Fox Will Be Developing a U.S. Version of Torchwood (The Dr Who Spin-off Show)

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting: Original series creator Russell Davies of "Torchwood" from BBC Worldwide Productions is writing the script of a new "Torchwood." Fox will be developing the U.S. version of the U.K. hit TV show...

"Torchwood" is the spin-off from the 2005 new run of "Doctor Who," also been a comic book and its about a special covert group that investigates and fights supernatural and alien activity. Its had two seasons thats aired on BBC America and also a stand-alone miniseries, called "Children of Earth."

John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness, may star if Fox orders "Torchwood" to pilot.

The trade says the American version will contain a global story line instead of more local treats as in the BBC series thats based in Cardiff Wales.

LEEE777 - Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Good thing maybe as it's not a complete reboot or remake by the sounds of it. What do you guys think?

That's kinda funny.I've mostly heard that people disliked the first two series, yet thought the third one was a vast improvement.I personally liked all series.I don't think it would be a good idea for him to star in the new one, though.Isn't there going to be a new series of the British version?

Kenny @ Maybe he'd be making a cool cameo, for it to tie with the Brit one??

Uhhhh.... not really excited about this one, guys. Granted, I am a HUGE 'Doctor Who / Torchwood / The Sarah Jane Adventures' fan, but I still remember the last time Fox tried to adapt something 'British' for an American audience (anyone remember 1996 'Doctor Who' movie?). Granted, there were elements that were truly 'Doctor Who'-ish and Paul McGann's performance was BRILLIANT, but... the flavor was all wrong as they tried to make it 'better, faster, stronger, harder, etc.' to appeal to Americans (and totally detroying the film in the process). I'm afraid they'll do the same to 'Torchwood'.

loganoneil - 1/19/2010, 11:44 AM
Tea - LMAO! Wrong... but funny. I'm just worried they'll go for all action and dump the suspense and fantastic plots that make Torchwood what it really is! Plus - is mianstream America really ready to see an omin-sexual leading man? Think about it folks, Americans CLAIM to be progressive, but let's face it - the country was founded by PURITANS ('nuff said!)!

LEE: What dome thing!? You mean that tall silver thing they use as an entrance? That's real! In fact, I dont think that theres any fake CGI buidings or anything in it! A lot of the scenes are filmed in what's known as Cardiff Bay and the rest is mainly filmed around the same general area!

Dog - I thought we made peace (or at least I hope we can). I apologized for my comments made on the other thread. You were right - politics do not belong on this site. I let my personal feelings about politics/the environment get in the way of comic books, and for that I truly apologize. My concern regarding this is not to 'bash' American culture (hell, I LIVE in the Midwest!), but one of genuine concern about the series and how would translate to a completely different audience.

Yes 'The Office' (both the US and UK versions) are hysterical, but if you've seen both, you'll agree that a side-by-side comparison is almost impossible - it'd be like comparing apples to oranges. The US version has evolved into something completely different than the original.

Necrosage - BBC America wanted it (it IS a British show after all). The BBC apparently didn't renew the license with SciFi and kept it for their American division. They DO carry both 'Doctor Who' and 'Torchwood'. If you don't have it, try YouTube. All of the shows are on there (if you don't mind watching them in 10 minute segments). You'll also be able to see any new ones (usually 24 hrs after they've been broadcast in the UK) as they come out - looooong before BBC America transmits them here in the States!

Enjoy!

loganoneil - 1/19/2010, 12:27 PM
...barring that, you might try PBS - I know a lot of PBS stations have renewed interest in the series now that it's back. You'll have to deal with older seasons, but it's still 'Doctor Who'!

logan@ peace brother.:) i havent been back to that thread since my last post cause i didnt want to fight anymore. funny thing, my wife is related to al gore and he actually called the house the day of the wedding....trust me i speak less about that issue at home than i do here :)

i agree the 2 offices are apples and oranges. and i dont think most americans will watch torchwood the way it is, otherwise they would just put it on. they will definately have to americanize it to some extent. but i think most of us, especially those of us who love comics and sc-fi would be ok with the lead character, as long as the rest of the show is good. but it would be different for sure, but different doesnt mean bad. as i said, the offices are different and they both fcking crack me up. although i will admit i am biased towards the american one. and i lived in kansas for several years so i know what you mean about the midwest :)

hmmm, a global Torchwood would be good, but I wouldn't want a Torchwood just set in America.

Also, just a tidbit, contrary to popular belief it wasn't Fox who messed with Doctor Who, but the British producer/writers Philip Segal and Mattew Jacobs. They wanted a distinctly new Doctor...so they ignored much of the series history. Fox had nothing to do with the production of the movie, it was done as a colaboration between the BBC and Universal Studious, yet they never get the blame. Fox's only hand in the failure of the movie was that in many parts of the US it was preempted by sports.

LEEE - There have been 4 mentioned in the TV series so far:

Torchwood 1 - London
Torchwood 2 - Glasgow (both 1 & 2 are destroyed)
Torchwood 3 - Cardiff ('The Hub' - currently blown up / members temporarily disbanded... until the next series ;))
Torchwood 4 - Unknown. The location of 4 was never mentioned (I don't think... Guardian - a little help with this one, please.) and has apparently been 'missing' for some time now.

LEE, yeah they were active in more than london, but most have been killed off, though in the scenes with Mickey and Martha from the last special it does seem that have regrouped. I'd love to see more of Mickey, so I hope that's where this version goes.

And I don't know about superior Logan, I just devour anything Who related. I just love the show. As for Torchwood 4, it's only known that it was lost. But judging by the locations of the other three it has been speculated to have existed in Ireland as the other branches are located in the other parts of the UK.

