Superfriends Season One Coming to DVD

On January the 5th 2010, Warner Home Video will release "The Superfriends (1973-74): Season One, Volume One" on DVD. The Super team show before all shows is here for you to own forever. Read more here...

From the creative team of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, this 2-Disc 8-Episode DVD Collection features the first animated adventures of the DC Super Friends legacy.

This show started it all, which brings Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman & Robin, and Aquaman for the first time stopping alien beings, misguided scientists, and any bad guy around, while also helping out their three junior Super Friends Wendy, Marvin, and Wonder Dog.

Showcasing all your DC Comics favorites, each exciting episode showcased Earth's cosmic legends saving humanity from the threat of destruction at the hands of evil alien invaders, misguided geniuses and overzealous scientists. With prophetic threats such as global warming, over-mining and government misappropriation, yes this was a generation's unwitting glimpse into the future. No super hero collection will be complete without this classic hit on your selves.

The 2-disc collection DVD will contain the very first 8 episodes from the 16-episode season debut, no word yet on bonus features.

"Their mission: To fight Injustice. To right that which is wrong. And to serve all mankind!"

Super Friends was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, and aired on ABC in 1973. The show features the voices of Danny Dark as Superman/Clark Kent, Sharon Farnon as Wonder Woman, Olan Soule as Batman, Casey Kasem (Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, and host of the long-running radio show American Top 40) as Robin, Norm Alden as Aquaman and Plastic Man, Sheri Alberoni (The Mickey Mouse Club, and Alexandria from Josie & the Pussycats) as Wendy, Frank Welker as Marvin and Wonder Dog, John Stephenson (Mr. Slate from The Flintstones, and Mr. Peevley from Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch) as Colonel Wilcox, and Ted Knight (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Too Close for Comfort, and Aquaman) as the narrator and The Flash.

Again, Super Friends: Season 1, Volume 1 will hit stores January 5th, 2010.

I have never seen these shows- never aired in my lifetime in Ireland (I think). Looking forward to it.
So I believe there were follow up shows called 'Challenge of the Superfriends' and 'Galactic Guardians'. They've already been released, ahead of the original show?
I really don't understand it, would appreciate someone shedding the light on it!

BMAN @ ; D

I like BUD ICE myself!!! Heh heh.

Invalensname @ As far as i know, them DVDS you said are just eps from seasons, this is actually gonna be all the seasons and episodes on DVD eventually anyway. But yeah your right them Galactic Guardians and stuff were follow ups, to tie into the SUPER POWERS kenner action figures too that were sold i believe the same time.

Anyway, should be sweet and very retro!

Only 8 episodes?
InSpace - 10/7/2009, 4:39 PM
Thanx @ TEA! ; )

Invalensname @ They are from the Superfriends seasons just later ones, an not full seasons i dont think.

InSpace @ Yeah its a 2-disc box set, second part right after! which will make the full season of season one, with 16-eps.

I think its just a way WB is using to sell them, if their cheaper in 2-parts they'll probably sell more than if they put them altogether. Tough really they should market the complete box.

I hate buying things in separate volunes. Might take a while, but they could release them all together. They just did that with Justice League and JL Unlimited.
But since I've never seen this, I dont think I can wait...
invalensname - 10/7/2009, 4:58 PM
@ invalensname: Just fair warning, big guy. Super Friends isn't as action pacted as JL and JLU. It's like comparing Scooby Doo to Johny Quest.
BmanHall - 10/7/2009, 5:06 PM
@ BmanHall- Lol, yeah, I figured that! I've seen the Scooby Doo meets Batman specials, so I'll presume it's along those lines though with less Scooby Snacks :)
invalensname - 10/7/2009, 5:10 PM
Anybody see the most recent Family Guy episode?? Classic.. Brian and Stewie as Batman and Robin loll

