blackest Night and Brightest Day. That would be fantastic.

no complaints with this one. Personally, I would've loved to see blackest night, but the storyline is so in depth, I can understand why they wouldn't touch that one. I like the fact that people who aren't really in tune with the green lantern mythos can learn about kyle rayner, and parallax, and also see that it isn't all about fighting sinestro

@CDB Agree 100% That would be awesome.

I haven't read Emerald Knights, is it a good storyline? Either way I have become a huge Green Lantern fangirl lately (I'm buying any TPBs I can get my hand on) and am very excited about this! Hopefully it will be better than First Flight.

McLovin
McLovin - 6/29/2010, 8:20 AM
What? No John Stewart? No Guy Gardner? Just more of the same Hal Jordan and Kyle Lame Rayner? I can understand they are promoting the new GL movie and for that reason they have to use Hal, but Rayner?

On another topic, I now DESPISE THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE!!!!! If there was ever a chance I would watch that movie, it is completely GONE NOW!!! I don't get it. Do the advertisers really think that the best way to get us to watch a movie is to play the promo over and over and over and over again? This is the same thing that happened with the Wolfman. Come on Galactus, what gives? Can't we opt for playing the trailer instead of being forced to deal with it on almost every page of this site?

Goin' off of what i have seen of the GLs, my favorite is John Stewart and i'd love for him to get his own feature eventually. But i don;t mind waiting a bit since he was at least in the JL series :)

Kyle hasn't ever been featured before in animation so i think this is a good feature to try. And i freakin' hate Guy Gardner.

Kyle is my favorite GL, so it will be cool to have him featured in this movie along with Hal!

Sweet music to my ears right now. Knights was a very good arc, so this go around should be much better than first flight.

If they keep wanting to put Batman and Superman in these movies, they should do Sinestro Corps war.