The character Yvonne Hartman said in the Doctor Who episode 'Army of Ghosts', "The Torchwood Institute has a motto. ‘If it’s alien, it’s ours’. Anything that comes from the sky, we strip it down and we use it, for the good of the British Empire." Supposedly there is/was a Hub in India(? - if you listen to the audio books), which would make sense considering Torchwood was originally created by Queen Victoria to protect England against alien threat. India WAS a British colony (and so was the good ole' US of A for that matter). Torchwood US could work under that premise (PROVIDED that the writers respect what's cannon!).

Dog - My condolences to you and your your wife about your 'relations' thing (LOL!).

Guardian - Did you get my e-mail? Can you confirm any of it?

logan@ thanks man. and good catch on the possibility of one being in the u.s. makes perfect sense. if they do it it should be a "spinoff" style the way you suggest, have the u.s. division, as opposed to trying to remake it as the u.s. one is the main one and it was created to protect the president from aliens. but thats probably what they'll do.

I didn't get your email logan, prolly because I haven't updated my cbm profile with my new email address! I'll do it now, but for future reference it's william.r.sinclair@gmail.

But your theory about the colonial branches seems good. I, and others, have only speculated that 4 was in ireland because the other three branches represent England, Wales and Scotland, which leaves only Northern Ireland. But, you're right, as Torchwood was founded at the height of the British Empire it could be almost anywhere.

I think I'd rather a Global Torchwood rather than an American branch though, just because I'd like to see more of mickey, martha and jack, and it doesn't make much sense for them to be in the American branch.

Any one know what RTD's involvement with this venture would be? More than anything Torchwood was his baby that he got BBC to agree to air with the coin he'd earned with Doctor Who. He's said that it was based on an idea he pitched in the late 90's to BBC about creating a British version of the X-files and Buffy, which I think is an accurate description. He may have left Who, but I don't think he's mentioned the future of Torchwood.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 1/19/2010, 7:34 PM
Guardian - Well, who's to say that #4 isn't in Ireland and that Torchwood US could be #6 (if you count India). Remember, there was a time when the phrase "The sun never sets on the British Empire" was true! For all we know, there could be splinter Hubs in China, Australia, South Africa, etc., and if so, Torchwood would truly be a 'global' power.

True about Mickey, Martha and Jack, though I thought the two 'love-birds' were somewhere in the UK in 'The End of Time'. The problem with M & M is that they're freelancing now, with no affiliation to either UNIT OR Torchwood (though I'm sure Martha still has 'connections'). I'd LOVE to see those two as new additions to Torchwood Cardiff (they ARE short a doctor and a IT person now that Owen and Tosh are gone). Maybe Rhys could be the new 'Ianto' to round out the team. He DOES have a vested interest in Torchwood, considering his wife/mother of his child IS the second-in-command there (thought I can't picture Gwen ever sharing with Jack...)

Torchwood is RTD's baby, that's why I heard he left DW to completely run the Torchwood show from now on. I imagine Davies being an exec producer in the US version (for continuity's sake - one can only hope).

In any case, the e-mail (which you didn't get) concerns the upcomming 'Doctor Who' series 5. I've heard numerous rumors about the internet that it will start sometime in March, with the possibility of the season being split in two - one half shown in the spring and one half in the fall. Unfortunately, the BBC is being its usual tight-lipped self and non saying mum about anything (as far as I can tell). Have you heard anything?

Also, I stumbled on this at the Sylvester McCoy website. SUPPOSEDLY it's a 'SPOILERS' page for the upcoming series. Don't know if I put too much faith in it (but it IS Sylvester McCoy's site). The trailer is way cool and it DOES makes for very INTERESTING reading - especailly the part about 'M01 Doctor Who MOVIE' ('TIME WAR'...?! ....McGann?!! ...Eccleston?!!! ...Tennant?!!!! ...on the big screen???!!!! ...TOGETHER????!!!!! Oh, be still my beating hearts!). Have you heard anything? PLEASE tell me you heard SOMETHING!

Yeah, I've read some fan speculation about a march start. It's based on the fact that march is when the first 11th doctor novels are coming out, which would suggest that the series would be out around the same time.

As for another Doctor Who movie that's the first I've heard...and I agree it would be amazing!! However other than the McCoy site you listed I can't find another source, neither the tardis wiki nor imdb can confirm it. Which is strange as they're all about rumors.

@#$!!! I HATE NOT KNOWING!!!!! There was talk of a DW movie awhile back. Supposedly it was going to be a one-off (separate from the series), similar to the 60's movies with Peter Cushing. There was even speculation that Catherine Zeta-Jones was going to play an assistant (me-ouch!). I hadn't heard anything more on movie plans since then, until today on the McCoy site.

those peter cushing movies were pretty weird. They weren't bad once you accepted that it wasn't really Doctor Who though.

And I agree, not knowing when season 5 will begin is annoying. Even a vague idea of a march start is a bit rough, I mean the last few seasons started back up shortly after the holiday break.

I KNOW - The Doctor is HUMAN?! The TARDIS isn't dimensionally transendental?!! WTF?!!!! The plastic Dalek sets were pretty cool though...

With most of the primary filming 'in the can' for series 5, you'd think the BBC would give us fans a SMALL break and at least let us know when to program the DVR's! I've been checking the official website every day for SOME news, but I think my bosses are catching on (surfing the web is frowned on where I work).

Yeah, all the BBC site says is coming soon. I've never understood why they're so tight lipped about air dates, you'd think they'd want people to know so that they'd get a larger audience, not that the weeks notice hurt the rating for the specials but I think that if there was more notice the anticipation would have been even greater.