i know some of the younger generation will think this is to corny(b/c it is) but this toon was the bomb when i was a kid, and i couldn't wait for sat mornings too watch it(you know, back then when cartoons were only on saturdays, unless you had cable.) fond memories. ;)
bw - 10/8/2009, 1:58 AM
This show is the first superhero thing I remember seeing when I was a kid, and I loved it from the first episode. I'm really happy to hear that this classic is finally coming out on DVD, and look forward to seeing what kind of cool extras they put with it. Yes, it seems a little campy now, but it fit the times it was released in, and it brings back some great childhood memories. The villains weren't classic DC villains, but they all had good motivation for their actions, and isn't that the main thing we need from a villain?
comicb00kguy - 10/8/2009, 7:34 AM
And please! Let's not get comparing this show to JL or JLU. These shows were written in completely different eras, with completely different standards and practices to deal with, and completely different attitudes towards cartoons. Cartoon writers in the 70s and 80s were held back by all kinds of ridiculous restrictions that have largely disappeared now, or changed with the times. You also have writers now that don't have the attitude of "writing down" to kids, which was prevalent until probably around the time of Batman TAS.
comicb00kguy - 10/8/2009, 7:39 AM
Okay guys, do NOT get too excited here.

I was one of the original watchers of this terrible Saturday morning cartoon, and even at my young age I was appalled at the unnecessary bone thrown to kids in the form of Wendy (puke!), Marvin (projectile puke), and "Wonder" [sic] Dog.

Most of the series dealt with the semi-Justice-League saving the worthless bacon of the throwaways week after worthless week, a steadily increasing borefest that just ended up with me going out to play instead of waiting breathlessly to see the show.

I had the better cartoons when I was even younger, including the old Superman and Batman cartoons (you can see these from time to time if you get the TV channel "Boomerang"), and of course, my favorite, the old Fantastic Four. THOSE had me taking the bike across town to the 7-11 to steal-read all the comics on the rack until the store clerk would throw me out.

No, this is not something I will purchase, and if you want a better way to spend your money, buy the new Mystery Science Theater 3000 box sets. Now THAT'S entertainment!

'Nuff Said!

LEEE777 - 10/8/2009, 8:32 AM
@SirExcalibur: Yep. I remember another kid in my second grade class being all excited about it and calling me on a Friday to ask if I was going to watch it the next morning. That was a big deal back then. It was crappy animation, but we didn't have much to compare it to except the Warner Bros Bugs Bunny stuff.

A big huge bowl of cereal and Saturday morning cartoons! Those were the days...
Velox - 10/8/2009, 10:07 AM
I loved this show when it came out. It was the most awesome thing. It was the best. But then "The Challenge of the Superfriends" came out where they faced the Legion of Doom and I was like man Marvin And Wendy sucked. It continued from one half show to the next week and concluded on that show. Not too much action. But, If you love Superfriends. Get it in your collection. This is a once in a lifetime oppurtunity. It might dissapear forever. Older people like me will agree with me on this.
Scorpioxfactor - 10/8/2009, 12:34 PM
Imran - I saw that! Funny this article should pop up just as Family Guy did a spoof of the SuperFriends intro!

This show used to piss me off! LOL! I f*cking HATED Wendy, Marvin and Wonderdog!! Where were these kids parents at and why weren't they in school?

The '77 - '79 seasons are the volumes to look for! SuperFriends('77), Challenge Of The SuperFriends('78) and World's Greatest SuperFriends('79) - those are the ones to get on DVD/BluRay!! The All-New SuperFriends Hour from '80 - '83 interspliced new shorts with re-runs, but was good as well!

Super Powers ran for two seasons from '84 - '86 and aggravated me due to the inclusion of Cyborg and the overuse of Darkseid and Firestorm! This made most of the heavy hitters into the supporting cast of their own show! Grrr...The second season of Super Powers was called Galactic Guardians.

bropus - we agree on that one! BIG props to Hannah Barbera for the '67 FF cartoon! That was the best one ever!
