AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. - Clairvoyant Speculation

So who is the clairvoyant in Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D? There have been many theories, but I think I've come up with a pretty good case for mine. Please do not read if you'd rather be surprised as this may spoil it for you if I am correct...

Hey Guys,

Thanks for checking out my editorial.

***WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILERS IF I AM RIGHT****

Now please understand that I have no sources or factorial evidence. This is purely speculation based of bits of information and observations that I have made from within the show it self.

Now so far we do not know a lot or so we thought about the clairvoyant, at this point we have had tid bits of information but let's look at what we do know:

*firstly according to Edison Po and Raina the Clairvoyant is a man - now this may be a lie or a red herring but this is based on a conversation they shared...(insert conversation):

Raina - "Will you tell me what he's like?"
Edison -"Never. The last person who tried to learn such things got a knife for it.
I don't want to have to do that again, Raina. You have such pretty eyes."
Raina - "I understand. You can't even whisper to me about him."
Edison -"No, I can't."

*secondly based on discussions about the clairvoyant I do not believe that HE is actually psychic...this is based on the fact that the majority of psychics in Marvel comics with ACTUAL psychic abilities are mutants...well the MCU does not have access to these so that rules out a lot of potentials...also Coulson has made it a point that there are no documented cases of psychic abilities in the MCU to date or on the index...this leads me to my next point...

*thirdly if the clairvoyant is not actually psychic well how does he do what he does...well lots of other fiction points to mathematicians being able to predict the future or a chain of events using complex mathematical equations...(insert conversation):

Raina - "The Clairvoyant gives guidance, formulas."
Coulson -"For what?"
Raina - "The changing world, the world your organization brought upon us.
We're new to the business of what you've been doing for decades."

Formulas hey? Makes for an interesting point...this would also explain why the clairvoyant could not see or determine how Coulson was brought back to life and needed to take him hostage to probe his mind for the answers...

*fourthly we know the clairvoyant has ties to centipede, using them to try and create super soldiers that he can command, so he wants to create super strong humans? Also we know he has access to high levels of technology, tech that not even shield has seen (i.e cybernetic kill switches in the form of eye balls which he uses to control useful individuals) so tech used to control people or lead may be another word we can use...interesting? We have also learnt that he has ties to Ian Quinn who again is a tech monger with numerous technological resources at his hands...

Ok so far that is what we have that has been revealed within the show...not much to go on well but it does eliminate potentials and maybe narrows it down I think...have you reached the same conclusion as myself yet? Ok I won't prattle on any longer here is who I believe the clairvoyant could possibly be:

Interesting no? The Leader certainly fits the bill. Here's a few reason why:

*Well firstly it wouldn't be a hard push as we all know from The Incredible Hulk The Leader already exists in the MCU...

*Based on the events in The Avengers Prelude: Nick Fury's Big Week we know that old Samuel Sterns was discovered by Black Widow while he was mutating, shot in the leg by Natasha and detained into Shield custody...so he definitely has a grudge against S.H.I.E.L.D...and due to this startling revelation now knows about S.H.I.E.L.D's operations and likely their History...

To further my case here is a description of The Leaders abilities -

The Leader has superhuman mental acumen, as a result of his exposure to Bruce Banners irradiated blood. He possesses enhanced intuition, pattern solving, information storage and retrieval logical and philosophical structuring. His ability to predict probable outcomes of tactical and strategic scenarios is so advanced that it borders on clairvoyance. The Leader has a perfect memory with the ability to recall every moment since the accident that gave him his powers. In addition to his superhuman intelligence, the Leader has limited but potent telekinetic and telepathic powers. He is able to mentally control non-gamma-mutated individuals upon touching them, and has toppled a very weakened Hulk with his telekinetic blasts.
The Leader possesses knowledge of genetics, physics, and robotics, and has designed a large number of sophisticated weapons, vehicles, computers, androids, and synthetic humanoids. He is particularly adept at genetic engineering and manipulating radiation for various nefarious purposes.

So able to predict probable outcomes so advanced it border lines on *pause for effect* CLAIRVOYANCE!

I'll wait a moment while you take that in...so there we have it, uncanny abilities that give The Leader the appearance of clairvoyance, knowledge of genetics, physics, robotics...designed numerous sophisticated weapons, androids and synthetic humanoids (i.e cybernetics!)

I believe it would make for an extremely amazing reveal that may even open up some of season 2 to maybe have a particular gamma irradiated green skinned person involved (or that could just be wishful thinking)...We know that AGENTS OF SHIELD has no issues with getting hold of actors from the films (Samuel Jackson, Colbie Smulders, Jamie Alexander, Stan Lee lol) so all is fair game...why not Mark Ruffalo, who's to say we'd need to see The Hulk what would be wrong with Bruce Banner without hulking out (no fun I know) would save production cost and they were going to do a Hulk TV series so they may already have the tech to bring Hulk to the TV...(again massive wishful thinking)

Now I could be completely off...but I believe this makes for a compelling case no?

So thanks for reading my article and my (what may be very imaginative) speculations...thoughts below...

[frick]ing AWESOME read!!!!!!! I love this theory. I advise putting a thumbnail on your article so that more people would've attracted to it. People NEED to read this. I hope your right. Not even a fan of the Leader, but this makes me want him in the MCU so much more. Hopefully leads to a Hulk movie.

Nice write-up. The only issue is that Stern didn't seem like the type to run a secret organization.
My personal guess is that the Clairvoyant has been around and in the shadows longer than Stern. They could even introduce him in Agent Carter, to make a connection to AoS. Or maybe the Clairvoyant is an inhuman. Or maybe it's an early version of Ultron, since he might already exist at least in software, created long ago by a young Pym.
In any case, rather than connections to previous characters, I would guess that they'll look to new ones.

Very good write up. This theory is pretty darn good and well thought out. I hope your right cause The Leader would be a great choice for this show. Good Stuff!

I have had the same theory for sometime now, and hope this to be true, we should all tweet joss on the matter, maybe even saying the same thing, like "@josswhedon Would you maybe describe the "clairvoyant" as a..."LEADER"?" I think that would maybe get us some type of cryptic answer on the matter....yea, lets do that!

I'm alright with this theory, Samuel Stern is already established in the MCU and could work, has anyone checked to see what the actor has lined up for the next little while? I still really really want it to be M.O.D.O.K. seeing as very few people have seen him, and he hates being seen... but I guess The Leader is also somewhat malformed...

MODOK would just be cool and a great way to open up so much more in the MCU, seeing as we already have Zola, and our first glimpse of Leader in TIH... I just really want AIM to pop up in this... then we can also get scientist supreme, which could lead to a tie in to Ant Man...

I have been speculating this for a while as well. It fits, and I think it is far more likely that AoS will bring up something from the past, rather than encroaching on any future film franchises.

I think the Leader is a strong candidate.... The only thing that gives me pause is whether Marvel would want to use the Hulk's nemesis on a show where they'll likely never have the budget to have the Hulk guest star. Not a deal breaker though.

At first I thought it would end up being Baron Mordo but this makes way more sense.

It's a decent theory. I did detect one problem. You said one of his abilities is telekinesis. But, it has been stated in the show that just like there are no known psychics, there are also no known cases of telekinesis. Now, they could always alter him from the comics so that he doesn't have that power, or, even though it has been said that those abilities aren't KNOWN to exist, the could have him be the first. They could also just have it be some guy who is actually psychic too if they go the route of saying he is the first.

I've thought Leader now for a little while, myself. I think because we have such strong tie ins to to the greater MCU with Thor, Cap, and Iron Man, we need a stronger, more involved tie-in with Banner. This provides a nice way to use existing ties and characters instead of introducing new ones, and tie us all in to the Avengers and possibly Avengers2 with these characters.

Could be Enchantress...?

It's so damn stupid that they had Coulson say that there were no known psychics...

SHIELD had a whole TEAM of psychics back in the day. They were anecdotally known as the SHIELD ESPers.

But that doesn't matter because whether or not it's contractually allowed for them to mention the X-Men, someone like Coulson would be aware that some mutants have psychic powers.

In a comment section on AoS article, I just mentioned Banner would be nice as an elongated cameo on AoS, like 3-5 episode arc...but also said, may not get Hulk because of sfx expense...I'd love to see the Abomination show up again in the MCU (AoS?) if they do have the budget for it... Or at least Blonsky make an appearance as a prisoner of SHIELD...of course, all tieing in to the Leader...and possible Red Hulk...

A very plausible observation. The Wizard had popped into my mind, but he is likely in the FF universe under Fox. Then there is Egghead. Maybe Roger Wardell knows.

My theory - and I will admit this is a bit out there - is that the clairvoyant does not possess his knowledge because of of any extra-sensory perception, but because he is from the future. In a word: Kang.

Seriously, it's Jake Fury...duh. As the leader of Zodiac, he is using astrology to predict Shield's moves.

I really hope The Leader and Abomination return, perhaps in age of Ultron in the masters of evil or something. Anyway top three possibilities are MODOK, The Leader, or Purple Man.
